eyes.

“Yes.”

Maya shifted beside me.

I felt strangely calm.

“Did Richard intend to force another pregnancy at that house?”

Margaret’s attorney started to speak.

Margaret interrupted him.

“Yes.”

The room became silent.

Officer Brooks stopped writing for half a second.

I looked directly at Margaret.

“How do you know?”

“He told me.”

“When?”

“At the property.”

“What did he say?”

Her attorney objected quietly, but Margaret continued.

“He said once you understood you couldn’t take the girls away, you would remember your duty.”

My stomach turned.

“What duty?”

“To give him a son.”

I could barely hear my own voice.

“And if I refused?”

Margaret looked at the table.

“He said you had refused before.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

She started crying again.

“Margaret.”

She looked up.

“What did he say?”

Her voice broke.

“He said eventually you would stop refusing.”

I sat completely still.

There were no words large enough for what that meant.

Maya’s hand closed around mine.

I did not look away from Margaret.

“And you still helped prepare the house.”

“Yes.”

“You ordered the lock.”

“Yes.”

“You wrote the medication instructions.”

“Yes.”

“You intercepted Caroline’s letter.”

“Yes.”

“You helped with the passports.”

“Yes.”

Each answer came smaller.

I asked the final question.

“If Richard had gotten my daughters onto that plane, would you have stopped him?”

Margaret cried silently.

I waited.

“Would you?”

“No.”

The truth was quiet.

That made it worse.

I stood.

Margaret looked up.

“Claire, I’m sorry.”

I picked up my bag.

“No.”

She flinched.

“That word is for something that ended.”

I walked toward the door.

Officer Brooks opened it.

Before I left, Margaret spoke again.

“There’s one more thing.”

I stopped but did not turn.

“What?”

“The morning Richard hurt you.”

My hand tightened around the bag.

“He didn’t lose control because of breakfast.”

I turned.

Margaret’s face had gone white.

“What are you talking about?”

“He had received a message before he came downstairs.”

“From whom?”

“Thomas.”

My pulse rose.

“What did it say?”

“That Caroline had contacted Natalie again.”

I stared at her.

Margaret continued.

“Richard knew the police might eventually connect you.”

“So he decided to move the plan forward.”

“Yes.”

“The beating was deliberate?”

Margaret looked at me.

“He needed you in the hospital.”

The room seemed to tilt.

Not an argument that went too far.

Not a temper triggered by my sentence about our daughters.

A timetable.

He needed me injured enough to be removed from the house while Margaret packed Lucy and Hannah.

The assault had been part of the travel plan.

I looked at Officer Brooks.

She was already writing.

Margaret continued.

“He told me before breakfast that if you gave him a reason, he would use it.”

My mouth went dry.

“And if I hadn’t?”

Margaret’s answer came after a long silence.

“He would have found one.”

For years Richard had told me I caused his violence by saying the wrong thing.

That morning, apparently, there had never been a right thing I could have said.

He had already decided what my body was for.

A hospital bed.

A delay.

An explanation.

A missing mother while her daughters were taken away.

I opened the door.

This time when Margaret called my name, I did not turn around.

Outside the interview room, Maya stood beside me until my breathing settled.

Then Officer Brooks emerged.

Her expression was grave.

“Margaret’s statement changes the investigation.”

“How?”

“If corroborated, the assault may be connected more directly to the planned removal of the children.”

I nodded.

“Can it be corroborated?”

“We already have something.”

“What?”

She showed me a recovered message from Richard’s second phone.

Sent to Thomas at 6:42 that morning.

Before breakfast.

Before I said anything.

Before Richard dragged me outside.

Richard:

Today. Have everything ready.

Thomas:

What about Claire?

Richard:

Mom knows what to do. Claire won’t be coming home tonight.

I read the last sentence twice.

Claire won’t be coming home tonight.

Richard had known.

Not because he lost his temper.

Because he had planned where I would end up.

And for the first time since leaving him, I understood something that made me feel less confused rather than more afraid.

There had never been a version of that morning in which better behavior saved me.

The violence was not the consequence of my failure.

It was his decision before I ever opened my mouth.

Click here to continue reading: PART 17: Richard’s Message Proved the Beating Was Part of His Plan, and the Evidence Finally Forced Thomas Weller to Stop Calling Himself a Friend

Margaret asked to see me.
