SUV.

Leo.

The dispatcher instructed me not to approach David and asked me to meet officers at Sarah’s house.

Before leaving, I gathered the documents into an envelope.

Then I walked through the garage.

Michael’s brass level remained on the workbench.

I slipped it into my coat pocket.

I could not explain why.

Perhaps I needed something solid.

Two patrol cars were outside Sarah’s house when I arrived.

She stood in the driveway.

Behind her, the garage door was open.

The enormous television Martha had described sat in its box.

Several wrapped theater chairs stood beside it.

Sarah had told me she could barely afford groceries.

Officer Jackson introduced himself and asked for my phone.

He read David’s threat carefully.

“Has he ever harmed Leo?”

“Not that I nodded.

“That matters.”

Sarah insisted David would never hurt their son.

The officer asked where he might go.

His office?

Sarah hesitated.

David had given up his office three months earlier.

I turned toward her.

“You told me his business was about to attract investors.”

She avoided my eyes.

Friends?

Relatives?

Hotels?

She had no answer.

The SUV’s tracking subscription had been canceled because, according to Sarah, they could not afford it.

I looked at the theater chairs.

Officer Jackson asked to see the house.

Inside, unopened purchases seemed to occupy every room.

A sound system.

Decorative lamps.

A robotic vacuum.

Packages stacked near the stairs.

In the kitchen, several overdue envelopes were partially hidden beneath a bowl.

Jackson lifted one.

The mortgage was two months behind.

I stared at Sarah.

“I gave you twelve hundred dollars both months.”

“We had other expenses.”

“What expenses?”

“David’s business.”

The answer hollowed something inside me.

They had diverted the mortgage money I sent them.

“David said we’d catch up once the loan came through.”

The loan.

Against my house.

Officer Jackson asked when Sarah first learned about it.

“Yesterday.”

He waited.

“A few weeks ago,” she corrected.

Then came the questions that mattered.

Had she given David my identification?

Yes.

My driver’s license.

A property-tax statement.

A copy of the deed.

“Where did you get them?”

Sarah stared at the floor.

“My desk,” I said quietly.

She nodded.

Months earlier, while I visited my sister Joanne, Sarah had watered my plants.

She had insisted afterward on keeping my spare key in case I ever suffered an emergency.

Now I understood.

The key had not merely given my daughter emergency access.

It had given David access to everything needed to impersonate me financially.

“You sent the distance message after taking those documents.”

“David wrote most of it.”

“But you sent it.”

“He thought you were getting suspicious.”

“Of what?”

“His business.”

“What business?”

Sarah looked exhausted.

“I don’t know anymore.”

My phone rang.

David.

Officer Jackson immediately motioned for me to answer on speaker.

“Where is Leo?”

“With me.”

“Let me speak to him.”

“After we solve this.”

“There is nothing to solve.”

“The lender says you froze the application.”

“You forged my signature.”

David laughed softly.

He said we should not use dramatic language.

He claimed the money would protect the family. I owned my house outright, he said. I had equity sitting unused.

“It isn’t yours.”

“You’re leaving the house to Sarah eventually.”

The sentence chilled me.

My home had already become inheritance in their minds.

Property belonging to a woman who inconveniently remained alive.

David told me to restore the loan application and sign the final authorization.

Then he would return Leo.

Officer Jackson wrote something on his notebook and turned it toward me.

GET LOCATION.

“I’ll bring the documents,” I said. “Let me see Leo first.”

David told me to come alone to an old warehouse on Route Nine.

Sarah’s head snapped upward.

She silently formed the words.

His new office.

David had lied about having no office.

Or Sarah had.

I no longer knew which possibility was worse.

He gave me thirty minutes.

Before hanging up, he allowed Leo onto the phone.

“Grandma?”

My throat tightened.

“Are you all right?”

“I think so.”

“Did Dad hurt you?”

“No.”

David took the phone away.

The call ended.

Officer Jackson was already radioing the location.

