rewarded it.

Pride kept it running.

Control prevented anyone from stopping it.

That afternoon, investigators obtained the original insurance application.

My signature was forged.

Mark was sole beneficiary.

The policy had increased through riders and supplemental coverage.

Maximum potential benefit under certain circumstances: eight million dollars.

But the most disturbing document was not the policy.

It was a letter Mark had written to Voss shortly after Maya turned eleven.

He asked how long someone with Maya’s mutation could remain healthy without developing disease.

Voss had responded that no ethical physician could predict an individual lifespan from the mutation Maya’s surgery with a police escort.

Not to stay.

To collect clothes, school things, photographs, and documents.

The house smelled stale.

Maya did not come.

I was grateful.

Her cereal bowl was still in the dishwasher.

The basil plant was still dead.

The cracked paver remained near the mailbox.

Everything looked exactly like the home I had left.

Only I had changed enough to see it.

Mark’s office door stood open.

Police had removed computers, boxes, files, medication, and the safe.

The room looked smaller empty.

I stood inside.

For eighteen years, a locked door had been enough to keep me from asking what my husband considered private.

On the bookshelf, one thin red folder remained wedged behind a row of old property manuals.

I almost ignored it.

Then I saw the edge.

Red.

Robert’s binder had been red.

Valerie had used red folders too.

I called Hollis before touching anything.

An officer photographed it and removed the folder.

Inside were copies investigators had apparently missed because they were hidden behind the shelf backing.

Laboratory reports.

Insurance in the photograph was another Daniel Mercer.

A former coworker of Mark’s.

Alive.

And according to employment records, still working in the same city.

When carefully lifted an unopened envelope from the bottom.

My name was written across the front.

The postmark was five years old.

Mark had intercepted it.

Hollis opened it only after documenting everything.

The first line was enough.

Claire, if you are reading this, Mark has finally run out of ways to stop you from learning what happened to
