30 – Thomas Came Back to My House for Something Dad Had Hidden Before the Fire, and I Finally Remembered Seeing My Uncle After His “Death”

I did remember the train station.

Not all at once.

Memory returned as separate physical details before the scene itself.

Yellow plastic seats.

The smell of burned coffee.

My mother's red scarf.

Dad gripping my elbow too tightly.

I had been sixteen.

We were changing trains in Cincinnati after visiting relatives.

I saw a man at the far end of the platform who looked exactly like Thomas.

My dead uncle.

I pointed.

Dad didn't even look.

He pulled me away.

“That's not Thomas.”

“But—”

“No.”

His voice had frightened me.

On the train, Mom gave me aspirin and told me grief could make people see familiar faces.

I believed them.

For thirty-four years.

Now Thomas claimed I had actually seen him.

“What else do you remember?” Marquez asked.

I closed my eyes.

The man carried a brown case.

Not Dad's black document case.

Different.

He wore a baseball cap.

Then something else.

A silver ring.

Black stone.

My eyes opened.

“Onyx.”

The same ring associated with the old company.

Thomas had worn one too.

“How many rings existed?” Marquez asked.

I had assumed four.

Dad, Michael, Leonard, Frank.

Maybe I was wrong.

Richard remembered seeing five in an old company photograph.

Michael too.

One belonged to Thomas.

The rings weren't merely gifts.

They marked the founding group.

Dad.

Thomas.

Leonard.

Frank.

And perhaps Robert.

We found the photograph.

Five men.

My father.

Thomas.

Leonard.

Frank.

Robert Varden.

All wearing identical black onyx rings.

Michael had received Dad's spare later, not an original founder ring.

The entire criminal network had begun closer to my family than I understood.

My father had not accidentally wandered into Leonard's scheme.

He and Thomas were present at the beginning.

Dad's confession acknowledged participating later.

But the photograph suggested involvement from the company's earliest expansion.

“Did Dad lie in his federal statement?” I asked Peter.

Peter looked uncomfortable.

“Maybe by omission.”

That hurt.

Dad had told truth selectively.

Even when trying to confess.

Still cleaning his own image.

Still deciding which truth others could handle.

I folded my arms.

“No more heroes.”

Richard looked at me.

“What?”

“No more turning Dad into the good brother because Thomas is worse.”

Michael nodded slowly.

Dad had participated.

Then tried to stop.

Both mattered.

Thomas had participated and continued.

That mattered too.

We did not need simple categories.

We needed accurate ones.

Thomas's vehicle approached Columbus.

State police could intercept.

Marquez hesitated.

“If he's coming for the house, we can learn what he wants.”

“You want to let him come.”

“Under controlled surveillance.”

My instinct said no.

Then another instinct said I wanted to watch him fail.

I distrusted that one more.

“What risk?”

“The house would be empty.”

“Tyler?”

“Moved.”

“Richard?”

“Moved.”

“Me?”

“Absolutely moved.”

I agreed.

Not because I feared the house.

Because walls weren't worth becoming bait unnecessarily.

We relocated two streets away inside an unmarked command vehicle.

The house sat dark.

Interior cameras covered every room.

Thomas arrived at 2:11 a.m.

Alone.

He did not break a window.

He used a key.

My key.

Or a perfect copy.

Watching him enter my foyer created a strange violation deeper than seeing Tyler's financial thefts.

This man had helped create the culture that taught everyone my boundaries were negotiable.

He paused beneath the family photographs.

Looked at one of Mom.

Touched the frame.

I hated him for that.

Then he climbed the stairs.

Not my bedroom.

Guest room.

He went directly to the shelf where Claire's hollow book had been.

Empty now.

Thomas smiled.

Then downstairs.

Living room.

Fireplace.

He checked behind the panel where Dad's black box had been.

Again empty.

He expected that.

“Testing what's already been found,” Marquez said.

Then he entered the basement.

Passed Mom's old Christmas storage.

Stopped beneath the electrical panel.

I frowned.

“What?”

Thomas removed a screwdriver from his coat.

Took off the panel.

Behind it was a second metal cover I had never noticed.

He unscrewed that.

Inside:

A narrow cavity.

And an envelope.

I stared.

“How many hiding places did Dad create?”

Thomas opened it.

Empty.

His face changed.

Not surprise.

Rage.

Someone had beaten him there.

Again.

He searched the cavity.

Then found handwriting on the inside wall.

He leaned close.

The camera zoomed.

THOMAS — YOU WERE ALWAYS TOO LATE.

D.C.

Dad.

Even dead, my father had left his brother a message.

Thomas punched the wall.

Once.

Hard.

Then laughed.

The sound through the hidden microphone unsettled me.

“Daniel,” he whispered.

He began searching the basement more aggressively.

Shelves.

Tool cabinet.

Old furnace room.

Then stopped at the concrete floor near the water heater.

My stomach tightened.

A patch looked slightly different.

I had never noticed.

Thomas did.

He found a hammer.

Started breaking concrete.

“Do we move?” Reynolds asked.

Marquez watched.

“Not yet.”

