father want the trust for?”

“He believed it belonged to him.”

“And you?”

“I grew up hearing that Arthur Hayes stole our family's future.”

“Did you believe that when you stood beside me at our wedding?”

“Yes.”

“Did you believe it when Dad walked you down the aisle after your father refused to attend?”

Jessica began sobbing.

I remembered that day.

Victor had claimed he was ill.

Dad had quietly offered his arm to Jessica before the ceremony because she had been standing alone.

She had cried against his shoulder afterward.

Had she already known who he was?

Of course she had.

“I can't do this,” I said.

“Ethan, wait.”

“No.”

“There is something else.”

I nearly ended the call.

“What?”

“Your mother wasn't the only person who disappeared.”

“What does that mean?”

“My mother did too.”

I frowned.

“You told me your mother died when you were a teenager.”

“I lied.”

The symmetry was almost unbearable.

“Where is she?”

“I don't know.”

“What was her name?”

Jessica hesitated.

“Isabel.”

“And she knew Elena?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“They were sisters.”

I gripped the windowsill.

“My mother was your aunt?”

“Yes.”

That made Jessica my cousin.

But something about her hesitation bothered me.

“You said Victor was your father.”

“He raised me.”

“That's not what I asked.”

Jessica stopped crying.

For several seconds, there was nothing but the faint static of the connection.

“Jessica.”

“I don't know who my biological father was.”

Another secret.

Another door.

“What did Victor tell you?”

“That my mother betrayed him.”

“With whom?”

“He never said.”

I thought about the gray-suited man in Elena's recording.

The Morales ring.

The hidden documents.

Two women who disappeared.

Two children raised inside contradictory stories.

“Does Dad know any of this?”

“I don't know.”

“Why did you know Maya told me about Victoria?”

Jessica hesitated.

“Because I had access to your father's email.”

I felt physically ill.

“You hacked him?”

“I knew one of his passwords.”

“How?”

“He used the same password for years.”

“You've been reading his email?”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Months.”

I ended the call.

Jessica called back immediately.

I turned the phone off.

I did not sleep.

At six the next morning, I switched the phone on.

Maya called before the screen had finished loading.

“Ethan, where are you?”

“A hotel.”

“Leave.”

I stood.

“Why?”

“Someone broke into Arthur's house during the night.”

“What?”

“The police are there.”

“Was anything taken?”

“They don't know yet.”

I grabbed my coat.

“Where's Dad?”

“Still at the hospital.”

I drove there first.

Arthur was awake.

The moment he saw me, his eyes widened.

“Where were you?”

“Hotel.”

Relief passed across his face.

“Good.”

“Dad, Jessica knows.”

He closed his eyes.

“I was afraid she would.”

“She says you stole the Morales trust.”

“I protected it.”

“From Victor?”

“Yes.”

“She says her mother was Isabel Morales.”

Dad's eyes opened.

For the first time since this began, I saw genuine shock.

“Jessica told you that?”

“Yes.”

His breathing monitor quickened.

“What?”

“Dad.”

He looked toward the door.

Then back at me.

“Close it.”

I did.

He reached beneath his pillow with obvious pain and removed a small brass key.

I stared at it.

“What is that?”

“It belonged to Elena.”

“What does it open?”

“A storage locker.”

“Where?”

“Union Station.”

“What is inside?”

“Proof.”

“Of what?”

Dad held my gaze.

“That your mother survived.”

My heart seemed to stop.

“You know she's alive?”

“I believe she was alive long after the fire.”

“How long?”

“Long enough that everything you've been told about those years is about to change.”

He pressed the key into my palm.

“Take Maya.”

“Why?”

“Because if I'm right, the documents in that locker will tell you who your mother became.”

I closed my fingers around the brass key.

“And Jessica?”

Dad looked suddenly older.

“Don't tell her where you're going.”

“Why?”

“Because Victor Morales may be dead.”

He tightened his hand around mine.

“But the people who spent thirty years hunting those papers aren't.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: The Locker Held Proof My Mother Lived, but the Name on
