response into Phoenix for unauthorized hosts.”

“What kind of response?”

“A challenge file.”

“Meaning?”

“If the archive is connected without EP-001, it reveals one folder.”

“Which folder?”

She opened it.

The name appeared:

YOU FOUND THE WRONG PHOENIX.

I almost smiled.

Inside was a single executable-looking file that was actually harmless.

And a text document.

Priya read it aloud.

If you are reading this without Ethan, then you are the reason I hid it.

Michael Parker.

Then another line.

The real archive is not on this drive.

Silence.

I stared at Priya.

“What does that mean?”

She looked as confused as I felt.

“The drive we opened may be an index.”

“Then where is the real archive?”

Nobody knew.

I thought about my father’s habits.

False bottoms.

Hidden compartments.

Layers inside layers.

The solid-state drive had contained evidence.

Enough to expose Alden and Calder.

But maybe Phoenix itself—the complete model, the original source, the unaltered telemetry—was elsewhere.

Then I remembered EP-001.

Not the USB key hidden inside it.

The machine itself.

My first machine.

A toy CNC plotter my father built by hand.

I had assumed the USB device was the key.

Maybe that was only half the design.

I called the officer guarding my house.

“Go to my attic.”

Samuel looked at me.

“What are you thinking?”

“My father said Phoenix key is Ethan’s first machine.”

“You found the USB.”

“No.”

I stood.

“We found what he wanted a thief to think was the key.”

The officer reached the attic.

I directed him to the plotter.

“Turn it over.”

Four screws.

Wooden base.

USB compartment.

Then I remembered something else.

The plotter had two stepper motors.

But my father had once told me it used three.

At twelve, I had assumed he misspoke.

“Remove the left motor cover.”

The officer did.

Silence.

Then:

“There’s something inside.”

“What?”

“A memory module.”

My heart began pounding.

“Photograph it. Don’t remove it.”

The image arrived.

Industrial flash storage.

Seventeen years old.

Wrapped in shielding.

Handwritten label:

PHOENIX MASTER.

Samuel exhaled.

My father had split everything.

Evidence on one drive.

Master model inside the first machine he ever built for me.

Access key hidden separately.

A thief needed all three.

Mercer had stolen only one.

And by connecting it without me, he had announced his location through the hardware fingerprint.

My phone rang.

Mercer again.

This time his calm was gone.

“What did your father do?”

I looked at Samuel.

Then Laura.

Then Evelyn.

“He made sure the machine knew who touched it.”

Mercer swore.

Behind his voice, I heard another man shouting.

Older.

Angry.

Elias.

Mercer had gone to him.

The two men who had been manipulating everyone else were now in the same room.

And neither yet understood that my father had just turned their stolen Phoenix drive into a beacon.

Click here to continue reading: PART 13: Phoenix Led Us to Mercer and Elias, but the Men Fighting Over My Father’s Archive Were Protecting a Secret About Samuel Instead

The county technology center went into lockdown before we reached the parking lot.
