He told Ruiz that patrol officers had reached our house and Richard was now outside. Meredith had called because he refused to leave after she asked him several times. Richard had not forced entry, threatened her, or become physically violent, but he had demanded to know where Chloe was.

“How did he know we left?” I asked.

The officer glanced at Ruiz.

She answered instead. “That's something we'll establish.”

I already knew the most obvious answer.

Meredith.

She had watched us drive away. Right now we preserve what exists and verify the sequence.”

It was the first thing anyone had said all afternoon that cut cleanly through my anger.

She was right.

I had spent years allowing Meredith's family to explain away what was in front of me. I could not respond by making the opposite mistake and treating assumptions as evidence.

“Okay.”

Ruiz looked at Chloe. “Has anyone in your family ever asked you to delete messages?”

Chloe thought.

“Grandpa did once.”

My head turned.

Ruiz remained still. “Tell me about that.”

“It wasn't about this.”

“That's okay.”

“He got mad because I sent Grandma a picture.”

“What picture?”

“His garage.”

“Why didn't he want you to send it?”

“I don't know. He said I wasn't supposed to photograph things at his house.”

Ruiz wrote something down.

I remembered Richard's garage. It was detached from the main house, larger than most two-car garages, with a workshop occupying one side. He restored old furniture and kept tools arranged with obsessive precision. Chloe had once described it as Grandpa's museum because touching anything without permission triggered a lecture.

“What was in the picture?” I asked.

“Just stuff.”

Ruiz raised a hand gently, stopping me from pushing.

“When did this happen, Chloe?”

“Maybe Christmas?”

“Do you still have the picture?”

“I deleted it because he told me to.”

“Did he watch you delete it?”

“Yes.”

“Anything else he made you delete?”

Chloe shook her head.

Ruiz noted that too.

A nurse returned with discharge instructions, interrupting the interview. Chloe's injuries did not require hospitalization, but the physician wanted follow-up care and advised us to return immediately if she developed worsening pain. The nurse handed me several pages in a plain folder.

The word suspected abuse appeared near the top.

Seeing it printed felt different from thinking it.

There was no longer any family vocabulary available to soften what had happened.

Not discipline.

Not strictness.

Not a generational difference.

Abuse.

Chloe leaned against me while the adults spoke. The adrenaline that had kept her alert all afternoon was wearing off. Her eyelids looked heavy, and she had eaten nothing since breakfast.

“Can we get food?” she whispered.

“Yes.”

“French fries?”

“Absolutely.”

It was such an ordinary request that my throat tightened.

Ruiz heard her and smiled faintly. “That's probably the best plan anybody has suggested in this room.”

Then she looked at me.

“Before you leave, I need to discuss where you're going tonight.”

I had been avoiding that question.

My parents lived nearly two hours away. Chloe loved them, but Richard knew their address. A hotel would be anonymous, but I didn't like the idea of checking into one without knowing whether our movements could be traced through shared accounts.

“We could stay with my brother.”

“Does Richard know where he lives?”

“Yes.”

“Does your wife?”

“Of course.”

Ruiz nodded. “That doesn't automatically make it unsafe. But given that we don't yet know who told Richard what, I'd choose somewhere he isn't likely to anticipate.”

I thought of Daniel Mercer.

Daniel had been my closest friend since college. He lived alone in a townhouse on the opposite side of the city, had met Richard only a handful of times, and had never been involved in our family gatherings.

“There's a friend.”

“Would your daughter be comfortable there?”

I looked at Chloe.

“Uncle Danny?”

She called him uncle although there was no blood relationship.

She nodded immediately.

“He has the giant TV.”

Despite myself, I smiled.

“That is apparently his primary qualification.”

Ruiz gave me several instructions before we left.
