security before we left the marina.

My passport was flagged.

Officers received photographs of Mom, Jackson, and Rebecca.

For several minutes, I believed the nightmare had finally narrowed into something manageable.

Find them.

Recover the red folder.

Stop the money.

Then Dad laughed from the back of the police vehicle.

There was no humor in it.

“They aren’t taking that flight.”

Grant opened the door.

“What do you know?”

“The tickets are a distraction.”

“Your wife removed the folder from Emily’s safe-deposit box.”

“I know.”

“Where is she?”

Dad shut his eyes.

“The Greenwich house.”

The same house Jackson claimed he was buying.

The same property that had triggered the $960,000 transfer.

Dad explained that Grandfather had once owned it.

After his death, the house was sold, changed owners, and underwent extensive renovations.

Three months earlier, it returned to the market.

Rebecca wanted to buy it because she believed Grandfather had hidden original trust records somewhere inside.

Mom wanted those records destroyed.

“Then why create Willow Crest?”

“To get control of the property before your mother realized Rebecca had returned.”

“You expect me to believe you secretly purchased a house with my money to protect me?”

“I didn’t know she would take your personal savings.”

“But you knew she was using my identity.”

His silence answered.

Every explanation contained a confession.

Grant received an airport update.

Jackson had been found near international departures.

He wore Dad’s baseball cap.

He carried Mom’s phone.

No luggage.

No passport.

He had never intended to board.

Mom had sent him there to create a false location trail.

Grant put him on speaker.

“Where is your mother?”

“I don’t know.”

“You helped her enter a bank using Emily’s identification.”

“She said the folder was hers.”

“You knew she was pretending to be your sister.”

Jackson breathed heavily.

Grant explained that helping conceal evidence could deepen the charges against him.

His resistance lasted less than a minute.

“She promised me the house.”

Of course.

Mom had offered him the Greenwich property if he helped recover the folder.

There was more.

Five million dollars from an overseas account.

I stared at the phone.

“How much money does she have?”

Jackson hesitated.

“Mom said there was thirty-two million.”

The original trust had been worth around eight million sixteen years ago.

Investments and property had appreciated.

While I built my savings one careful year at a time, my family had apparently controlled an estate worth several times what I knew existed.

Half belonged to me.

“Where is Mom meeting Rebecca?”

“At the house.”

“When?”

“Tonight.”

Police were dispatched immediately.

A black SUV associated with one of Mom’s companies had already entered the Greenwich driveway.

“I’m going.”

Dad’s head snapped toward me.

“No.”

The fear in his voice was unmistakable.

“Why?”

“Because your mother has spent sixteen years protecting what she took.”

I stared at him.

“Did she hurt Rebecca?”

Dad looked at Grant.

Then nodded.

“The boat explosion wasn’t an accident.”

Grant moved closer.

Dad said Mom had paid someone to damage the fuel line.

Rebecca smelled fuel before starting the engine.

When fire erupted, she jumped into the water.

A fisherman found her alive.

She decided not to return home.

She believed whoever sabotaged the boat would try again.

Dad helped establish the story that she had died.

The closed coffin.

The funeral.

The lies.

“You watched me grieve.”

“I was trying to keep her alive.”

“Why didn’t she tell me?”

“That’s in the letter.”

Grant refused to take me to Greenwich.

I spent the next hour pacing an interview room.

Dad went into holding.

Jackson arrived in handcuffs.

He looked at the floor as officers passed me.

Then Khloe arrived with her parents.

She had changed out of her wedding clothes.

Her eyes were swollen.

She carried Jackson’s laptop.

“I found something.”

Emails.

Dozens.

Messages between Jackson and Mom.

He had helped create Willow Crest Holdings.

He knew the house would be funded with my money.

Worse, he had supplied Mom with a copy of my passport after I provided it to the villa manager for the wedding booking.

One message ended whatever lingering instinct I had to protect him.

If Emily fights the transfer, we’ll make it look like she approved everything. Dad will calm her down. He always does.

Mom replied:

She won’t fight. She never does.

I read those lines repeatedly.

That was their entire plan.

Not merely stealing.

Predicting my surrender.

Khloe sat beside me.

“Our wedding was part of this.”

Jackson had used the ceremony to manufacture urgency around the house purchase.

Mom expected me to remain quiet rather than create a scandal immediately after the wedding.

The endless expenses had served another purpose.

Keep me busy.

Keep me paying.

Keep me accustomed to saying yes.

Khloe wiped her face.

“I heard your mother talking to Jackson last night.”

“What did she say?”

“Something about your signature.”

My stomach tightened.

“Exactly what?”

“She said once they had Emily’s signature, they wouldn’t need her anymore.”

A cold sensation moved through me.

