The latch had been loose for nearly a year, allowing a thin ribbon of cold air through the frame whenever the wind came from the north.

I had intended to fix it the previous autumn.

That morning Sarah called because Leo needed soccer cleats.

I bought the cleats instead.

Standing with Michael’s screwdriver in my hand, I remembered postponing the latch without resentment. Leo was my grandson. Children outgrew shoes. Windows waited.

But the cleats had cost eighty-six dollars.

The replacement latch cost twenty-eight.

When the new piece clicked firmly into place, I pressed my fingertips against the glass.

No draft.

I felt absurdly pleased.

Then I wondered how many small discomforts I had accepted because Sarah’s needs always arrived first.

That question sent me to the computer.

I opened my banking history and created a spreadsheet.

At first, I intended only to review the previous year.

Instead, I went back four.

The mortgage transfers were easiest: forty-eight payments of twelve hundred dollars.

Fifty-seven thousand six hundred.

The SUV payments added twenty-one thousand six hundred.

Storage had cost another seven thousand two hundred.

Their portion of my phone account approached ten thousand.

I stared at the screen.

Those were only the predictable expenses.

I began adding everything else.

Leo’s camps.

Property-tax shortages.

The water heater.

David’s registrations and business expenses.

Tires.

Appliances.

School costs.

There was a refrigerator Sarah had described as an emergency replacement. Months later, I had noticed the old refrigerator visible in a photograph from their garage.

At the time, I had decided they must have repaired it.

Another explanation.

Another excuse created on Sarah’s behalf without Sarah needing to invent it herself.

When the spreadsheet finally stopped growing, the total at the bottom was $117,430.

I checked every category again.

The number remained.

I leaned back.

Michael and I had paid less than that for our first house.

The realization did not make me angry immediately.

It made me embarrassed.

How could I have transferred that much without understanding what it amounted to?

Because I had never considered the payments together.

Each request arrived alone.

A thousand here.

Four hundred there.

A crisis on Tuesday.

An emergency on Friday.

A grandmother should help.

A mother should help.

Family helps family.

Individually, every decision had seemed defensible.

Together, they told a different story.

An email arrived from David before noon.

The subject line was formal enough to sound as if an attorney had written it, though I doubted one had.

He claimed Sarah and he had made financial decisions based on commitments I had repeatedly given them. Abruptly withdrawing assistance, he warned, could cause serious hardship. He suggested resolving the matter privately before they considered other remedies.

Other remedies.

I printed the email.

Then I printed Sarah’s message asking me to stop contacting them.

I placed both in a folder.

Michael used to say that people became more careful with lies when they knew someone was keeping records.

I wished he were there.

The doorbell rang the following morning.

Sarah stood outside alone.

She looked tired. Her hair was tied carelessly behind her head, and shadows sat beneath her eyes.

For one foolish second, hope rose inside me.

Perhaps she had come to apologize.

“Can I come in?”

I stepped aside.

Sarah entered and immediately looked toward the small bowl near the door where spare keys had once been kept.

“I still can’t believe you made me return my key.”

“That isn’t why you came.”

She sat.

“David hasn’t slept.”

“I’m sorry.”

“He’s under terrible pressure.”

“So am I.”

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

“His business needs a little more time.”

“How much?”

“What?”

“How much time?”

“Mom, businesses don’t work like that.”

“Apparently neither do mortgages.”

She rubbed her forehead.

“He has investors interested.”

“Who?”

“What difference does that make?”

“A great deal if I’m expected to finance things until they appear.”

Sarah’s posture stiffened.

“You always interrogate me.”

“I asked for a name.”

“You make us feel like children.”

“Then perhaps you should stop asking me to pay adult expenses for you.”

Silence settled over the room.

Sarah looked toward the window I had repaired.

“We can handle most of our bills.”

“Good.”

“We just need time to transition.”

“You had time before telling me to leave you alone.”

“That wasn’t about money.”

I studied her.

“No,” I said. “I’m beginning to understand that.”

I asked about the television.

Sarah’s reaction confirmed Martha had been right before she said a word.

“Martha should mind her own business.”

“You told me you couldn’t cover the mortgage.”

“The television was financed.”

“So you owe money on it.”

“There wasn’t a down payment.”

“That does not mean it cost nothing.”

“It’s ninety-five dollars a month.”

I almost laughed.

Only ninety-five.

The SUV was only four hundred fifty.

Storage was only one hundred fifty.

Their phones were only a couple hundred.

The mortgage shortage was only twelve hundred.

Everything became small when someone else paid it.

Sarah’s eyes filled.

Once, that would have ended the conversation.

I would have crossed the room.

This time I remained seated.

“Are you going to let us lose our house?”

“I’m not taking your house.”

“We can’t afford everything.”

“Then reduce your expenses.”

“David needs the SUV.”

“He needs transportation.”

“You know what I mean.”

“Sell the television.”

“He won’t.”

“Then that is a choice.”

Sarah stared at me.

“You’re enjoying this.”

The accusation struck harder than I expected.

“You think I enjoy discovering my daughter only wants distance from the parts of me that don’t pay bills?”

“You’re so calm.”

“Would shouting make this easier?”

“At least it would show you care.”

I reached for the folder on the table.

“I calculated how much I’ve given you during the last four years.”

Her expression changed.

“How much?”

“One hundred seventeen thousand four hundred thirty dollars.”

Sarah stared at me.

“You actually kept track?”

“The bank did.”

“That’s unbelievable.”

“It’s arithmetic.”

“You’re using money to control us.”

The old guilt surfaced.

This time I examined it before letting it settle.

“When did I tell you how to spend your salaries?”

She said nothing.

“When did I threaten to withdraw help unless you obeyed me?”

Still nothing.

“When did I demand repayment?”

Her face hardened.

“You always expected access.”

“To what?”

“Our decisions.
