22 – Someone Beat Andrew to Northstar and Stole Peter’s Archive, but the Blood in the Boathouse Belonged to a Person We Thought Was Safe

The first blood sample came back faster than expected because investigators found a second source for comparison almost immediately.

A bloody handprint marked the inside of the boathouse door.

Clear enough for rapid database comparison.

The prints belonged to Claire.

I stared at Detective Marquez.

"That's impossible."

Claire had been with Michael.

At the hospital.

Then at the nonprofit.

"Current prints?" I asked.

"Could be older."

"Blood doesn't stay fresh for years."

"No."

Marquez called the team guarding Michael.

No answer.

She called again.

Still nothing.

My stomach dropped.

Then Reynolds reached another officer inside the hospital.

Claire was gone.

"What about Michael?"

"In his room."

"James?"

"Secure."

"When did she leave?"

Nobody knew exactly.

She had told an officer she needed air.

That was twenty-three minutes earlier.

"Twenty-three minutes is not enough to reach Lake Erie."

"Correct."

"So the blood isn't from tonight."

Marquez nodded.

"Likely earlier."

"How much earlier?"

"Forensics says not more than a few days."

The timeline tightened.

Claire had visited Northstar recently.

Without telling Michael.

Without telling James.

Possibly before hiding the flash drive in my house.

"What was she doing there?"

Marquez didn't guess.

Good.

We had enough guessing.

At the perimeter, tactical officers cleared the cabin and boathouse.

Andrew was not found.

Neither was whoever wrote the warning.

But the property told a story.

Someone had searched systematically.

Floorboards lifted.

Walls opened.

Mattress cut.

Old dock planks removed.

The archive was no longer there.

"What did they take?"

"We don't know what Peter left."

"Then how do we know anything was taken?"

Because of the cabinet.

Its shelves showed clean rectangular spaces surrounded by decades of dust.

Boxes had sat there until recently.

Several.

Maybe eight or ten.

Now gone.

Then an officer found a hidden camera.

Old-fashioned housing.

Modern electronics.

Recently installed.

"By Claire?"

"Maybe."

The memory card remained.

Footage began seventy-two hours earlier.

Claire entered the boathouse alone.

Dark hair.

No disguise.

She opened the steel cabinet with a key.

Inside were document boxes.

She removed one file.

Then another.

Photographed pages.

Returned everything.

"She knew where it was."

Marquez nodded.

"Michael said she knew Peter's records existed."

"But not where."

"Apparently she did."

The footage continued.

Claire suddenly looked toward the door.

Someone arrived.

She hid behind shelving.

A man entered.

Gray hair.

Black onyx ring.

Andrew.

My skin prickled.

So he had been at Northstar three days ago too.

Long before tonight's toll-camera trip.

"What happened?"

Andrew walked directly to the cabinet.

He had his own key.

But before opening it, he stopped.

He seemed to sense someone else.

He turned.

Claire stepped out.

No audio.

They argued.

Claire held up a piece of paper.

Andrew reached.

She pulled away.

He grabbed her.

Claire struck him.

Andrew shoved her against the door.

Her hand hit metal.

Blood.

The handprint.

Then she produced something from her coat.

Not a gun.

A photograph.

Andrew froze.

Claire spoke.

Whatever she said changed him.

He released her.

They continued arguing for several minutes.

Then Andrew left.

Claire locked the cabinet.

Took three document boxes.

Carried them out.

"She removed the archive."

"Part of it."

"Where did she take it?"

No camera outside captured her vehicle clearly.

But Claire had saved Peter's material before tonight.

That explained the empty cabinet.

Maybe Andrew had returned tonight because he realized she had taken it.

"Why write NOT YOURS, ANDREW?"

Marquez replayed.

The writing was not present after Claire left.

So someone later entered.

Maybe Peter's archive had another guardian.

Maybe Claire returned.

Maybe Andrew wrote it himself as misdirection.

Then we watched footage from the next day.

Gregory Lane entered.

Alone.

He looked through the cabinet.

Found boxes missing.

Left.

The day after that, Curtis arrived.

He never opened the cabinet.

He placed something beneath a loose floorboard.

Then left.

"Everyone knew about Northstar except us," I whispered.

Marquez almost smiled.

"Apparently."

The floorboard was checked.

Inside was a small recorder.

Curtis's.

A message had been stored.

"If this is found, Andrew Varden is alive."

His voice continued.

"Rebecca knows. Leonard knows. James doesn't."

Marquez looked at me.

Curtis had tried to preserve another truth.

The recording explained Andrew's role.

After Robert supposedly died, Andrew briefly resumed impersonating him for business cleanup.

Then Rebecca pushed him out.

Why?

Because Andrew wanted control of the old network.

Rebecca wanted legitimacy.

She believed the network could become something quieter.

Law firms.

Judicial influence.

Development approvals.

No bodies.

No warehouse fires.

Andrew believed fear worked better.

Their split happened seventeen years ago.

Around Robert's death.

Curtis said he did not know whether Robert's death was real.

But Andrew believed Rebecca had killed someone.

"Who?" I whispered.

The recording answered.

"Andrew always says, 'She buried the wrong brother.'"

