I don't have hobbies.”

She released the curtain.

“Also, there are two officers outside. Nobody is coming through that door.”

I wished I shared her confidence.

Someone had photographed me for months.

Someone knew I had seen Thomas's ledger.

Someone had sent a warning specifically using my name.

That meant the investigation was leaking.

Or I had been watched more closely than we realized.

Daniel insisted I stop going anywhere alone.

I told him I still had a job.

He told me criminals were famously respectful of work schedules.

I told him sarcasm didn't suit him.

He said it was growing on him.

The police searched my house the next morning.

Brian consented because his name remained on the lease.

I stood outside while they went room by room.

I hadn't slept there since the night Patricia searched my dresser.

When Detective Harris finally invited me inside, the place smelled wrong.

Not dirty.

Abandoned.

My coffee mug still sat in the cabinet Brian and I had argued over when we moved in because he wanted all the handles facing the same direction.

A pair of my shoes remained near the back door.

The life I had left behind had become evidence.

Harris took us upstairs.

One detective had removed the back panel from Patricia's old desk, which Brian had inherited after Thomas died.

Inside was a narrow hidden compartment.

Brian stared.

“I've had that desk for three years.”

The detective pulled out an envelope.

Inside were photographs.

Not surveillance photographs of me.

Family photographs.

Thomas.

Patricia.

Brian as a teenager.

Linda Grant.

Melissa as a child.

Then one image made Harris stop.

A man stood beside Thomas near a lake.

Victor Hale.

Older than in the newspaper clipping but unmistakable.

Between them stood a boy of perhaps nine.

On the back was a date from two years earlier.

Under it, Thomas had written:

Victor, Noah, T.

Brian read it.

“Who's Noah?”

Nobody knew.

Another photograph showed the same boy several years younger.

A third showed Linda Grant holding him.

That changed everything.

Brian looked at the detective.

“Why would Melissa's mother know Victor's kid?”

Harris corrected him.

“We don't know that he's Victor's son.”

But the photographs suggested a relationship.

Then we found something stranger.

One picture showed Linda and me.

I nearly dropped it.

“What?”

Brian moved closer.

It had been taken outside the hospital.

Linda stood near the entrance.

I was in the background.

I had no memory of meeting her.

On the back, someone had written:

Angela Brooks. Mercy General. Possible contact.

My mouth went dry.

“Contact for what?”

Harris sealed the photograph.

Daniel stared at me.

“Did Linda ever approach you?”

“Not that I remember.”

“Any patient named Hale? Kessler? Grant?”

“I've treated thousands of people.”

“Think.”

I did.

Nothing.

Then a small memory surfaced.

Two years earlier, an older man came into the emergency department after collapsing at a bus station.

He had no identification.

He refused most questions.

He gave his name as Victor Hill.

Not Hale.

Hill.

He was dehydrated, bruised, and terrified.

I had cared for him for six hours.

He kept asking whether anyone had called the police.

I told him no one would be contacted unless necessary.

Before discharge, he asked if I knew somewhere safe he could sleep.

I gave him the address of a church shelter.

My hands began shaking.

“Victor Hill.”

Daniel leaned toward me.

“What?”

“There was a patient.”

I told them.

Harris asked for the date.

I searched my memory.

Late autumn.

Cold rain.

The same year as Thomas's photograph.

Hospital records were subpoenaed within hours.

The patient's name was Victor Hill.

Age matched Victor Hale.

No ID had been scanned.

The chart noted an old abdominal surgery, a broken finger healed incorrectly, and a distinctive burn scar near the left shoulder.

Federal records for Victor Hale listed the same broken finger.

The probability of coincidence disappeared.

Victor Hale had been my patient.

That was why I had been photographed.

Thomas had apparently learned that Victor encountered me.

Maybe Linda had too.

Maybe someone feared he told me something.

He hadn't.

At least not something I understood at the time.

Then I remembered his discharge.

He had taken my hand before leaving.

“You helped me without asking who I was.”

I told him that was my job.

He smiled sadly.

“No. It isn't.”

Then he said something else.

“If a woman named Linda asks, tell her the lake is empty.”

I had forgotten entirely.

At the time, I assumed he was confused.

Now I repeated the sentence.

Harris wrote it down.

Brian whispered, “The lake.”

“What?”

He picked up one of the photographs.

Thomas and Victor stood beside water.

“That cabin belonged to Dad.”

“What cabin?”

“My father owned a fishing cabin north of Bellweather Lake.”

Harris straightened.

“Still in the family?”

Brian shook his head.

“Mom sold it after he died.”

“To whom?”

“I don't know.”

Records answered that question.

The cabin had been sold for one dollar.

Not to a stranger.

To Linda Grant.

Patricia's sister.

Two months later, Linda transferred it to a trust.

The trust still owned it.

Its beneficiary was listed only through an attorney.

The police obtained a warrant.

We were not allowed to go.

Brian argued.

Harris refused.

This time even I agreed.

If Ethan had been taken there, a crowd of emotionally involved relatives would help nobody.

The search team reached the property that evening.

The cabin was empty.

But not abandoned.

