Chloe’s hand stopped above the wooden dinosaur puzzle spread across the carpet. Across from her, five-year-old Liam held the missing tail piece between two fingers. Neither child asked what the sound meant. They had lived in the house long enough to recognize the difference between an ordinary door closing and their father arriving angry.

Liam slowly lowered the puzzle piece. “Is Dad mad again?”

Chloe glanced toward the bedroom door. She was nine, which adults usually treated as an age too young to understand serious things. Yet she understood the rhythm of these nights with uncomfortable precision. First came the heavy entrance. Then their father’s low voice. After that came their mother trying to keep her own voice level. If David Miller had been drinking, the quiet stage rarely lasted. “Finish the dinosaur,” Chloe whispered.

A second voice drifted up from downstairs. Chloe recognized it as belonging to Vince, one of David’s friends. Vince had visited several times before. He smoked cigarettes outside the garage, laughed at jokes nobody else found funny, and seemed to make David drink faster whenever the two men were together. Chloe wished immediately that he had not come.

Downstairs, Sarah said something too softly for Chloe to understand. David answered more clearly. His voice carried through the stairwell. He told her not to walk away from him.

A chair scraped across the kitchen floor.

Liam’s puzzle piece slipped from his fingers. Chloe caught it before it struck the hardwood beyond the edge of the rug. She placed it silently on the carpet, stood, and reached for her brother. “Closet.”

He stared at her for half a second, then obeyed.

That frightened Chloe almost as much as the sounds downstairs. Months earlier, Liam would have argued. He would have asked whether he could bring his stuffed dog, whether Mom was coming, whether they were playing hide-and-seek. Now he understood that when Chloe said closet in that particular voice, there was no game involved.

She opened the closet and shifted two plastic storage bins. Winter coats hung above a pile of folded blankets, filling the narrow space with the faint lavender smell of the sachets Sarah tucked among the clothes. Chloe retrieved Liam’s stuffed dog from his bed and pushed it into his arms. “Stay behind the boxes.”

“You too.”

“I need to see Mom.”

Liam caught her sleeve. “Don’t.”

Something struck the kitchen wall downstairs.

Then Sarah’s voice rose sharply. “David, stop.”

Chloe felt Liam’s grip tighten. Stop was a word that meant something different in their house than it did at school. At school, teachers said stop when children ran in the hallway or pushed in line. At home, Sarah sometimes said it with both hands raised and her back against a counter.

“I’ll come back,” Chloe promised.

She carefully loosened Liam’s fingers and left him inside the closet. She did not close the door completely. Then she crossed the bedroom on bare feet and moved into the hallway. At the stairs, she dropped to her knees and leaned toward the railing.

The kitchen was visible through the wooden balusters.

David stood near the entrance wearing a rain-soaked jacket. His dark hair was stuck to his forehead. Vince lingered several feet behind him. Sarah was on the opposite side of the kitchen table, positioned so that the table stood between her and the men.

Chloe stared at her mother.

Sarah had always seemed strong to her. She carried grocery bags two at a time. She could open jars David struggled with. She removed spiders without making a fuss, repaired scraped knees, and knew from one touch whether Liam was warm because he had been running or because he was getting sick.

Tonight, she seemed physically smaller.

“The children are upstairs,” Sarah said.

David struck the table with his palm. “I know where they are.”

Chloe flinched backward.

Sarah did not.

Then Chloe noticed something beside the pantry.

A blue suitcase.

She recognized it from a trip to Aunt Rebecca’s house two summers earlier. It was positioned partly behind Sarah, as though she had hoped David would not see it.

He followed her glance.

“What’s that?”

Sarah’s expression changed.

David crossed the kitchen and seized the suitcase. “You’re leaving?”

“Not like this.”

“With my kids?”

“David, keep your voice down.”

He threw the suitcase.

It struck a cabinet. The zipper split, and clothes scattered across the floor. Chloe saw Liam’s pajamas, her red sweater, two pairs of jeans, socks, toiletries, and the little plastic bag containing her toothbrush.

For several seconds, she forgot about hiding.

Mom had packed for them.

Small things from recent weeks suddenly arranged themselves into a pattern. Sarah had removed birth certificates and other papers from the desk. She had begun keeping cash in an old flour container. She had once asked Chloe, casually, whether she still remembered Aunt Rebecca’s telephone number.

Chloe had sensed that her mother was preparing for something.

She had not realized they were supposed to leave tonight.

David stared at the children’s clothes spread across the floor. “You planned this behind my back.”

Sarah kept her hands at her sides. “We can discuss it tomorrow.”

“You were going to take them.”

“They’re our children, David. They aren’t belongings.”

Vince shifted near the doorway. “Dave, maybe—”

“Stay out of it.”

Sarah moved toward the kitchen exit.

David stepped directly into her path.

“You’re drunk,” she said. “Move.”

“No.”

“Let me pass.”

“We’re finishing this.”

Chloe retreated from the railing.

Her heart was beating so hard that she could hear it.

Then she remembered a conversation with Sarah from months earlier. They had been driving home from school on a perfectly ordinary afternoon. No shouting. No broken furniture. Sarah had suddenly asked Chloe whether she knew how to call 911.

Chloe had laughed and said of course.

Sarah had made her repeat their address.

Then she had explained something else: an old cellphone could still be useful for an emergency call even without regular service. If Chloe ever felt truly frightened and Sarah could not help her, she was to call.

