trusted Charles.

But he still wanted the trust.

Two competing goals.

Protect me from murder.

Steal from me anyway.

Human beings were apparently capable of building morality in very narrow corridors.

Grant asked where Charles would go next.

Jackson named three properties.

All were searched.

Empty.

Then Arthur’s DNA results arrived.

The geneticist called Grant personally.

Arthur was Rebecca’s biological father.

That confirmed the letter.

Arthur was not Robert’s biological father.

Robert stared at the report.

“What?”

His mother had apparently conceived Robert with someone else.

Another secret.

Another branch.

But there was more.

Arthur showed a close biological relationship to Jackson.

Not father.

Not grandfather.

Something closer than expected through Linda’s claimed structure.

The geneticist reconstructed possibilities.

Then requested Thomas Vale’s biological material.

Thomas had been buried.

A court order authorized exhumation.

It took two days.

Those two days felt longer than the previous week.

During them, legal teams formally challenged my trust acknowledgment.

The thirty-day clock stopped.

The forged document could no longer quietly become effective.

The $960,000 remained frozen.

Robert’s seven million transfer was reversed.

Khloe filed for annulment.

Linda was moved from the hospital to secure custody.

Jackson remained detained under federal supervision.

Rebecca began the process of restoring her legal identity.

And I went home for the first time.

My apartment looked exactly as I had left it.

That felt offensive.

Coffee cup in the sink.

Shoes near the door.

Mail on the counter.

A life waiting for the person who had inhabited it before learning almost every childhood fact was wrong.

Marcus came with me because Grant did not want me alone.

He stood awkwardly in the kitchen.

“You don’t have to looked away.

I was not ready to decide what that meant.

The Thomas Vale results arrived the following morning.

Grant called everyone back.

Thomas was Charles and Victor’s biological father.

Expected.

Thomas was also Robert’s biological father.

Rebecca covered her mouth.

Robert stared at the genetic chart.

Arthur and Thomas had been business partners.

Thomas had fathered a child with Arthur’s wife.

Robert.

Which meant Robert was biologically Charles and Victor’s half-brother.

That made Jackson Robert’s biological nephew.

It explained why DNA estimates had appeared unusually close.

But the final result was stranger.

Thomas’s DNA showed that Linda’s claim about Jackson had been incomplete.

Jackson was Charles’s son.

Yes.

But Charles had not merely had an affair with Linda.

Charles and Linda were related.

Distantly, but significantly.

Grant requested Linda’s DNA.

She resisted.

A warrant solved that.

The genealogy team traced her maternal line.

Linda’s mother had been Thomas Vale’s unacknowledged daughter from a relationship before his marriage.

Linda was Thomas Vale’s granddaughter.

Charles was her uncle.

The room became silent.

Jackson’s biological parents were uncle and niece.

Linda had hidden that relationship because it threatened far more than reputation.

It could expose the entire Vale family history and explain why Arthur had considered Charles’s influence dangerous long before Jackson was born.

Rebecca looked sick.

“Did Linda know?”

Robert whispered, “I don’t think so.”

Grant disagreed.

“We need evidence.”

They searched Charles’s records.

A letter surfaced.

Written to Linda twenty-nine years earlier.

Before Jackson’s conception.

Charles explicitly referred to Thomas as both his father and Linda’s grandfather.

Linda knew.

The relationship had been secret.

Jackson’s birth had given Charles an even stronger reason to manipulate paternity.

Victor.

Arthur.

Robert.

Anyone except himself.

Because the truth exposed what Charles had done with Linda and destroyed the respectable identity he used to move through Arthur’s businesses.

Jackson was told privately.

Grant gave him the report.

He read it without speaking.

Then folded the paper once.

“Did she know?”

“Yes.”

“My mother sound.

“All those speeches about blood.”

No one answered.

“He told me blood was everything.”

His eyes filled.

“And he spent my
