Now."

Claire carried the case.

Rebecca finally moved.

We climbed.

The first floor was hazy.

Fire burned somewhere above us.

Emergency lights flashed red.

As we reached the lobby, part of the ceiling crashed behind us.

Rebecca stumbled.

Claire instinctively turned.

That tiny movement told me everything complicated between them.

Hatred did not erase attachment.

Betrayal did not erase childhood.

Claire reached for her mother.

Rebecca grabbed her wrist.

For half a second I thought she needed help.

Then I saw her other hand.

A small blade.

"Claire!"

Rebecca pulled her daughter close and put the blade against her side.

Officers raised weapons.

"Back!"

Rebecca's composure was gone.

Smoke swirled around her.

Claire stood rigid.

"Mom."

The word sounded younger than she was.

Rebecca's face twisted.

"I cannot let them open that case."

"You already lost."

"No."

"You confessed."

"That recording isn't enough."

"Then why burn the building?"

Rebecca tightened her grip.

"Give me the case."

Claire looked at her.

Then down at the black leather case in her hand.

"Was I ever anything but leverage to you?"

Rebecca's face changed.

"Don't."

"Leonard used me against you."

"Claire."

"Grandfather used me."

"Stop."

"Then you used me to excuse everything afterward."

"I protected you."

"You hid me."

"Because Robert would've destroyed us."

"He was dead before I finished high school."

Rebecca said nothing.

Claire's voice cracked.

"You kept hiding me after he was dead."

"I had a career."

There it was.

Not Claire.

Not protection.

Career.

Reputation.

Power.

Rebecca seemed to realize too late what she had admitted.

Claire nodded slowly.

"Thank you."

"For what?"

"For finally saying it."

She let the document case drop.

Rebecca's eyes followed it.

That was the opening.

Claire drove her elbow backward.

Rebecca lost her grip.

Marquez lunged.

Reynolds seized Rebecca's knife arm.

The blade clattered across tile.

Within seconds Rebecca was on the floor in handcuffs.

Claire stood against the wall, breathing hard.

She had chosen to drop the evidence to free herself.

The case lay between us.

Untouched.

That choice mattered more than whether the case survived.

Firefighters rushed in.

We were pushed outside.

Cold evening air struck my face.

Michael sat beside James near an ambulance.

Leonard was already being treated under guard.

Curtis was at another hospital.

Gregory another.

Pike in custody.

Rebecca emerged in handcuffs beneath flashing lights.

Cameras had not arrived yet.

They would.

A sitting judge being arrested outside her own charity while the building burned would not remain quiet.

Claire stood beside me.

"Did she start it?"

"Probably arranged it."

"She always has backups."

"So do you."

Claire looked at the case now in Marquez's possession.

"I learned from her."

"That doesn't mean you have to become her."

She glanced at me.

"You sound like Evelyn."

The comparison hurt.

"You knew my mother?"

"A little."

"When?"

"I was seventeen."

Mom had been alive then.

"She came to see you?"

"Yes."

"What did she say?"

Claire looked toward Rebecca.

"She told me my mother's fear was not my inheritance."

I closed my eyes briefly.

That sounded exactly like Mom.

"Did you believe her?"

"Eventually."

The firefighters contained the blaze before it destroyed the ground floor.

Much of the second floor burned.

But the basement records survived.

Rebecca's attempt to erase the archive failed.

Or perhaps, like everything else, she had not fully committed.

Maybe she wanted the threat of destruction more than destruction itself.

We would never know without evidence.

The black document case was transported to a secure state facility.

I went too.

Not because I had legal authority over it.

Because Marquez understood that after twenty-one years, making me wait unnecessarily would be another form of cruelty.

The latches were rusted.

One had been forced previously.

Inside were folders wrapped in plastic.

Original invoices.

Ledgers.

Photographs.

A cassette.

Signed statements.

And an envelope.

MARGARET.

My name.

Dad's handwriting.

I stopped breathing for a second.

Michael stood beside me.

"Open it."

I looked at him.

"Did you know?"

"No."

For once, I believed him without hesitation.

I opened the envelope.

Dad's letter was dated the morning before the fire.

He wrote that if I was reading it, his attempt to fix what he had done had probably failed.

He did not ask me to defend him.

He wrote:

I participated because I told myself everyone in business bent rules. By the time I understood what Leonard and Robert were willing to do, I had already given them enough of myself to use against me.

I looked at Michael.

He stared at the table.

Dad continued.

He had tried to keep both of us away from the business.

Michael refused because he sensed something was wrong.

I stayed away because I had built my own life.

Dad was grateful for that.

Then:

If Michael believes I chose you over him, tell him I was trying to keep both of you alive and failed differently with each.

Michael turned away.

I kept reading.

Dad knew Mom had been threatened with photographs of me.

He blamed himself.

He planned to take the evidence to James and accept whatever charges followed.

He expected prison.

He wrote that losing the company was irrelevant.

Losing his children was not.

At the bottom:

Do not spend your life cleaning up what I was too cowardly to stop sooner.

My eyes filled.

That was exactly what I had been doing without knowing.

Cleaning.

Paying lawyers.

Covering Tyler's debts.

Keeping peace.

Absorbing damage.

Making every ugly thing look manageable.

Dad's final instruction was simple.

Tell the truth even when it costs the family its good name.

I folded the letter carefully.

Michael was crying silently.

I let him.

Then Marquez opened another folder.

"There's something here about the river body."

We gathered around.

Frank's handwritten notes described the staged identification.

Samuel was originally intended to become Michael's official corpse.

But Samuel's body had been too badly damaged after Frank killed him.

Leonard feared questions.

So they used Frank's own body after Leonard shot him.

That explained the grave.

But the river body remained.

A separate page listed:

RIVER SUBSTITUTE — G.L.