At the time, Chloe had imagined smoke pouring from the kitchen or a stranger breaking a window.

She understood now that Sarah had been preparing her for something else.

Chloe ran back to the bedroom.

Liam was still hidden exactly where she had left him.

“Mom?” he whispered.

“She’s downstairs.”

“Is she okay?”

Chloe could not answer that without lying.

She grabbed the old phone charging beside Sarah’s bed. Her fingers shook while she touched the screen. She entered the first digit incorrectly, erased it, and tried again.

Nine.

One.

One.

The call connected.

For an instant, fear of her father became stronger than everything else. Chloe almost hung up. She imagined David finding the phone, discovering what she had done, and turning that terrible quiet voice toward her.

Then something shattered downstairs.

Sarah cried out.

Chloe pressed the phone against her ear.

An emergency dispatcher answered.

Chloe opened her mouth, but no sound came.

The woman asked whether anyone was there.

“Please,” Chloe finally whispered. “Please come.”

The dispatcher’s tone remained calm. She asked Chloe to explain what was happening.

Chloe looked at Liam. He was sitting behind the storage bins with the stuffed dog pressed against his chest.

“They’re hurting my mom again.”

There was a brief pause. Chloe heard typing.

The dispatcher asked her name.

“Chloe.”

Her age.

“Nine.”

Whether she was somewhere safe.

“I don’t know.”

Who was hurting Sarah.

Chloe lowered her voice. “My dad.”

She hesitated before adding that Vince was there too.

The dispatcher asked where Chloe was. Upstairs. Where was Sarah? Downstairs. Was anyone else with Chloe? Her little brother.

“What’s his name?”

“Liam.”

The woman told her to remain with him and asked for their address.

Sarah had made Chloe practice it until she could say it without thinking. Now Chloe recited every number and the street name as carefully as if she were answering a question in class.

“Help is coming,” the dispatcher told her.

“How long?”

“They’re already on their way.”

Another thud sounded downstairs.

Liam whimpered.

Chloe covered his mouth gently and shook her head. His eyes filled with tears, but he stayed quiet.

The dispatcher heard the noise and asked what had happened.

“I don’t know.”

“Stay upstairs, Chloe.”

“But my mom—”

“You’re helping her by staying safe with Liam. Keep talking to me.”

Chloe wanted to believe that.

Then Sarah screamed.

It lasted perhaps a second.

Chloe stood immediately.

“I have to go down.”

The dispatcher’s voice became firmer. Officers were nearly there. Chloe was not to approach the adults.

Before Chloe could respond, David shouted from below.

“Where are the kids?”

Every muscle in her body locked.

Footsteps struck the staircase.

Liam stared at her.

Chloe shoved the phone against her chest to hide its glow and pushed her brother deeper into the closet. “Move back.”

“What about you?”

“I’m coming.”

They climbed behind the boxes together. Chloe pulled the closet door almost shut and reduced the phone’s volume until the dispatcher’s voice was barely more than a breath.

“Are you hiding now?”

“Yes.”

“Good. Stay there.”

The footsteps reached the upper hallway.

“Chloe?”

David.

Liam began trembling so hard that his shoulder knocked softly against Chloe’s. She wrapped both arms around him.

“Don’t answer,” she whispered into his hair.

The bedroom door opened.

A narrow band of hallway light appeared beneath the closet door.

David entered.

Chloe could hear him breathing.

He walked toward the bed. The mattress shifted as he apparently looked underneath it.

“Chloe.”

His voice had changed.

He sounded almost gentle.

That frightened her more.

“Come out.”

Chloe pressed one hand over Liam’s mouth.

A dresser drawer opened.

Then another.

“I know you’re here.”

Chloe stared at the closet handle.

The dispatcher was saying something she could barely hear.

David’s footsteps approached.

One.

Another.

Then they stopped directly outside the closet.

The handle turned.

Liam buried his face against Chloe.

The door opened the width of a finger.

“David!” Vince shouted from downstairs.

The handle stopped.

“What?”

“Get down here.”

David stood motionless.

Chloe could see part of his boot through the gap.

Finally he swore and released the handle. His footsteps crossed the bedroom. The door slammed behind him.

Neither child moved.

The dispatcher spoke softly through the phone, telling Chloe to remain hidden.

“Are they coming?” Chloe whispered.

“Yes.”

“Really?”

“Yes.”

Chloe put her forehead against Liam’s.

Rain continued striking the roof.

Then, beneath it, she heard another sound.

A siren.

At first she wondered whether she had imagined it. Then a second siren joined the first.

They grew louder.

Closer.

Chloe’s chest tightened with something she was almost afraid to recognize as relief.

Downstairs, the voices stopped.

The sirens abruptly fell silent outside the house.

David spoke first.

“What did you do?”

Sarah did not answer.

“Sarah.”

Chloe closed her eyes.

“What did you do?”

Red and blue light began flashing through the thin gap beneath the bedroom curtains.

For the first time that night, Chloe understood that somebody outside the Miller house knew what was happening inside it.

And downstairs, judging from the sudden silence, David understood exactly the same thing.

Click here to continue reading: PART 2: Police Found Sarah on the Kitchen Floor, but Getting Chloe and Liam Out Required More Than Breaking Through the Locked Front Door

Rain had been tapping against Chloe Miller’s bedroom window for nearly an hour when the front door downstairs slammed hard enough to shake the picture frames along the hallway wall. …

[1

post-2692","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-feel-one-story
["GET