Fresh food.

Running generator.

Recent footprints.

A child's sweatshirt.

Harold identified it from a photograph.

Ethan's.

Melissa collapsed when she was told.

For the first time, investigators had physical evidence linking Ethan to a location.

But he was gone.

Someone had moved him.

The cabin held something else.

A wall map.

Several locations were marked.

First Federal.

Thomas's storage unit.

Mercy General Hospital.

My house.

And Rachel's house.

I stopped breathing when Harris showed us the photograph.

The map wasn't old.

Rachel's address had only become relevant after I moved in with her.

Someone was actively tracking me.

Harris moved Rachel and me to a hotel under police supervision.

I resisted.

Rachel packed before I finished arguing.

“I'm not dying because you have commitment issues with law-enforcement advice.”

That shut me up.

Brian went back to his house under separate protection.

Before leaving, he approached me in the courthouse parking garage.

“They found something else at the cabin.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

He held out his phone.

A photograph from police evidence.

A child's drawing.

Three stick figures.

One labeled Mom.

One labeled Me.

One labeled V.

Above them was a large red X.

Beneath the drawing Ethan had written:

Aunt Pat says V is why this happened.

I stared.

“Victor?”

Brian nodded.

“If Ethan met him—”

“He may know where Victor is.”

“And Kessler knows that.”

The missing child was no longer merely leverage.

He was a witness.

Maybe a guide.

Maybe the last person who could lead Edward Kessler to the man Thomas had protected for more than a decade.

The police began searching properties connected to Linda.

Then Harold remembered an old veterinary clinic outside town.

Linda once kept records there for a charity.

The building had been closed for five years.

Detectives went immediately.

Nobody was inside.

But they found blankets, canned food, children's books, and medication.

One prescription bottle carried Victor Hale's false name.

Victor Hill.

He had been there.

Ethan had probably been there too.

Someone was moving both of them through a chain of safe locations.

That raised a terrifying question.

Were they being held together?

Or was someone protecting them from Kessler?

Patricia finally agreed to give a full statement.

Not because of pressure from police.

Because Melissa asked her one question.

“Is Ethan alive?”

Patricia could not answer.

Melissa screamed at her.

Harold had to be removed from the room before he attacked Patricia.

Then Patricia broke.

She admitted Kessler contacted her after Linda died.

He believed Linda had inherited Thomas's knowledge of Victor's location.

Patricia insisted she didn't know where Victor was.

Kessler didn't believe her.

Then Ethan disappeared.

A message arrived.

Pay, cooperate, and produce Hale.

Patricia panicked.

She needed money Brian would not know she possessed.

Her own accounts were monitored by Kessler.

So she used ours.

My identification.

My signature.

My ring.

My life.

“Why Angela?” Detective Harris asked.

Patricia gave the answer through tears.

“Because Brian trusted me more than he trusted her.”

When I heard that later, I had to sit down.

She had chosen me because she knew exactly where my marriage was weakest.

And she had been right.

But Patricia claimed another person had arranged Ethan's movements.

Someone trying to keep him safe.

“Who?”

She refused to say at first.

Then Melissa threatened never to speak to her again.

Patricia whispered the name.

“Victor.”

The room went silent.

Victor Hale had taken Ethan.

Not as a hostage.

To protect him.

At least according to Patricia.

Kessler had attempted to abduct Ethan first.

Victor intervened.

Linda had prepared for exactly that possibility before her death.

She had left instructions.

Safe houses.

Emergency numbers.

Routes.

Victor became Ethan's protector because revealing himself was the only way to stop Kessler from taking the boy.

But every movement risked exposing them.

The sixty-one thousand dollars purchased delays, false information, and time.

Time Patricia had bought by sacrificing me.

Detective Harris asked where Victor and Ethan were now.

Patricia shook her head.

“I don't know.”

“You expect us to believe that?”

“He stopped telling me after the bank withdrawals.”

“Why?”

Her eyes moved toward me.

“Because he realized Angela was being blamed.”

I stared at her.

Victor had known.

Somewhere in hiding, the man I had once treated anonymously had understood that Patricia's plan was destroying me.

Harris asked whether Victor sent the anonymous copy of my driver's license and practice signatures.

Patricia nodded.

“He wanted Angela to have proof.”

The envelope.

The handwriting.

It had been Victor's attempt to pull me toward the truth.

Then Harris's phone rang.

He listened without speaking.

His face tightened.

“What?”

He looked at me.

“A vehicle connected to Kessler was found near Bellweather Lake.”

Brian stood.

“Is he there?”

“No.”

“Ethan?”

“No.”

Harris paused.

“But there's blood inside the vehicle.”

Melissa began crying.

The detective raised a hand.

“We don't know whose.”

Then another officer entered carrying a printed photograph from a traffic camera.

The image showed Kessler's truck entering the lake road.

Three people were visible inside.

Kessler driving.

A boy in the passenger seat.

And an older man seated behind him.

Even through the grainy image, Brian recognized Victor Hale.

So did I.

And for the first time, we knew Ethan was no longer hidden from Edward Kessler.

He was riding beside him.

<a
