died.”

“Yes.”

“You believed that?”

“I wanted to.”

Mercer was already heading for the door.

“Location.”

Thomas gave it.

June followed.

Mercer turned.

“No.”

“My brother is there.”

“You have never met him.”

“He’s still my brother.”

“That does not make you bulletproof.”

She stopped.

The anger left her face.

“Then take me in your car.”

Mercer stared at her.

“You stay inside unless I tell you otherwise.”

“Fine.”

He knew it was not fine.

But there was no time.

We drove west through the darkness.

June sat beside me in the back of Mercer’s SUV.

She did not speak.

The radio crackled continuously as units converged on the quarry.

Finally June whispered, “What if Grandpa knew Dad came the night before he died?”

I squeezed her hand.

“Then he probably wrote it down.”

She almost smiled.

“Yeah.”

The quarry road appeared ahead.

Deputies killed their sirens.

Vehicles moved in darkness.

At the bottom of the quarry, a blue sedan sat beneath a stand of cottonwoods.

Its driver’s door was open.

A man stood near the edge of the excavation.

Robert.

June leaned forward.

“Dad.”

Another figure was beside him.

Daniel.

Alive.

Robert had one hand gripping Daniel’s shoulder.

The other held something dark.

Mercer swore.

“Gun.”

June went white.

Deputies spread out.

A loudspeaker ordered Robert to show his hands.

He pulled Daniel closer.

June reached for the door.

Mercer locked it.

“Do not.”

“That is my father.”

“And he is holding a weapon.”

Robert shouted something from the quarry.

Mercer lowered the window slightly to hear.

The words carried through the dark.

“I only want the page.”

Daniel answered.

“I told you I don’t have it.”

Robert shoved him.

June stared.

“What page?”

Mercer looked at her.

“The missing ledger page.”

“But Dad took it.”

“Apparently not.”

June understood.

Someone else had removed the page.

Robert had found the ledger already missing the evidence he needed.

The blood in the cellar.

His jacket and wallet.

The carefully torn sheet.

Someone had been there before him.

Then Robert shouted again.

“Your mother gave it to you!”

Daniel froze.

June did too.

Rebecca.

The missing page had not merely named Daniel.

It may have documented something Rebecca possessed.

Something she gave her son.

Robert raised the gun.

June grabbed the door handle.

Mercer caught her wrist.

“Don’t.”

June stared through the windshield at the brother she had discovered existed less than two hours earlier.

Robert shouted one final demand.

Daniel slowly reached inside his jacket.

He removed an envelope.

Even from a distance, June could see the handwriting across the front.

Harold Parker’s handwriting.

The same hand that had addressed her envelope after his death.

Daniel held it up.

Robert stepped toward him.

And June whispered the realization before anyone else understood.

“Grandpa sent Daniel one too.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: Daniel Opened
