A corrugated metal office stood near the entrance. Behind it were equipment sheds, piles of lumber, concrete forms, dumpsters, trailers, and enough machinery to hide a person from anyone who did not know where to look.

Daniel had grown up there.

He knew every corner.

So did Richard.

Detective Ruiz left immediately.

Before going, she made me promise not to respond to the unknown number.

"Even if Daniel calls?"

"Especially then."

"What if he tells me where he is?"

"Call us."

"What if he says he'll turn himself in only if I come?"

"You still don't go."

"I understand."

"Claire."

"I understand."

Noah watched from the stairs.

After Ruiz left, he asked, "Are they going to shoot Dad?"

The question stopped me.

"They want to arrest him safely."

"That's not what I asked."

"No."

I sat beside him.

"If he cooperates, nobody wants him hurt."

"What if Grandpa has a gun?"

"I don't know."

"Grandpa has guns."

My head snapped toward him.

"What?"

"I've seen them."

"When?"

"At the yard."

I called Ruiz immediately.

She already knew Richard had registered firearms.

Still, Noah's memory mattered because one rifle had apparently been stored in Richard's office.

"Did you see where?"

Ruiz asked him over speaker.

"Behind the big cabinet."

"What kind of cabinet?"

"Metal. Gray."

"When?"

"Last Christmas."

Ruiz thanked him.

Afterward Noah looked sick.

"Did I get Grandpa in trouble?"

"No."

"I told them about the gun."

"If he's in trouble, it isn't because you told the truth."

That sentence sounded familiar.

Something I might have said about a broken window or schoolyard argument.

Now truth carried armed officers toward my father-in-law.

At 4:06 p.m., Ruiz sent one message.

Yard secured. Neither located. I will call.

Neither.

Daniel and Richard had been caught on camera heading there.

Yet by the time police arrived, they were gone.

I paced the guest room.

Noah stopped asking me to sit.

At 5:20, Ruiz called.

"We found Richard's truck."

"At the yard?"

"Behind one of the equipment sheds."

"So they switched vehicles again."

"Likely."

"Was anything inside?"

"Daniel's jacket."

The jacket from the truck-stop footage.

"Anything else?"

"Blood."

My breath stopped.

"Whose?"

"We don't know."

"How much?"

"Small amount."

"Where?"

"Passenger side."

Daniel's side.

"Was someone injured?"

"Possibly."

"Could Richard have hurt him?"

"We're not speculating."

I almost shouted.

Instead I walked to the bathroom and closed the door.

"What did you find in the office?"

"Records."

"What kind?"

"Financial records. Insurance documents. Old company files."

"Rebecca?"

Silence.

"Elena."

"Yes."

I sat on the edge of the tub.

"What?"

"Richard retained copies of documents connected to the property where Rebecca died."

"Why?"

"We don't know."

"Was it his property?"

"Yes."

"I thought Daniel and Rebecca lived there."

"They rented it from Richard."

"Convenient."

Ruiz did not respond.

"What did the fire report say?"

"We have the preliminary archive."

"And?"

"The official cause was electrical."

"So why does it matter now?"

"Because an investigator noted inconsistencies that were never fully resolved."

"What inconsistencies?"

"Rebecca was found in an upstairs bedroom."

"Okay."

"Fire originated downstairs."

I waited.

"The report suggested she may not have awakened normally."

My skin prickled.

"Drugged?"

"No toxicology capable of establishing what we're looking for was completed beyond routine screening."

"Why?"

"Evidence at the time didn't strongly indicate poisoning."

"Medication?"

"Sedatives were found in the bathroom."

My fingers tightened.

"Prescription?"

"Rebecca had a prescription."

Unlike me.

Daniel had learned.

If Rebecca legitimately possessed medication, her death required no staging with stolen bottles.

Maybe twelve years later he had needed to manufacture the same appearance around me.

"Did she take them that night?"

"Unknown."

"Was Daniel questioned?"

"Yes."

"Suspect?"

"Briefly considered, then cleared."

"Because Richard gave him an alibi."

"Among other evidence."

"What other evidence?"

"Daniel was captured on a gas-station camera near the construction yard during part of the relevant period."

"Could he have started the fire earlier?"

"Potentially. But I'm not reopening the case by myself over the phone."

I rubbed my eyes.

"Why did Daniel marry me without telling me?"

"I can't answer that."

"Did he change his name?"

"No."

"How did I never find her?"

"Rebecca used her maiden name professionally. Daniel rarely discussed that period. Public records existed, but unless you had reason to search—"

"I didn't."

Trust again.

The invisible permission that had allowed Daniel to build entire rooms inside our marriage and keep the doors closed.

"Did Marissa know about Rebecca?"

"She says no."

"So he lied to both of us about that too."

"Yes."

A knock came at the bathroom door.

"Mom?"

"I'm okay."

Noah replied, "You always say that when you're not."

Ruiz heard him.

"Go be with your son."

"Call me if you find anything."

"I will."

I opened the door.

Noah stood there holding my phone charger.

"You left this downstairs."

"Thanks."

He did not leave.

"What was Dad's first wife like?"

I stared.

"You heard."

"The door isn't soundproof."

I sat on the bed.

"Her name was Rebecca."

"Did Dad love her?"

"I don't know."

"Did he kill her?"

"I don't know."

Noah looked toward the floor.

"Do you think he was going to kill you?"

The answer had changed.

At first I had resisted it because murder felt too enormous to place beside the man who complained when I left wet towels on the bathroom floor.

Now I had seen Daniel's notes.

My empty prescription bottles.

His research.

C medical.

"I think he was willing to let something very bad happen to me."

Noah sat beside me.

"That's yes."