Under the thin patch was a metal tube.

Thomas pulled it out.

Opened one end.

Inside was a roll of film.

Microfilm.

Old.

He smiled.

So Dad's first message had been a decoy.

Or challenge.

The real object lay beneath.

“What is it?” I asked.

Peter leaned toward the feed.

“Records.”

“How do you know?”

“Daniel used microfilm for company backups.”

Thomas held it to the basement light.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Michael.

I looked across the vehicle.

He was sitting three feet away.

His phone hadn't moved.

Another spoof.

The message contained:

HE'LL BURN IT IF HE CAN'T READ IT.

Peter reacted.

“He needs a reader.”

Thomas apparently knew where to find one.

He replaced the concrete debris loosely, pocketed the film and headed upstairs.

Marquez ordered interception.

State officers entered from front and back.

Thomas reached the kitchen.

Stopped.

He must have heard something.

Then he pulled a handgun.

“Drop it!”

He fired once.

Not at officers.

At the window.

Glass shattered.

He ran.

Through the kitchen.

Out the rear door.

Another team waited outside.

Thomas didn't go toward the yard.

He jumped into the basement window well.

There was an old drainage access beneath it.

I hadn't known.

Apparently he had.

He disappeared below ground.

“What the hell?” Richard said.

Old houses had old construction.

Dad had extended drainage during renovations.

Thomas knew the system.

Officers followed.

The passage led beneath the backyard and exited through a storm culvert beyond the neighboring fence.

Thomas emerged where another vehicle waited.

Driver unknown.

He escaped before the outer perimeter adjusted.

Marquez swore.

But the house cameras had captured the microfilm.

We knew what he'd taken.

“Who was driving?”

Traffic footage found the escape vehicle.

Not Rebecca.

Not Andrew.

A woman.

Dark hair.

Slight limp.

Elaine Harrison.

I stared.

“No.”

Peter stood on the video.

“Elaine?”

The car passed another camera.

Elaine driving.

Thomas passenger.

No visible struggle.

“She's working with him.”

Michael said it first.

I didn't accept it yet.

“Or pretending.”

“Why would Thomas trust her?”

“Maybe he doesn't.”

Tyler, watching remotely with Richard's permission, spoke.

“She let Andrew take her too.”

Good point.

Elaine had survived by allowing dangerous men to believe she was useful.

Perhaps she was doing it again.

Then Elaine's phone pinged.

Not message.

Automated scheduled email.

Sent to Marquez.

Subject:

IF THOMAS GETS THE FILM.

Inside:

If you're reading this, I failed to prevent him from reaching Margaret's house. Do not pursue the car immediately. The microfilm is incomplete.

Marquez read aloud.

Daniel split the record across two rolls.

Thomas knows only about the first.

The second roll contains the identity map.

“Where?” I whispered.

Elaine's email continued.

I do not know. But Margaret does.

I laughed bitterly.

“No, Margaret does not.”

Then the final line:

Ask her what Daniel gave her at sixteen after the Cincinnati station.

My memory shifted again.

After the train ride.

Dad came into my room.

He apologized for frightening me.

Then gave me something.

A camera.

Old 35mm.

His.

I loved photography for about six months.

Then lost interest.

“What happened to that camera?” Richard asked.

I hadn't seen it in decades.

Mom stored my childhood things after I married.

When she died, boxes came to my house.

The camera might still exist.

Officers searched the attic.

A cardboard box labeled MARGARET — COLLEGE.

Inside:

Letters.

Yearbooks.

The camera.

A leather Nikon case.

Reynolds opened the back.

No film.

Then checked the battery compartment.

Empty.

The lens case.

Nothing.

Peter said, “Bottom plate.”

Old cameras sometimes had removable motor-drive plates.

Two screws.

Inside was a narrow plastic tube.

Second microfilm roll.

Dad had put it into my hands at sixteen, days after I saw Thomas alive.

I had carried it for months without knowing.

My father used me as storage too.

Even while trying to protect me.

That realization did not feel tender.

It felt exhausting.

“What does it contain?” Marquez asked.

A portable reader was brought.

We digitized the roll.

The images showed tables.

Aliases.

Identity transfers.

Death certificates.

Passport numbers.

Properties.

Then the map.

Names connected by lines.

Thomas Collins sat in the center of early operations.

Andrew Varden beneath him.

Leonard on another branch.

Crowe.

Bell.

Frank.

Robert.

And one name I did not expect.

Daniel Collins.

My father.

Not a victim at the edge.

Inside.

Deep inside.

The dates began seventeen years before the warehouse fire.

Before Dad supposedly became trapped.

My throat tightened.

“How long was he involved?”

Peter read silently.

“From the beginning.”

I felt sick.

Dad had lied in his confession more than I thought.

Then Michael pointed.

“Look.”

Next to Dad's name, a later notation appeared.

DEFECTED — 1998.

That was four years before the warehouse fire.

Dad had been trying to leave for years.

Another notation:

PRIMARY THREAT TO T.C.

Thomas.

Dad's greatest danger had been his brother.

Then the final section.

CONTINGENCY IF D.C.
