to her?”

“Anna says Margaret arranged a private adoption.”

I stood.

“Richard knew?”

“According to Anna, no.”

I stared at the wall.

“Why?”

“Anna says Margaret told her Richard was dangerous and that the baby would never be safe if he knew.”

That sounded almost taking the girls.”

I could barely breathe.

“It was about taking me.”

“Yes.”

“Then why leave me in the hospital?”

“To make you follow voluntarily.”

The word voluntarily made me sick.

Kidnap the children.

Wait for the mother to chase them.

Call the pursuit consent.

I looked at Beth.

Her face had gone white.

Officer Brooks continued.

“Margaret claims Richard had arranged a place for the family to stay.”

“His relatives?”

“No.”

“What place?”

“A property controlled through Thomas Weller.”

My stomach tightened.

“Where?”

“A rural area several hours from the city listed on the tickets.”

I pressed my hands together to stop them shaking.

“And what was supposed to happen there?”

“Margaret has not fully answered.”

“Why?”

“She says there is one thing she wants guaranteed first.”

“Grace.”

“Yes.”

I stood.

“Richard doesn’t even know Grace exists.”

“That appears to be true.”

“Then tell Margaret to leave her out of it.”

“Investigators are handling that.”

I walked toward the window.

Outside, children were riding bicycles down Beth’s street.

Ordinary life continued with insulting ease.

“What did Margaret say about me?”

Officer Brooks hesitated.

“Claire.”

“Tell me.”

“She said Richard had become convinced you owed him one final chance to have a son.”

The room seemed to tilt.

My body remembered every conversation.

Every accusation.

Every time he looked at Hannah and saw absence instead of a child.

Every time Margaret told me there was still time.

Every time my medical concerns became selfishness.

“He knew another pregnancy could be dangerous.”

“Yes.”

“He didn’t care.”

Officer Brooks did not answer.

I turned around.

“Did Margaret?”

Her silence was answer enough.

Then her phone rang.

She checked the screen.

“Excuse me.”

She stepped into the hallway.

Beth came to me.

“Sit down.”

“I don’t want to sit down.”

“Then don’t.”

I pressed my palm against the window.

“I thought the worst thing he wanted was to take them.”

Beth stood beside me.

“I know.”

“He wanted all of us.”

“Yes.”

“To put us somewhere I couldn’t leave.”

“Yes.”

“And Margaret knew.”

“Yes.”

Officer Brooks returned.

Her expression had changed.

“What?”

She looked at me.

“Margaret has agreed to give the rest of her statement.”

“Why?”

“Something happened.”

My stomach tightened.

“What?”

“Thomas Weller has started cooperating.”

Beth and I looked at each other.

Officer Brooks continued.

“He told investigators about the property.”

“What did he say?”

“That Richard had visited it twice this year.”

I could hear my heartbeat.

“Why?”

“To prepare it.”

“For us?”

“Yes.”

“What does prepare mean?”

Officer Brooks’s voice became careful.

“Locks were changed.”

My mouth went dry.

“Anything else?”

“Security cameras installed.”

Beth whispered, “Jesus.”

Officer Brooks continued.

“And according to Weller, Richard asked him a question during the second visit.”

I waited.

“What question?”

“He asked whether the nearest hospital was far enough away that nobody would come looking if his wife had another accident.”

Nobody moved.

The phrase was familiar.

Another accident.

A fall.

A fragile wife.

A woman who bruised easily.

A woman who was unstable.

A woman whose husband had been preparing the explanation long before anything happened.

I looked toward the blanket fort where Lucy and Hannah were laughing.

Richard had planned a house where he controlled the locks.

The cameras.

The transportation.

The children.

And the story people would hear if I got hurt.

Then Officer Brooks said, “There’s one more thing Weller gave us.”

“What?”

“A copy of the document Richard planned to have you sign after you arrived.”

She showed me the first page on her phone.

My name was printed at the top.

Below it was a statement saying I had voluntarily relocated with my husband and daughters, withdrawn all allegations of abuse, and consented to Richard exercising sole control over the children’s travel documents.

I scrolled down.

There was another clause.

I read it twice.

Beth read it over my shoulder.

Neither of us spoke.

The document authorized Richard to make medical decisions for me if I became “emotionally or physically incapacitated.”

At the bottom was an empty line waiting for my signature.

Richard had already prepared the life he meant to force me into.

All he had needed was to get me there.

Click here to continue reading: PART 13: Thomas Weller Finally