I did not correct him.

That evening, Marissa asked to speak with me.

Ruiz called first.

"You don't have to."

"Does she want to apologize?"

"She wants to tell you something about Richard."

I agreed.

The call came through a police-controlled line.

Marissa's voice was quieter than on the recordings.

"Claire?"

"Yes."

"I'm sorry."

I closed my eyes.

"Don't start there."

"Okay."

"Tell me about Richard."

She breathed in.

"Daniel was scared of him."

"Daniel helped him."

"Both can be true."

I hated that she was right.

"What did Richard want?"

"Money."

"From Noah's trust."

"You know?"

"Now I do."

Marissa became silent.

"Daniel told you?"

"Eventually."

"When?"

"About two months ago."

"What did he say?"

"That Richard had debts. That the company was going under. That Richard believed some trust assets could save it."

"And Daniel agreed?"

"At first he said no."

"Then what?"

"He owed Richard money too."

"How much?"

"I don't know."

"Why?"

"Gambling. Investments. Richard covered some losses."

The financial chain became clearer.

Richard rescued Daniel.

Then owned him.

"Where do I fit?"

Marissa's voice trembled.

"Richard said you would never let Daniel control Noah's trust."

"He was right."

"I know."

"Did Richard tell Daniel to kill me?"

"No."

"Did Daniel?"

"No. Not to me."

"What did he say?"

"That you needed to be out of the way."

My stomach tightened.

"His words?"

"Yes."

"How?"

"He said if you had a medical incident, he could take Noah temporarily."

"Temporarily."

"That's what he said."

"And the forged permission letter?"

"I thought it was for after you agreed."

"You believed a forged signature was for after I agreed?"

She was silent.

"Marissa."

"I stopped asking questions because I wanted what Daniel promised."

There it was.

Not innocence.

Selfishness.

"What did he promise?"

"A family."

Her voice cracked slightly.

"I know how that sounds."

"It sounds exactly like what it was."

"Yes."

"What about Rebecca?"

"I didn't know until yesterday."

"How?"

"Richard mentioned her."

"When?"

"At the motel."

I sat straighter.

"Richard was at the motel?"

"Not physically. Daniel called him on speaker."

"What did Richard say?"

"Daniel was panicking because you woke up. Richard told him he'd already survived one wife making things difficult and he could survive another."

Cold moved through me.

"Exact words?"

"Close."

"What did Daniel say?"

"Nothing for a few seconds."

"And then?"

"He told Richard never to mention Rebecca again."

I stood.

"Did that sound like a threat?"

"It sounded like fear."

"Fear of what?"

"I don't know."

"Did Richard say anything else?"

"Yes."

Marissa hesitated.

"He said, 'You should've done it the old way.'"

My mouth went dry.

"What does that mean?"

"I don't know."

But we both did.

Or thought we did.

Fire.

Rebecca.

The old way.

"Did you tell Ruiz?"

"Yes."

"Good."

"Claire."

"What?"

"There's something else."

I waited.

"Daniel told me once that his father had saved him from Rebecca."

"Saved him how?"

"He wouldn't explain."

"When?"

"Months ago. We were arguing about Richard."

"Why?"

"I told Daniel his father controlled him."

"And?"

"He said, 'You don't understand what he did for me after Rebecca.'"

I closed my eyes.

Richard's alibi.

Richard's property.

Richard's company receiving insurance money.

Two men tied together by a dead wife and a financial rescue.

"Anything else?"

"One thing."

Marissa lowered her voice.

"Daniel keeps a key on his car ring that doesn't belong to any car or house."

"Storage unit?"

"No. Different key."

"How do you know?"

"I asked. He told me never to touch it."

"What does it look like?"

"Small brass key. Red plastic cap."

I had seen it.

For years.

Daniel's key ring carried a tiny brass key with faded red plastic around the top.

I had once asked what it opened.

"Old toolbox," he said.

I told Marissa.

She became quiet.

"I don't think it's a toolbox."

"Why?"

"Because Richard has the same key."

After the call, I immediately told Ruiz.

She searched photographs from the construction yard.

One investigator had documented a key cabinet in Richard's office.

Dozens of labeled hooks.

Trucks.

Trailers.

Equipment.

One hook was empty.

Its handwritten label said only:

H-14.

Ruiz checked company property records.

Mercer Construction owned no current site numbered H-14.

But twelve years earlier, it had.

A rural rental property listed internally as House 14.

The house where Rebecca Mercer died.

The property had never been sold.

After the fire, Richard rebuilt only a small detached workshop and storage structure at the rear of the land.

The address had sat unused ever since.

Ruiz called me at 9:43 p.m.

"We're sending units there."

"Daniel and Richard?"

"We don't know."

"What's at House 14?"

"Mostly an abandoned parcel and an old outbuilding."

"With a lock that takes a brass key."

"Possibly."

"Elena."

"Yes?"

"Be careful."

She was silent for a moment.

"We will."

Police reached the property twenty-eight minutes later.

No Daniel.

No Richard.

But the outbuilding door had been opened recently.

Inside, investigators found fresh tire tracks, two folding chairs, bottled water, blankets, a portable heater, and enough packaged food for several days.

A temporary hiding place.

On the workbench lay a burned photograph.

Most of the image was destroyed.

One corner remained.

Daniel, younger.

Rebecca beside him.

Richard behind them.

And someone else whose face had been almost completely burned away.

On the back, written in Rebecca's handwriting, were five words:

If anything happens, ask Thomas.

Click here to continue reading: PART 12: Rebecca’s Burned Photograph Led Us to the One Man Richard Had Kept Out of Every Story About the Night She Died

I was not allowed anywhere near the construction yard.
