College. Emily's divorce. Caitlin's classes. My job."

"And then?"

"Family resemblance."

I tensed.

"Who started that?"

"Emily."

"Okay."

"She says Caitlin has Dad's eyebrows."

"She's right."

"And apparently I make the same face Dad makes when somebody says something stupid."

"You absolutely do."

"Thanks."

"You're welcome."

Nora laughed.

Then her voice softened.

"Mom, it was strange."

"How?"

"I kept looking at her and thinking I should feel something enormous."

"But?"

"Mostly she felt like a woman I had just met."

"That's probably healthy."

"Then every once in a while she'd do something Dad does."

"And?"

"It would hit me."

I understood.

Biology could appear in gestures before emotion caught up.

"Don't force anything."

"We aren't."

"Good."

"Emily said the same thing."

After we hung up, I tried to work on Mom's estate paperwork.

Forty minutes later, Caitlin called.

She was crying.

"What happened?"

"I screwed up."

My stomach tightened.

"What did you do?"

"I showed Emily a picture."

"What picture?"

"Christmas."

"Which Christmas?"

"Three years ago."

I remembered.

Everyone at our house.

Joe wearing the ridiculous sweater Nora bought him.

Mom pretending to hate it.

Caitlin perched on the arm of his chair.

"What happened?"

"Emily asked what holidays were like."

"And you showed her."

"I wasn't thinking."

"What did she do?"

"Nothing at first."

"Caitlin."

"She just stared."

"At Joe?"

"At all of us."

I closed my eyes.

A family photograph could be harmless to us.

To Emily it was a record of exclusion.

"Then what?"

"She asked how many Christmases Dad spent with us."

"All of them."

"I said that."

My chest tightened.

"She asked whether he ever seemed sad."

I understood the trap.

"What did you say?"

"The truth."

"Which was?"

"No."

Caitlin began crying harder.

"I told her he loved Christmas."

"Oh, sweetheart."

"I made it sound like he never thought about her."

"According to what he's told us, often he didn't."

"I know."

"But Emily asked for truth."

"She left."

"Angry?"

"I don't know."

"Did she tell you not to contact her?"

"No."

"Then give her time."

"I wanted this to go well."

"That's not something you can control."

"I know."

She caught herself.

"Sorry."

"You're allowed to know things."

That earned a watery laugh.

Afterward, I considered calling Emily.

I didn't.

That restraint felt important.

Two hours later, she called me.

"I owe Caitlin an apology."

"You don't owe anyone an immediate reaction."

"I didn't say goodbye."

"You were hurt."

"Still rude."

I smiled faintly.

"You sound like Margaret."

"God help me."

"What happened?"

"Caitlin showed me the picture."

"She told me."

"I know she wasn't trying to hurt me."

"No."

"But I saw Joe."

Emily's voice changed.

"He looked happy."

I said nothing.

"I know that's irrational."

"It isn't."

"I don't want him to have been miserable."

"No."

"But part of me wanted evidence that somewhere inside those twenty-seven years he felt the absence."

"He told you he thought about you."

"Sometimes."

"Yes."

"That's the problem."

I understood.

Emily had spent her life with an unanswered father-shaped question.

Joe had sometimes gone years without considering the daughter-shaped possibility.

Those experiences could never be made equal.

"Do you hate Nora and Caitlin for having him?"

"No."

The answer was immediate.

"That's what makes it worse."

"Why?"

"They're nice."

I laughed softly.

"Very inconsiderate of them."

Emily laughed too, then sniffed.

"If they were awful, jealousy would be easier."

"Probably."

"I looked at Caitlin and thought, she got to climb all over him in Christmas pictures while I didn't even know if he was my father."

"That hurts."

"Yes."

"You're allowed to say that."

"But it's not Caitlin's fault."

"No."

"Or Nora's."

"No."

"Or yours."

"No."

"Mom says it's not even useful to think about the childhood I would have had with Joe because there's no evidence it would have been better."

"Clare is right."

"I had a good childhood."

"That doesn't eliminate curiosity."

"I know."

I waited.

Emily sighed.

"I think I want to see him again."

"Joe?"

"Yes."

"Because of the photograph?"

"Because I have something I need to ask."

"What?"

She hesitated.

