that?”

“Yes.”

“What did you say?”

“I asked how I would know.”

“And?”

“He said the calm person is usually telling the truth.”

Richard’s old letter to Margaret came back to me.

People believe whoever stays calm.

He had been teaching our daughter his defense before he ever needed to use it.

I reached for Lucy’s hand.

“What do you think now?”

She was quiet for a long time.

Then she said, “Sometimes the scared person is scared because something really happened.”

“Yes.”

“And sometimes the calm person is calm because he already knows what he’s going to say.”

I stared at her.

Nine years old.

She had understood what adults around Richard had missed for years.

Before I could answer, Beth’s phone rang in the kitchen.

She answered.

Her voice changed.

“Claire.”

I stood.

Officer Brooks was calling.

They had searched Thomas Weller’s people.

Mine.

Lucy’s.

Hannah’s.

Natalie’s old passport.

And Emily’s childhood passport.

But there was one more file.

A folder marked BENNETT.

Inside were recent photographs of me.

Leaving the grocery store.

Walking Hannah to school.

Standing outside Beth’s house months earlier.

I stared at the phone.

“Months?”

Officer Brooks confirmed it.

Someone had been watching me before I knew there was a plan.

Then she told me the date of the earliest photograph.

It was taken two days after I secretly called Beth for the first time in nearly two years and hung up before she answered.

Richard had known I was thinking about reaching for help almost from the moment I tried.