He refused to let Sarah or me go.

We waited in her kitchen.

Forty-three minutes.

The clock above the stove became unbearable.

Finally, Jackson’s radio crackled.

The SUV had been located behind the warehouse.

Minutes later came the words I needed.

Leo was safe.

David had attempted to leave through another exit and had been detained.

At the station, Leo sat beneath a gray blanket.

When he saw us, he ran toward me.

Not Sarah.

Me.

“Grandma, I’m sorry.”

I held him.

“You have nothing to apologize for.”

“Dad said you stopped paying because you don’t love us.”

I looked over his shoulder at Sarah.

Her face crumpled.

“He said we might lose the house.”

“That is an adult problem.”

Leo lowered his voice.

“Dad kept telling me to call you and cry.”

Sarah turned away.

“He said you’d sign if I sounded scared.”

I felt sick.

Detective Elena Morales interviewed me.

She collected the messages, loan documents and evidence of forgery.

David would not leave with Leo.

What happened to Sarah, she said, depended on what investigators learned about her involvement.

After midnight, Sarah and Leo came home with me.

I allowed it because Leo needed safety.

I told Sarah plainly that my financial support would not resume.

She nodded.

“You also tell Detective Morales everything.”

“I did.”

“No.”

She looked at me.

“You told her what you thought she could prove.”

Sarah lowered her eyes.

Later, after Leo was asleep, we sat at my kitchen table.

She blamed David.

He controlled the finances.

He pressured her.

He convinced her I had agreed.

I listened.

Then I asked one question.

“If you believed I approved the loan, why did you sneak into my house for the documents?”

Sarah stopped crying.

For a moment, there was only silence.

Finally she whispered, “Because I knew you’d say no.”

There it was.

Not manipulation.

Not confusion.

Knowledge.

“You knew I hadn’t agreed.”

She nodded.

“You hoped you could make me agree afterward.”

Another nod.

“And the message asking me to disappear?”

“David thought it would buy time.”

“You keep telling me what David thought.”

“What do you want from me?”

“The part you chose.”

Sarah covered her face.

When she finally answered, her voice was barely audible.

“I chose him.”

It hurt.

But at least it was true.

At three in the morning, I gave her a blanket for the sofa.

Then I locked my bedroom door.

At seven ten, the doorbell woke me.

Detective Morales stood outside holding an evidence envelope.

Sarah appeared behind me.

The instant she saw the detective, color left her face.

Morales noticed.

Police had recovered two phones from David.

One was his.

The other was prepaid and registered under a false identity.

“Sarah,” Morales said, “do you recognize a number ending in 6118?”

My daughter gripped the back of a chair.

“Yes.”

“Whose number is it?”

Sarah looked at me.

“Mine.”

I felt the floor tilt beneath me.

Morales removed printed pages.

Messages between Sarah and David.

Six weeks of them.

She handed me the first sheet.

I read.

Sarah had told David she had obtained my deed and identification.

She joked that I still believed she kept the key for emergencies.

Another message instructed him to use the signature from my SUV documents because I would never knowingly sign the home-equity application.

I moved away when Sarah reached toward me.

There were more.

One message discussed sending the distance text after the money cleared.

Sarah believed I would be hurt.

She also believed I would eventually forgive her.

Then I reached the messages from the previous evening.

David had written that I had frozen the loan and they needed a way to make me cooperate.

Sarah had answered.

She suggested he take Leo somewhere briefly.

She told David I would agree to anything if I believed I might lose my grandson.

The paper trembled in my hands.

“Mom, I didn’t mean for him to actually scare Leo.”

I looked at my daughter.

“You gave him the idea.”

“I thought he’d just take him for an hour.”

“You gave him the idea.”

Her face collapsed.

But I no longer saw a frightened wife standing beside a manipulative husband.

I saw two people making plans.

And one of them knew me well enough to identify exactly where to place the knife.

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: When Police Found My Daughter’s Secret
