reel and a box of Christmas ornaments Sarah had taken years earlier.

Everything else went.

I felt no urge to rescue it.

When the SUV was finally sold, Elaine sent me the closing statement.

My guarantor obligation was extinguished.

I stared at the zero.

For four years, that vehicle had been another invisible cord connecting my bank account to Sarah’s decisions.

Now the cord was cut.

I printed the statement.

Then I placed it beside the spreadsheet showing $117,430.

Not as trophies.

As records.

Michael would have approved.

Sarah was released on a gray Tuesday morning.

I did not pick her up.

That had been decided with her therapist and supervising cards.

Talked about school.

She showed him photographs of her apartment only after asking whether he wanted to see them.

Leo asked if she was poor.

Sarah considered the question.

“I have enough for what I need.”

“That means yes.”

The monitor tried not to laugh.

Sarah smiled.

“I have less money than I used to pretend I had.”

That answer was better.

At the end of the visit, Leo hugged her without being asked.

In the parking lot afterward, he said, “She