That sentence chilled me.

Maybe the body in Robert's grave was not Robert.

Maybe Rebecca had tried to eliminate Andrew and accidentally—or deliberately—buried someone else.

Marquez stopped the playback.

"We need the exhumation."

Already requested.

Then the recorder continued with an unexpected detail.

"If Claire reaches Northstar first, let her take it."

Curtis knew Claire planned to come.

"Why?"

"Because Peter intended the archive for Rebecca's child."

Claire.

Peter had no children.

He trusted his niece.

Perhaps he created Northstar partly for the next generation.

Michael's memory had been one route.

Claire herself was another.

"What photograph did Claire show Andrew?" I asked.

No clue.

But maybe Michael knew.

I called him.

He answered on the first ring.

"Where are you?"

"In the hospital, like a prisoner."

"Good."

"Maggie—"

"Claire went to Northstar three days ago."

Silence.

"You knew."

"No."

"Don't lie."

"I'm not."

"She knew where Peter's archive was."

"How?"

"That's what I'm asking you."

Michael went quiet.

Then:

"Her mother."

"Rebecca told her?"

"Maybe years ago."

"Explain."

When Claire turned sixteen, Rebecca secretly gave her several objects belonging to Peter.

A watch.

A photograph.

A brass compass.

Michael had seen the compass.

North star engraved on the lid.

"Did Claire still have it?"

"Last I knew."

A literal compass.

A clue hidden in plain sight.

"What photograph?"

Michael hesitated.

"Peter and Andrew."

My pulse jumped.

"Where?"

"At the lake."

That must have been what Claire showed Andrew.

Proof of something.

"What was in the photo?"

"Peter standing near the dock. Andrew behind him."

"Anything else?"

"Someone in the window."

"Who?"

"I never saw clearly."

"Claire did."

Probably.

I asked where Claire might take Peter's archive.

Michael didn't know.

Then he said:

"Wait."

"What?"

"Claire once asked me if Evelyn's attic still had the cedar chest."

I froze.

"Mom's cedar chest?"

"Yes."

The chest had been moved after Mom died.

Not to my house.

To a storage locker I inherited.

I had forgotten it existed.

"Where is it?"

"Storage facility on the west side."

Marquez heard.

Within minutes officers were sent.

I called Richard.

"Do you remember Mom's cedar chest?"

"Yes."

"Did we ever empty it?"

"Mostly."

"Mostly?"

"There was a false bottom."

I stared at the phone.

"You knew?"

"I found it after Evelyn died."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"There was nothing inside."

Of course.

Another secret compartment.

But Claire might know about it.

The storage facility confirmed a woman matching Claire's description had entered earlier that day.

Before the nonprofit fire.

She stayed sixteen minutes.

Left carrying two old document boxes.

"She moved Peter's archive there?" I asked.

Maybe.

Or moved something from there to another place.

Claire was creating her own distributed evidence trail.

Like Dad.

Like Mom.

Like Peter.

The same instinct repeated across generations.

Hide enough copies that no single person can erase the truth.

Then Michael called me back.

His voice was urgent.

"I remembered the photograph."

"What about it?"

"The person in the cabin window."

"Who?"

"It was Mom."

I stopped.

"Evelyn?"

"Yes."

My mother had been at Northstar with Peter and Andrew.

"When?"

"Before the fire."

"What was she doing there?"

"I don't know."

James might.

We connected him.

He looked shaken when he saw the photograph.

"Evelyn went there once."

"Why?"

"Peter asked her."

"For what?"

"To witness something."

"What?"

James stared at the image.

"Robert's confession."

Everything stopped.

"Robert confessed?"

"Partly."

Peter had secretly recorded his father at Northstar.

Robert admitted using Leonard and Frank.

Admitted bribery.

Admitted threatening Daniel.

But according to James, he refused to admit ordering violence.

Peter wanted a witness present who wasn't a Varden.

He trusted Evelyn.

My mother heard the recording.

Perhaps that was why Robert's people threatened me immediately afterward.

"Where is the confession?"

"Peter kept it."

"In Northstar."

"Yes."

The missing boxes mattered even more.

"Did Claire know?"

"I told her years ago."

There it was.

James had given Claire the route.

Not directly.

But enough.

"Why?"

"Because I was old and afraid I would die before someone finished this."

I almost laughed.

Another person passing responsibility to a younger relative under the name of protection.

At least Claire had chosen to carry it knowingly.

Marquez received another call.

One of the state teams had located Claire's car.

Parked outside a motel forty miles east of the lake.

Empty.

Inside the trunk were three document boxes.

Northstar labels.

Peter's handwriting.

Claire had removed part of the archive.

But not all.

"Anything else?"

A bloodstained towel.

The brass compass.

And a photograph.

Marquez opened the transmitted image.

Peter and Andrew at the lake.

Mom visible in the cabin window.

On the back, Peter had written:

IF ANDREW RETURNS, HE WILL COME FOR THE ORIGINAL.

Underneath:

THE ORIGINAL IS NOT HERE.

I stared.

Northstar itself had been a decoy.

Peter's archive was real.

Important.

But the one original Andrew wanted had never been stored there.

"What original?"
