Rain struck her uniform as she crossed toward the Miller house. Two additional units arrived behind her, their emergency lights painting the wet pavement in alternating bursts. Dispatch had given them the essentials during the drive: nine-year-old caller, possible domestic assault, injured mother downstairs, two children concealed upstairs, two adult men inside.

Jessica had handled enough domestic calls to know that ordinary-looking houses meant nothing.

The Miller home had a glowing porch lamp, a child’s bicycle beside the garage, and chalk drawings dissolving slowly in the rain. From the street, it looked like a place where the worst emergency ought to be a leaking roof.

Jessica raised a hand. Officers separated around the property.

“Unit Twelve on scene.”

Dispatch confirmed that Chloe had remained connected long enough to report the children were hiding upstairs. Show me your hands!”

No response.

A lamp was broken beside the sofa. A fresh dent marked the living-room wall. Near the kitchen entrance lay several pieces of children’s clothing beside a suitcase with a torn zipper.

Jessica registered every detail without stopping.

Then she heard movement in the kitchen.

Sarah Miller was on the floor.

She was conscious, but only barely steady enough to brace herself against a cabinet. Her hair had fallen across her face, and one cheek was already swelling.

David stood several feet away.

Vince was near the hallway.

For a fraction of a second, everyone simply looked at everyone else.

Then Jessica saw David’s hands.

Closed fists.

“Police.
