Grandpa’s business records.”

That answer turned out to be less simple than any of us expected.

At the hospital, while Melissa underwent X-rays, Larry arrived with Joan and two laptops.

The tiny memory card she had protected contained seventeen photographs.

Most showed yellowed pages, old surveys, road records, and handwritten notes from my father.

The image that mattered first was a county dedication document dated thirty-four years earlier.

Rutherford Road had indeed been dedicated for public access.

The dedication included the southern boundary of what later became Rosenberg.

Larry enlarged the signature block.

“There.”

I leaned closer.

County to a later notation.

“Because this road appears to have been partially vacated.”

“What does partially mean?”

“It means the county abandoned some portions but maybe not all.”

“Maybe?”

“The recorded description is terrible.”

Richard leaned over the table.

“Can the developer close anyway?”

Larry looked at him.

“Your sister was assaulted less than two hours ago.”

Richard stepped back.

“You’re right.”

His exhausted, she was thinking about employees she had never met.

That humbled me more than I wanted to admit.

Larry nodded.

“If we can establish the public-road status without humor.

Of course.

Daniel had spent eleven years hiding behind uncertainty.

Why stop now?

Joan continued.

“He also claims Melissa attacked him first.”

Richard swore.

Melissa simply closed her eyes.

“He’ll say anything now.”

“No,” I said. “He’ll say whatever gives him room later.”

That was worse.

Larry began scrolling through the remaining photographs.

“Let’s not give him room.”

The next eight images concerned road dedications.

The ninth concerned a survey.

The tenth was a letter from our father to a county engineer.

The eleventh stopped Larry completely.

He enlarged it.

Then enlarged it again.

“What?”

He did not answer immediately.

“What is it?”

“This appears to be a deed.”

I leaned toward the screen.

The paper was old.

Typed.

Not handwritten.

At the top was our father’s full name.

Below it was a property description.

Rosenberg.

Or part of Rosenberg.

My pulse changed.

“That can’t be right.”

“Why?”

“I bought Rosenberg from Halpern Industrial.”

Larry kept reading.

“This predates your purchase.”

“How far?”

“Seventeen years.”

I stared.

“What does it say?”

He traced a paragraph.

“It appears your father received an option to acquire a narrow strip along the southern boundary.”

“The Rutherford Road strip?”

“Possibly.”

“Did he exercise it?”

“That’s what I’m trying to nodded.

“Possible.”

Then Melissa spoke.

“Look at the next picture.”

We did.

It showed a handwritten letter folded behind the deed.

The handwriting belonged to my father.

I recognized it instantly.

Large capitals.

Uneven pressure.

He had written the date at the top.

Three months before his death.

The first line was addressed to me.

Boris—

My throat tightened.

I read silently.

If you ever decide to sell the Rosenberg Halpern never owned all of it cleanly. I kept the old purchase right alive because someday that road may matter.

I stopped.

Richard leaned closer.

“What does ‘kept the purchase right alive’ mean?”

Larry answered.

“It may mean your grandfather extended an option.”

“Can an option survive that long?”

“Usually only if properly renewed.”

“Was it?”

Joan was already checking.

“Not recorded.”

I read the last lines.

Daniel knows where the originals are.
