Four years after his death, my mind could still occasionally transform such sounds into my husband moving through the kitchen.

Then consciousness returned.

George was gone.

Liam was furious.

And my daughter and I had discovered money leaving an account I had trusted my son to use only when he genuinely needed help.

I went downstairs.

Maya’s spreadsheet remained open on the laptop.

I made tea and sat in front of it.

The transfer dates bothered me more than the amounts.

Five thousand dollars shortly before a venue payment.

Three thousand near a florist invoice.

Twenty-five hundred surrounded by other wedding expenses.

Smaller transfers hidden among legitimate charges.

If I had noticed one by itself, Liam could have said it was connected to the wedding.

Maybe some were.

That was precisely the problem.

I had created such broad permission for legitimate spending that questionable spending could disappear inside it.

I searched my email.

A message from Liam nearly a year earlier appeared.

He and Jessica had thanked me for my generous offer and promised to keep the wedding reasonable.

Reasonable.

I searched Jessica’s messages next.

The change was gradual enough that I had never noticed it.

At first she asked.

Would this venue fit the budget?

Would I mind looking at flowers?

Was a particular photographer too expensive?

Later, the questions became statements.

The florist needs this deposit.

The hotel requires your card.

The caterer changed the estimate.

Eventually even the courtesy disappeared.

Receipts arrived for decisions already made.

I had mistaken the evolution for wedding stress.

Now it looked like
