Some business investments."

"Does he have any legal interest in your house?"

"Not that I know."

"Does he have financial ties to Daniel now?"

"I don't know."

Ruiz nodded.

"Richard's company has been struggling."

"How badly?"

"Significantly."

"Daniel never said."

"We've found several debts."

"What does that have to do with Noah?"

"We're working on it."

I stared at the screen.

"Show me the messages."

There were months of them.

Not daily.

Not affectionate.

Transactional.

Richard: Have you handled the insurance?

Daniel: Working on it.

Richard: Stop working and finish.

Another.

Daniel: She won't sign anything.

Richard: Then give her a reason.

Another.

Daniel: Noah complicates it.

Richard: Noah is the only part that matters.

I stopped.

"What does that mean?"

Ruiz shook her head.

"We don't know."

"Keep going."

Daniel: Claire asks questions.

Richard: That's your fault.

Daniel: She noticed the transfer.

Richard: Tell her it's for your brother.

My stomach twisted.

Richard had helped construct the lie.

The eight thousand.

The brother.

All of it.

"Did Richard know about Marissa?"

"Yes."

Another message confirmed it.

Richard: Your girlfriend is becoming a liability.

Daniel: Leave her out of this.

Richard: You brought her in.

Daniel: She can get what I need.

Richard: Then use her and stop talking.

I looked away.

There was no affection in Richard's language.

People were tools.

Marissa.

Me.

Perhaps Daniel too.

"Did Richard tell him to drug us?"

Ruiz scrolled.

"No direct message says that."

"But he knew."

"Likely knew some portion of the plan."

"Where is Richard?"

"At his residence."

"You haven't arrested him?"

"Not yet."

"Why?"

"Because suspicion is not enough."

"Bring the documents and the boy."

Ruiz nodded.

"We're examining that message carefully."

"What documents?"

"We believe financial or property documents."

"And the boy is Noah."

"Likely."

"Why would Richard want him?"

Ruiz closed the laptop.

"We found something else in Daniel's storage unit."

"What?"

"A copy of a trust."

I frowned.

"What trust?"

"Created by Daniel's grandfather."

Daniel's grandfather had died before Noah was born.

I knew there had been family money.

I had never known details.

"Daniel inherited something?"

"Not exactly."

Ruiz slid a document toward me.

The language was dense.

Names.

Dates.

Conditions.

I found Daniel's name.

Then Noah's.

My finger stopped.

"Why is Noah in this?"

"The trust was amended after his birth."

"By whom?"

"The trustee and Daniel's grandfather before his death."

"How much?"

Ruiz gave me the figure.

I thought I had misheard.

"Say that again."

She did.

The trust held several properties and investment accounts.

Its current estimated value exceeded three million dollars.

I stared at the page.

"Daniel never told me."

"Did you know Noah was a beneficiary?"

"No."

"Richard is also involved."

"How?"

"Contingent trustee."

I read the section again.

The words began making sense.

If Daniel controlled custody of Noah under certain conditions, Daniel could exercise limited authority over distributions for Noah's benefit.

If Daniel were unavailable, Richard could become trustee.

"So they wanted access to Noah's money."

"That is one potential motive."

"Three million dollars."

"Not immediately liquid, and not freely available."

"But enough."

"Enough to motivate financial misconduct, potentially."

I stood and walked away from the table.

Every strange detail rearranged itself.

The property company.

The transfers.

Richard's failing business.

Daniel's obsession with custody.

My supposed instability.

Noah was not simply a son Daniel wanted to take.

He was leverage.

Money.

A beneficiary.

"Does Noah know?"

"About the trust?"

"No."

"Should I tell him?"

"That's a parenting decision."

"I don't want him thinking his father drugged him for money."

"We don't yet know that was Daniel's sole motive."

"Sole motive."

I laughed bitterly.

"That's comforting."

Ruiz let it pass.

"Richard's company has significant debt coming due."

"How much?"

"More than a million."

"And Daniel?"

"Personal debt too."

I looked at her.

"What debt?"

"Loans you may not know about."

"How much?"

"Approximately two hundred thousand."

My knees weakened.

"We don't have two hundred thousand."

"Correct."

"Where did it come from?"

"Business investments, gambling activity, personal borrowing."

"Gambling?"

That word felt more foreign than affair.

Daniel criticized people who bought lottery tickets.

"Online betting."

"For how long?"

"At least eighteen months."

I sat.

There had been another Daniel inside the first.

Debts.

Affair.

Secret property.

Secret phones.

Secret plans.

The man I knew was becoming a shell around people I had never met.

"What happens to the trust if I die?"

Ruiz's eyes sharpened.

"That's important."

She reopened the document.

"If you died while Daniel retained parental rights, his control over Noah's affairs could increase."

"And if I survived but looked unstable?"

"Custody proceedings could become relevant."

I understood.

C agrees.

C medical.

Either I voluntarily signed.

Or Daniel created circumstances that weakened my position.

