She had also given Melissa instructions about clothing and hair.

The ring had been part of the disguise.

I looked at my grandmother's emerald inside the evidence bag.

Suddenly its disappearance made terrible sense.

Patricia hadn't stolen something valuable.

She had stolen something recognizable.

A detail that made an impersonation convincing.

Daniel asked what happened to the cash from the first three withdrawals.

Melissa said she deposited it into an account Patricia controlled.

My husband looked at his mother.

“You had another account?”

Patricia remained silent.

Daniel requested permission to introduce financial records his office had as she read.

Finally she asked, “This account belongs to Patricia Brooks?”

Daniel confirmed it.

The account had been opened months earlier.

Deposits appeared shortly after withdrawals from our marital savings.

Amounts matched.

Dates aligned.

The pattern was so clean that I felt almost insulted.

For six months, people had treated me as if I were a criminal mastermind.

Meanwhile, the missing money had been moving into an account carrying my mother-in-law's actual name.

The judge asked cleanly.

No shouting.

No dramatic gesture.

Just nine years reduced to six words.

I remembered driving Patricia to appointments after her surgery.

Cooking Thanksgiving dinner because her back hurt.

Sleeping in an uncomfortable hospital chair the night she had chest pains while Brian was working out of state.

Picking up prescriptions.

Buying birthday presents.

Inviting her into our home.

Handing her a key.

Trusting her around everything I owned.

None of it had order.

Daniel asked how much of the sixty-one thousand remained.

Melissa said approximately twenty-seven thousand dollars was still in Patricia's account.

Thirty-four thousand had been removed.

“By whom?” the judge asked.

“Patricia.”

Patricia denied it.

Melissa reached for her phone.

“I have screen, but I could see Patricia.

Her composure finally fractured.

She rubbed her thumb repeatedly against the side of her index finger.

Brian stared at the floor.

Then he whispered, “I didn't know.”

I heard him.

I turned.

He looked at me.

For six months, I had imagined him saying something like that.

I thought I would feel vindicated.

Instead, anger rose so quickly that I had to grip my chair.

If Brian was telling the truth, then he had let his mother destroy our marriage because believing her required less courage than believing me.

If he was lying, then I had spent nine years sleeping beside someone capable of something far worse.

Either possibility ended in the same place.

The marriage was gone.

The judge returned to Mrs. Wilkes.

She wanted clarification about the people seen around the bank.

Mrs. whether Mrs. Wilkes had ever seen Brian at the bank.

She said no.

I felt him relax.

Only slightly.

Then Mrs. Wilkes added that she remembered a man waiting outside during one visit.

Brian looked up.

“What man?”

She described someone tall, older, with gray hair.

Perhaps around sixty.

Brian frowned.

Then every trace of color disappeared from his face.

“Mom.”

Patricia didn't respond.

Brian stood.

“That sounds like
