Daniel says the loans are his father's problem, but Daniel signed my name. Richard says families survive by protecting one another. I think what he means is that everyone protects Richard.

Daniel has become frightened of him, but fear doesn't make Daniel safe. When he's scared, he lies. When the lies fail, he asks Richard to fix things.

I found papers about Owen and the quarry properties. Daniel says Owen is trying to destroy the family. I think Owen discovered something.

If anything happens to me, don't let Richard decide what the story was.

I stopped reading.

"She knew about Owen before he disappeared?"

"Apparently."

"But Owen disappeared before Rebecca died."

"About eleven months before."

I had misunderstood the timeline.

Rebecca had lived almost a year knowing something terrible had happened.

"What did she find?"

Ruiz pointed to another paragraph.

Rebecca described a ledger.

Payments from Richard's company.

Cash withdrawals.

A notation beside Owen's name.

Q14.

Quarry 14.

"Did Thomas have the ledger?"

"No."

"Richard?"

"Possibly in the safe."

"Have you found it?"

"Not yet."

I kept reading.

The final paragraph changed everything.

Daniel came home last night and told me his father can make Owen disappear on paper the same way he disappeared in real life. I asked Daniel what that meant. He said I didn't want to know. I think he knows where Owen is.

I placed the paper down.

"Daniel knew."

"Yes."

"He told me he watched Owen die."

"Which goes beyond what Rebecca knew."

"So why did Thomas confront him?"

"Because Thomas believed Daniel had been more involved than he admitted."

"Was he?"

Ruiz looked toward the interview-room wall.

"Daniel now says he helped move Owen."

My stomach turned.

"He lied to me again."

"Yes."

"What did he do?"

"After Owen stopped moving, Richard ordered Daniel to help load him into a company truck."

"And the quarry?"

"Daniel says he left before burial."

"Do you believe him?"

"We'll compare his statement with physical evidence."

"His watch."

"Yes."

"What if he dropped it while moving Owen?"

"Possible."

"Then Richard didn't plant it."

"Also possible."

Daniel's confession kept changing shape whenever evidence closed another exit.

"He'll admit only what you can prove."

Ruiz did not disagree.

"Did he admit anything about Rebecca?"

"More."

My chest tightened.

"What?"

"The night of the fire, Daniel argued with Rebecca about leaving him."

"Thomas said she planned to."

"Yes."

"Did Daniel drug her?"

"He says no."

"Did he know she had taken medication?"

"Yes."

"Did he tell Richard?"

"Yes."

There it was.

"Then Richard knew she might not wake."

"Yes."

"What did Daniel ask him to do?"

"Talk to her. Convince her not to go to police."

"And Richard went to House 14."

"According to Daniel."

"Then the house burned."

"Yes."

"Daniel never asked why."

"He says he did."

I stared.

"What did Richard say?"

Ruiz's expression hardened.

"That Rebecca had finally stopped causing problems."

I looked away.

There are sentences too ugly to absorb immediately.

"Daniel took the insurance money."

"Yes."

"He gave Richard part."

"Yes."

"So whatever he suspected, he accepted the result."

"Yes."

The pattern was no longer ambiguous.

Richard created solutions.

Daniel benefited.

Then Daniel learned to create his own.

When I became inconvenient, he did not start with fire.

He started with sedation and paperwork.

But the architecture was the same.

Remove the person.

Control the story.

Collect the benefit.

"What did Richard want from Noah's trust exactly?"

"Investigators found draft loan documents in the safe."

"Using trust property?"

"Yes."

"How much?"

"Approximately 1.4 million dollars."

I stared.

"To save Mercer Construction."

"Primarily."

"And Daniel?"

"Would have received enough to cover his debts and finance relocation."

"So my son's inheritance was going to rescue both of them."

"That appears to have been the financial plan."

"And if I objected…"

"C medical."

The words no longer looked cryptic.

They looked like inheritance.

Ruiz's phone rang.

She listened.

Her expression changed.

"What?"

She raised a finger.

Then: "Secure the location.