"Whether he wishes he'd known me."

The question sounded simple.

It wasn't.

"You need that from him."

"Yes."

"Then ask."

"I’m afraid he'll say whatever he thinks I want."

"So tell him that."

"I will."

The next meeting was between Emily and Joe alone.

That was another boundary.

Another step.

I did not ask Joe afterward what happened.

He did not volunteer.

Emily called me the following evening.

"I asked."

"And?"

"He said yes."

I waited.

"But?"

"He said wishing is cheap."

That sounded like Joe.

"What else?"

"He said if he claims he wishes he'd known me, he also has to admit he had chances to find out and chose not to."

My throat tightened.

"How did that feel?"

"Awful."

"Anything else?"

"Better."

Both.

Again.

"Did you believe him?"

"Yes."

That mattered more than whether I did.

Emily continued.

"He asked whether I wanted to know about Nora and Caitlin when they were little."

"What did you say?"

"Not yet."

"Good."

"You don't mind?"

"Why would I?"

"I don't know."

"Those memories aren't going anywhere."

She was quiet.

Then she said, "I apologized to Caitlin."

"How did she respond?"

"She apologized to me."

"For the photograph?"

"Yes."

"Neither of you really did anything wrong."

"I know."

"Sometimes apologies aren't admissions of guilt."

"What are they?"

"Recognition that something hurt."

Emily considered that.

"I like that."

The next week brought something almost resembling calm.

Not normal.

Normal was gone.

But calm.

I began sorting Mom's belongings in earnest.

Clothes for donation.

Documents for shredding.

Furniture Nora and Caitlin wanted.

Boxes Emily might eventually choose from if she wanted something that reminded her of Margaret.

I asked first.

She requested only one thing.

A pressed maple leaf Mom had once placed in a book.

I found several.

I chose none for her.

Instead I photographed them and let Emily choose.

Small decisions.

But they mattered.

Then Daniel came to the house.

He looked uncomfortable before I even opened the door fully.

"What happened?"

"I need to tell you something."

My stomach dropped.

"Please don't say those words anymore."

He almost smiled.

"Fair."

I let him in.

Daniel sat at Mom's kitchen table.

"I've been thinking about what you said."

"About giving Joe Clare's number?"

"About everybody knowing pieces except you."

I crossed my arms.

"What piece do you have?"

"Something Margaret asked me to do."

"When?"

"About six months ago."

My pulse quickened.

"What?"

Daniel reached into his jacket.

He placed a small brass key on the table.

I recognized it.

Mom's bank.

Safe-deposit boxes used keys exactly like that.

"Margaret gave me this."

"Why?"

"She said if she died before she could finish telling you, I should give it to you."

Anger flared.

"You waited until now?"

"I thought the box under the maple was what she meant."

"Then why keep the key?"

"Because she specifically told me not to give it to Joe."

I stared at him.

"Where's the box?"

"First National."

"Whose name?"

"Margaret's."

"Can I access it?"

"You're executor."

My fingers closed around the key.

"What did she say was inside?"

Daniel looked genuinely frightened.

"Only that it was the last thing she never wanted Joe to control."

The phrase chilled me.

"Evidence?"

"I don't know."

"Money?"

"I don't know."

"Something about Clare?"

"I don't know."

I laughed bitterly.

"At least somebody is finally using that phrase correctly."

The bank opened at nine the next morning.

I arrived at eight fifty-two.

By nine twenty, an employee had verified my executor documents and escorted me into the vault.

The safe-deposit box was longer than I expected.

She placed it in a private viewing room and left.

I inserted Mom's key.

The lock turned.

Inside was no money.

No jewelry.

No police report.

There was a thick sealed envelope.

Across the front, Mom had written:

FOR SARAH ONLY.

IF JOE IS WITH YOU, ASK HIM TO LEAVE BEFORE OPENING.

I sat down.

My hands had begun trembling.

I broke the seal.

Inside was a notarized document.

A letter.

And a second envelope addressed to Clare.

The notarized page was dated six months earlier.

I read the first paragraph.

Then the second.

By the third, I understood why Mom had kept this separate from everything beneath the maple.

It wasn't evidence about Joe's past.

It was a decision about Mom's estate.

And it involved Emily.

<a