"And Richard?"

"If Daniel obtained control and then transferred permitted funds or used trust-related property improperly, Richard's businesses might benefit."

"Could Daniel simply give him the money?"

"Not legally."

"But legality doesn't seem to be the family's strongest value right now."

Ruiz did not disagree.

"Why would Daniel abandon the birth certificate?"

"Maybe he knows the border plan is impossible."

"Or Richard changed the plan."

"Possible."

"Where is Daniel?"

"We're still searching."

"Have you questioned Richard?"

"Investigators are with him now."

My phone buzzed.

A text.

Unknown number again.

I looked at Ruiz before opening it.

She nodded.

The message contained an address.

Nothing else.

I recognized it.

Richard's construction yard.

Then another message appeared.

Come alone if you want the truth.

Ruiz took the phone.

"You're not going."

"I know."

A third message arrived.

Ask your detective why she hasn't told you about the fire.

I looked at Ruiz.

She became completely still.

"What fire?"

She did not answer immediately.

"What fire, Elena?"

It was the first time I had used her first name.

Ruiz sat down.

"Richard Mercer owned another property twelve years ago."

"Okay."

"There was a fire."

"When?"

"Two months before Daniel and I married."

"Why does that matter?"

"Someone died."

My stomach tightened.

"Who?"

"A woman named Rebecca Mercer."

The surname struck me.

"Daniel's mother?"

"No."

"Then who?"

Ruiz held my gaze.

"Daniel's first wife."

The room disappeared around me.

"Daniel wasn't married before me."

Ruiz said nothing.

"He told me I was his first marriage."

"I know."

"Who was Rebecca?"

"His wife for four years."

I stared at her.

"How did she die?"

"House fire."

"Accident?"

"Officially."

That word changed everything.

"Officially?"

"The fire was ruled accidental at the time."

"Why are you looking at it now?"

"Because Rebecca had a life insurance policy."

I knew before Ruiz finished.

"Daniel?"

"Primary beneficiary."

"How much?"

"Four hundred thousand dollars."

My hands began shaking.

"What did he do with it?"

"Part of it appears to have gone into Richard's company."

I stood.

The same family.

The same money.

The same pattern.

"Was Rebecca drugged?"

Ruiz looked at me.

"We don't know."

"Did she have prescription bottles around her?"

"Claire—"

"Answer me."

"Investigators from the old case documented medication in the house."

My skin turned cold.

"What medication?"

"We're retrieving the complete records."

"Was Daniel home?"

"No."

"Where was he?"

"He said he was at Richard's construction yard."

"And Richard confirmed it."

Ruiz nodded.

I looked at the message again.

Ask your detective why she hasn't told you about the fire.

Whoever sent it knew police were reopening old history.

Daniel.

Richard.

Or someone else.

Then Ruiz's phone rang.

She answered.

Her face tightened.

"Repeat that."

She listened.

"When?"

Another pause.

"Keep units there."

She hung up.

"What happened?"

"Richard isn't at his house."

"Then where is he?"

"We don't know."

"Daniel?"

"No sign."

The message on my phone suddenly felt less like bait and more like coordination.

Richard's construction yard.

Come alone.

I looked at Ruiz.

"They're together."

"Possibly."

"Daniel abandoned the car and phone because Richard picked him up."

"We're checking cameras."

"And the fire?"

Ruiz gathered the documents.

"We're checking that too."

Noah came downstairs before I could stop him.

He looked from me to Ruiz.

"What happened?"

I folded the trust document.

"Nothing you need to hear yet."

His expression hardened.

"Mom."

I closed my eyes.

No more adult evasions.

"Your grandfather Richard may be helping your dad."

Noah absorbed that.

"Why?"

"We don't know everything."

He looked at Ruiz.

"Is Grandpa missing too?"

She nodded.

Noah sat beside me.

Then he asked a question neither Ruiz nor I had considered.

"If Grandpa wanted Dad to bring me to him, why did Dad tell Mom that Marissa started everything?"

Ruiz looked at him.

Noah continued.

"Maybe Dad wasn't warning Mom about Marissa."

"What do you mean?" I asked.

"Maybe he wanted police to look at her instead of Grandpa."

The room went silent.

My twelve-year-old had seen through a piece of misdirection I had accepted because betrayal made it easy to believe.

Daniel's letter.

Do not trust Marissa.

There are people you don't know.

He had told the truth and lied in the same paragraph.

There was someone I did not know.

Not Marissa.

Richard.

Or at least the version of Richard who existed behind Daniel's messages.

Ruiz's phone buzzed again.

This time she showed me the screen.

Traffic-camera photograph.

A pickup truck leaving the river area shortly after Daniel abandoned the stolen sedan.

The truck belonged to Mercer Construction.

Two men were visible in front.

Richard drove.

Daniel sat beside him.

They were together.

And according to the next camera, Richard's truck was heading toward the same construction yard from the message sent to my phone.

<a
