She just wanted to organize it."

That was true.

"Did you decide about another meeting?"

"Not yet."

"Then don't."

"I won't."

A few days later, Caitlin arrived at Mom's house without warning.

She carried two coffees and anger.

I recognized both.

"What's wrong?"

"Dad wants to give Emily part of everything."

I let her inside.

"Did he tell you?"

"Nora did."

"Sit."

"I don't want to sit."

"Then pace."

She did.

"I know how this sounds."

"Say it anyway."

"It feels like we're being replaced."

There it was.

Not greed.

Fear.

"By Emily?"

"Not exactly."

"Then by what?"

"By Dad's guilt."

I listened.

"He spent our whole lives being our father. Now he finds out he failed someone else and suddenly everything has to be equal."

"That feels like it makes your relationship smaller."

"Yes."

Her eyes filled.

"I know that's selfish."

"It's human."

"But Emily didn't do anything."

"No."

"I don't blame her."

"Good."

"I blame Dad for making me feel like I'm competing with somebody who never asked to compete."

That was precise.

"Have you told him?"

"No."

"Why?"

"Because then he'll feel guilty."

I almost laughed.

"Caitlin, your father is currently operating a guilt surplus."

She smiled unwillingly.

"Tell him."

"What if he thinks I'm spoiled?"

"Then he can learn something about you too."

She sat.

"I don't want his money."

"Then what do you want?"

"My dad."

The answer came instantly.

"I want to know he isn't going to spend the rest of his life trying to become Emily's father and forget he already is ours."

I reached for her hand.

"Tell him exactly that."

She did.

Not in front of me.

That mattered.

Their relationship had to exist without my mediation.

That evening Joe texted.

Caitlin told me what she's afraid of. I needed to hear it.

I replied only:

Good.

Three days later, Emily contacted me again.

Can I see the maple?

The request surprised me.

I called instead of texting.

"Why?"

"Mom told me about the box."

"Recently?"

"I've known about it for years."

"Of course."

"I'm sorry."

"No. I'm becoming less surprised by the number of people who knew."

"Margaret said it was insurance."

"It was."

"I remember the tree."

"You were photographed under it."

"Mom showed me the picture."

"I found a copy."

Emily was quiet.

"I want to see the place where all of this sat for twenty-seven years."

"You're welcome here."

"Will Joe be there?"

"No."

"Your daughters?"

"Only if you ask."

"I'd rather meet the tree first."

The phrase made me smile.

We arranged Saturday afternoon.

Clare did not come.

Emily drove alone.

I recognized her car pulling into Mom's driveway.

When she stepped out, seeing her at Birchwood Lane created a strange fold in time.

The little girl from the photograph returned as a twenty-seven-year-old woman.

I met her on the porch.

For several seconds we simply looked at each other.

Then Emily said, "You really do sound like Margaret."

"So everyone keeps telling me."

"That's unfortunate."

I laughed.

"So did she."

We walked into the backyard.

Emily stopped when she saw the maple.

"It's huge."

"It wasn't when you were here."

"I remember it being huge."

"You were five."

"Everything was huge."

She approached the trunk.

Her fingers touched the bark.

"Where?"

I pointed.

"Right there."

The soil had already settled.

Emily crouched.

"Mom said Margaret planted it after she buried the papers."

"That's what I understand."

"She said Margaret wanted something she could see from the kitchen."

"A marker."

"Yes."

Emily stood.

"Did you hate her when you found out?"

"Mom?"

"Yes."

"For moments."

"Do you now?"

"No."

"Why?"

"Because anger isn't the same as hate."

She considered that.

"Do you forgive her?"

"I'm getting closer."

Emily looked upward into the branches.

"I forgave her years ago."

"For what?"

"For disappearing."

I turned.

"What?"

"When Mom stopped visiting, Margaret stopped writing to me too."

"Because Clare asked her to?"

"Partly."

"But you were a child."

"Exactly."

Her voice tightened.

"I thought I had done something wrong."

My chest hurt.

"Emily."

"I know now."

"Mom should have found a way to explain."

"She did later."

"When?"

"When I was twenty-one."

Another piece.

"She wrote to you?"

"Yes."

"Do you still have it?"

Emily nodded.

Then she reached into her bag.

"I brought a copy."

She handed me two pages.

Mom's handwriting.

The letter apologized for disappearing from Emily's childhood.

It said adults sometimes created silence believing children would not notice the shape of the missing thing.

Children always noticed.

I had to stop reading.

Mom wrote that she had cared for Emily but had allowed conflict with Clare to make her retreat completely.

She regretted it.

She did not ask Emily to forgive her.

She simply wanted Emily to know that the disappearance had never been the child's fault.

I lowered the pages.

"She never showed me this."

"It was mine."

Emily said it gently.

She was right.

Not every truth belonged to me.

I handed the copy back.

"Thank you for letting me read it."

We sat beneath the maple.

For nearly an hour we talked about Mom.

Not Joe.

Margaret.

Her terrible cookies when she forgot the timer.

Her insistence that weeds should be pulled by the root.

The way she pretended not to cry at sentimental movies.

Emily remembered things about my mother from a period of her life I had never seen.

At first that hurt.

Then something unexpected happened.

It gave Mom back to me in pieces.

A younger Margaret.

A woman capable of tenderness toward a child she could not publicly claim.

A woman making mistakes.

Trying.

Failing.

Trying differently.

Before Emily left, she touched the tree again.

"Sarah?"

"Yes?"

"I think I'm going to meet Nora and Caitlin."

My heartbeat changed.

"Are you sure?"

"No."

I smiled.

"That's becoming our family motto."

Emily smiled too.

"But I want to try."

"Then I'll tell them."

"No."

She shook her head.

"I want to tell them myself."

That was the right answer.

As she walked toward her car, I realized the red maple had changed meaning again.

It had begun as Mom's hiding place.

Then evidence.

Then a monument to silence.

Now, for the first time, someone who had been hidden by that silence had stood beneath it and chosen to step toward the people on the other side.

Click here to continue reading: PART 15: Nora and Caitlin Finally Met the