Before I could ask more, Grant called.

Police had entered the Greenwich house.

Mom’s SUV was inside.

The front door stood open.

Nobody was visible.

Then officers smelled smoke.

Documents were burning in the living-room fireplace.

They recovered fragments of financial records.

One damaged sheet appeared to come from the missing red folder.

Most of the page was gone.

Only three words remained readable beneath Grandfather’s signature.

Emily’s true parentage.

I sat down.

“What does that mean?”

“We don’t know.”

“Where’s Mom?”

“Officers found a concealed passage behind the library.”

The house dated to the 1920s.

A narrow service corridor led from the library toward a garden entrance.

Mom knew about it.

So, apparently, did Rebecca.

Police followed footprints through wet grass.

Two women appeared to have crossed the garden toward a guest cottage.

Officers surrounded it.

Mom opened the door.

Alone.

The red folder was gone.

She refused to explain where Rebecca had gone.

She said nothing about the burning documents.

The moment Grant mentioned the old boat explosion, Mom requested an attorney.

Thirty minutes later, police brought her into the station.

Her clothes were stained with mud and ash.

Handcuffs circled her wrists.

For perhaps the first time in my life, she looked small.

Then she saw me.

Her old expression returned.

“You should have listened.”

“You stole my inheritance.”

“I protected it.”

“You spent it.”

“You don’t understand what your grandfather’s money did to this family.”

“So you decided to take it?”

“I did what was necessary.”

“You tried to kill Rebecca.”

She glanced toward Grant.

“I’m not discussing that.”

I stepped closer.

“What did Grandfather mean by my true parentage?”

Something moved across her face.

Fear.

Only briefly.

But enough.

“You found that?”

“Who are my parents?”

“I raised you.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

“It is the only answer that matters.”

“No. It’s the answer you prefer.”

Her jaw tightened.

“Some truths ruin everyone they touch.”

“You should have thought about that before building my life around lies.”

An officer began leading her away.

Mom turned.

“If Rebecca contacts you, remember one thing.”

I waited.

“She abandoned you.”

The door closed behind her.

Abandoned.

The word bothered me.

She had not said Rebecca lied to me.

She had not called her dangerous.

She had said abandoned.

My phone rang.

Hidden number.

I answered.

“Emily?”

The voice had aged.

But I knew it.

“Rebecca.”

Grant moved beside me.

“Where are you?”

“Somewhere your mother cannot reach me.”

“She’s in custody.”

“That has never made me feel safe.”

“Do you have the folder?”

“Yes.”

“Give it to the police.”

“I will.”

“Then do it now.”

“First, you need to hear what she tried to destroy.”

An audio file appeared in my inbox.

Grant transferred it to her computer.

Static filled the room.

Then an elderly man spoke.

My grandfather.

His voice was weak.

Rebecca answered him.

Mom entered sometime later.

The argument concerned missing money from one of Grandfather’s companies.

He accused Mom of taking it.

Mom threatened him.

Not with police.

Not with exposure.

With me.

She would keep him from seeing Emily if he reported her.

Grandfather became furious.

“You have no right to use Emily against me.”

Mom answered immediately.

“I am her mother.”

Then Grandfather said something that divided my life into everything before that moment and everything after it.

“No. You are the woman who agreed to raise her.”

The recording continued.

Mom demanded that he stop.

Grandfather refused.

He said Emily belonged with Rebecca.

He reminded Mom that the arrangement had been temporary.

Then the recording ended.

I sat perfectly still.

Thirty-three years of memories rearranged themselves around a sentence I had never been meant to hear.

Rebecca called again.

This time her number was visible.

“Where are you?”

“At St. Catherine’s Hospital.”

The hospital where I had been born.

“Why?”

“The old maternity archive contains records your mother couldn’t destroy.”

“Tell me what they say.”

“I need to tell you in person.”

“Rebecca, are you my mother?”

Silence.

Not long.

But long enough.

When she answered, her voice broke.

“Yes.”

I shut my eyes.

The woman I had buried twelve years earlier was alive.

The woman I had called Mom for thirty-three years had apparently never given birth to me.

And the brother whose wedding had begun this disaster might not be my full brother at all.

“Who is my father?”

Rebecca inhaled slowly.

“There’s someone here who needs to answer that himself.”

A man spoke in the background.

I recognized his voice before he gave his name.

The same measured voice that had answered my fraud call.

The bank specialist who had frozen the $960,000 transfer.

Marcus Hale.

“Emily,” he said quietly.

My hand tightened around the phone.

Rebecca began crying.

And Marcus said the words that finally made me understand why one suspicious bank transaction had frightened my family enough to run.

“I’m your father.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: The Man Who Froze My Stolen Money Had Known My Name for Thirty-Four
