24 – The Case Moved Forward Without Promising Complete Answers, and I Finally Learned That Justice Could Exist Without Giving George Back

Seven months after I stepped off the train in Boston, Susan’s case remained unresolved.

That sentence would once have felt unbearable.

I had imagined truth as a door.

Open it, and everything would be visible.

Instead truth turned out to be a long hallway.

Some doors opened.

Some remained locked.

Some led to rooms that contained only more questions.

Susan’s financial charges were among the strongest.

The forged check.

Altered note.

Unauthorized account attempts.

Photographed identification.

Victor Crane’s records.

Practice signatures.

Vendor refund redirection.

Those events left documents.

Numbers.

Timestamps.

Financial systems remembered.

Human memory did not always.

The medication case was harder.

The tea contained two substances George had explicitly refused.

His blood contained those substances plus the substituted anti-anxiety medication.

Susan admitted giving him medication but claimed consent.

George’s recordings contradicted her.

Jessica described concealment.

The emergency call contained lies.

The missing hour contained evidence removal and replacement purchases.

Dr. Cho concluded the substances likely contributed materially to George’s acute collapse.

But George survived seven more weeks.

His cancer continued progressing.

His final decline involved multiple medical problems.

No responsible expert would say Susan caused his death with the certainty a homicide prosecution would require.

At first that distinction felt like someone taking George away from me a second time.

Then I understood.

George himself had asked for it.

If they cannot know, believe that too.

So I did.

Or tried.

Susan eventually admitted through a negotiated statement that she gave George medication not prescribed to him.

She maintained she expected it to calm him, not seriously harm him.

She admitted concealing the administration after he collapsed because she feared blame.

She disputed parts of Jessica’s account.

She denied intending to alter George’s long-term medication.

She denied knowing the substituted pill was in his regimen.

Prosecutors disputed several of those claims.

Defense attorneys challenged others.

The court would decide what could be proved.

I no longer needed to decide everything first.

Daniel’s case remained separate.

He acknowledged authorizing Susan to handle Eleanor’s pharmacy substitution without understanding what she intended to do.

He denied any intention to harm George.

Nothing investigators found established that he wanted George injured.

But his omissions had mattered.

He had withheld his role from George.

Then from me.

Then from investigators until evidence forced disclosure.

Jessica asked me once whether I trusted Daniel.

“No.”

She looked surprised.

“Do you think he’s dangerous?”

“No.”

“Then why not?”

“Trust seemed to free her from something.

Perhaps she had spent her entire life believing people had to be categorized as loyal or disloyal.

Good or bad.

Family or enemy.

Susan’s world had little room between.

Reality had plenty.

Liam continued therapy.

He never told me what they discussed unless he wanted to.

I stopped asking.

His repayments continued.

Sometimes eight hundred.

Sometimes five.

One month, nothing.

He called four days before the due entered.

Probably.

“I’m sorry,” she said.

“I know.”

“I’m not asking you to forgive me.”

“I emergency.

That was harder than it sounds.

Parents are trained by years of scraped knees and fevers to respond.

Adult pain requires different instincts.

Sometimes help.

Sometimes advice.

Sometimes simply allowing another person to hurt without rushing to make the feeling disappear.

Maya reminded me of that when I tried to invite Liam
