I did not know what. The pots were still on the stove. Two glasses remained beside the sink. My blue plate sat where I had left it, with several pieces of dinner untouched near the rim.

The plate.

I remembered Daniel looking at it.

Not Noah's.

Mine.

"Freezer bag," I whispered.

Noah stared at me.

"Drawer beside the sink."

He crawled toward it while I dragged myself back to the table.

Standing was impossible. I was not thinking like an investigator. I was a half-drugged mother kneeling on a kitchen floor while the man I had slept beside for twelve years stood somewhere beyond a door.

But Daniel had tried to control what remained.

That meant what remained mattered.

Noah held the bag open.

My hands shook too badly to manage the food cleanly. I used a fork, pushing several untouched pieces into the plastic.

"Seal it."

He pressed the zipper shut.

"Again."

"What?"

"Make sure."

He ran his fingers across the seal.

I took the bag.

The refrigerator was too obvious.

So was the cabinet.

The freezer was full of frozen vegetables, ice packs, containers of soup, and the neglected remains of meals we always claimed we would eat later.

I opened the bottom drawer and pushed the bag beneath a package of frozen chicken.

The interior garage door clicked.

Noah looked at me.

"Floor."

We moved.

There was no time to return exactly to our previous positions.

I dropped beside the table, rolled onto my shoulder, and pressed my cheek against the tile.

Noah lay near his chair.

"Eyes shut," I whispered.

Footsteps entered the kitchen.

Daniel stopped.

Silence.

I could hear the refrigerator motor.

Then his shoes moved slowly across the floor.

He came toward me first.

My heartbeat felt impossible to conceal.

He crouched.

Two fingers touched my neck.

I concentrated on breathing evenly.

Daniel remained there longer than before.

Then he stood.

He moved to Noah.

I heard fabric shift.

"Good," Daniel whispered.

My stomach clenched.

His footsteps crossed to the table.

A chair moved.

Ceramic scraped against wood.

I knew without looking what he had picked up.

The blue plate.

Daniel carried it toward the sink.

Water ran.

Then stopped.

A cabinet opened.

Another sound followed—something being placed into a bag or container.

He had returned for the plate.

Not for us.

Not because he feared his wife and child might be dying.

For a plate.

The knowledge settled inside me with terrible clarity.

Whatever had happened at dinner had not been accidental.

Daniel moved around the kitchen for several minutes.

He wiped something.

Opened the dishwasher.

Closed it.

The ordinary efficiency of his movements made everything worse. He was not panicking. He was completing tasks.

Then a distant sound entered the room.

Sirens.

Very faint.

Daniel stopped.

For the first time that night, I heard uncertainty in his breathing.

The sirens grew louder.

He walked quickly toward the front of the house.

Then back.

A drawer opened.

Another slammed.

He came toward us.

I opened my eyes.

Daniel was standing six feet away.

The blue plate was gone.

For one second neither of us spoke.

Then Noah sat up.

Daniel's face emptied.

Not dramatically. The change was smaller and therefore more revealing: the careful expression he had worn all evening simply vanished.

"You—"

The sirens were close now.

I pushed myself upright against the cabinet.

Daniel looked at Noah.

Then at me.

Then toward the window.

His mind was working.

I could see him searching for a new version of events.

"What happened?" he said.

I almost admired the speed.

He crossed toward me, suddenly wearing concern.

"Claire, can you hear me?"

I stared at him.

"Don't touch me."

He stopped.

"What?"

"Don't."

"Claire, you're confused."

Noah shifted closer to me.

Daniel noticed.

That hurt him more than anything I said.

"Buddy," he began.

Noah shook his head.

Daniel's jaw tightened.

The doorbell rang.

Then someone pounded hard against the front door.

"Emergency services!"

Daniel looked at me again.

"What did you tell them?"

The question came before Are you okay?

Before Is Noah okay?

Before What happened?

"What did you tell them?"

I said nothing.

The pounding continued.

Daniel moved toward the hallway.

I raised my voice as much as I could.

"We're in the kitchen!"

Footsteps came rapidly through the house.

Two paramedics entered first, followed by a police officer.

Daniel immediately stepped into the role he had chosen.

"Thank God," he said. "My wife and son suddenly collapsed during dinner. I went out to get help because our phones weren't—"

"You went out to get help?" I asked.

He looked at me.

One paramedic knelt beside Noah.

Another came toward me.

Daniel recovered. "I panicked."

The officer watched him.

"Where did you go?"

"I was trying to find someone."

"Someone where?"

"Our neighbor."

"Which neighbor?"

Daniel hesitated.

Only briefly.

But the officer saw it.

"So you drove there?"

"I wasn't thinking clearly."

The paramedic checked my pupils.

"What did you eat?"

"Dinner."

"What kind?"

I told her.

"Any medications?"

I listed mine.

Noah had none.

Daniel interrupted. "She's been exhausted lately. I closed my eyes until the sensation passed.

As they wheeled me through the kitchen, I looked toward the freezer.

The bag was still there.

I said nothing.

Not yet.

At the hospital, Noah and I were placed in adjoining treatment areas separated by a curtain.

Blood was drawn.

Questions came repeatedly.

What had we eaten?

When had symptoms started?

How long had we been unconscious?

Had anyone else eaten the same food?

I answered as precisely as I could.

The more I spoke, the more surreal my own account sounded.

My husband cooked dinner.

My son and I became incapacitated.

My husband removed our phones.

I heard him tell someone it was done.

He left.

He returned for my plate.

A doctor listened without interrupting.

When I finished, he asked, "You said your husband ate with you?"

"Yes."

"Did he become ill?"

"No."

"Did he eat the same food?"

I thought back.

Daniel had served from the same pans.

Or had he?

I remembered him moving between stove and counter.

His gray plate.

Noah's white plate.

My blue one.

"I don't know."

The doctor nodded.

"We'll test what we can."

Daniel arrived later.

I heard his voice before I saw him.

He was speaking to someone outside the curtain, explaining that I had been under tremendous stress.

His version was already growing.

By the time he entered, he had become the patient husband of an overwhelmed wife.

"How are you feeling?"

I looked at him.

"Where's the blue plate?"

His expression changed for perhaps half a second.

"What blue plate?"

"The one I ate from."

"I don't know."

"You took it."

"I cleaned up because there was food everywhere."

"There wasn't."

"Claire, you collapsed. Noah collapsed. I was terrified."

"You sounded calm on the phone."

Daniel's eyes sharpened.

"What phone?"

"The call you made while you thought I couldn't hear you."

He sat very still.

Then he leaned toward me.

"You were barely conscious. You don't know what you heard."

There it was.

Not denial.

Correction.

I looked toward the curtain separating Noah's bed from mine.

Daniel lowered his voice.

"Please don't frighten him with this."

"He heard you too."

That landed.

Daniel leaned back.

A nurse entered with the doctor.

The doctor held a chart.

"We have preliminary toxicology results."

Daniel stood.

"What did you find?"

The doctor looked at me rather than him.

"You and your son both tested positive for a sedating substance."

My mouth went dry.

"Was it something prescribed to either of us?"

"No."

Daniel immediately said, "There must be some mistake."

The doctor did not respond to him.

"We'll need additional testing to determine the amount and confirm the findings."

Daniel crossed his arms.

"Could they have taken it accidentally?"

Noah pulled the curtain aside.

"I didn't take anything."

Daniel looked toward him.

"Buddy, nobody's blaming you."

"I know."

The coldness in Noah's voice sounded much older than twelve.

The police officer from the house appeared at the doorway with another officer.

One of them asked, "Mrs. Mercer, you mentioned food from the dinner."

Daniel turned.

I looked at him.

He believed the plate was gone.

For the first time since I had hit the kitchen floor, I had something he did not know.

I reached beneath my shirt, where I had hidden the folded freezer bag before the ambulance left.

Daniel's face changed when he saw it.

"I saved part of my dinner," I said.

The officer took the sealed bag carefully.

Daniel stared at it.

He had remembered the blue plate.

He had remembered our phones.

He had remembered the story he wanted to tell.

But he had never opened the freezer.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: The Hospital Tests Gave Daniel Less Room to Lie, but His Most Careful Explanation Exposed a Problem He Had Not Expected

The sweep of headlights across the blinds lasted less than three seconds, but it divided the night into everything we had understood before and everything we understood now.
