He asked where it came from, who controlled the security system, whether the footage had been altered, and how Norah had accessed it. I answered what I could. The camera belonged to me. It recorded motion inside the carriage house and automatically saved clips to cloud storage. I had installed it after package thefts in the neighborhood. Norah knew the password because I sometimes let her watch recordings of Jasper dragging socks around the house while we were away. The judge looked toward my parents’ attorney. He looked deeply unhappy.

Mom whispered something to Dad.

He leaned toward her sharply.

Ava stared at the floor.

The judge allowed us to proceed provisionally while the recording’s status was considered.

Norah handed me the tablet.

Her fingers were cold.

“You’re okay,” I whispered.

She nodded, though she looked frightened.

I hated that she was in the room. fear or pride swallowed it.

“You’re destroying this family over a house.”

“No.”

She frowned.

“You already destroyed it.”

Her mouth opened.

I continued before she could speak.

“You could have helped Ava rent somewhere.”

“We tried.”

“You could have sold something.”

“That’s absurd.”

“You could have told her no.”

Mom became silent.

That was the center of not tell Ava to build her own life.

“You chose the easiest person to sacrifice.”

Mom grabbed my forearm.

“Don’t walk away from me.”

I believed that.

Three days later, someone knocked on the carriage-house door.

A woman in a gray suit stood on my porch.

She introduced herself as Rachel Ellis, an attorney referred through a legal-aid coordinator who had learned about the hearing.

I almost told her the case was finished.

Then she opened her folder.

Property was complicated, but the essential point was not.

Under specified conditions, the carriage house and part of the surrounding land were intended to pass separately.

To me.

“They knew?”

Rachel did not answer immediately.

Instead, she produced an old letter in Grandma Evelyn’s handwriting.

It was addressed to Dad.

Grandma instructed him that if I ever needed the carriage house, I was to have it. More importantly, she wrote that if I invested my own money making it livable, I should understand that I was building something intended for my own future.

My vision blurred.

Dad had watched the contractors.

Mom had praised the windows.

They had both told me how fortunate I was to be allowed to live there.

All while Grandma had left instructions pointing in an entirely different direction.

Rachel asked whether my parents had ever shown me those records.

“No.”

“Mentioned them?”

“No.”

Her expression became serious.

“Then your eviction hearing may be the smallest part of this.”

Before I could ask what that meant, my phone rang.

Dad.

I stared at his name.

Rachel advised me not to answer yet.

The call stopped.

Started again.

Stopped.

Then a message arrived.

DON’T SIGN ANYTHING WITH THAT LAWYER.

My heartbeat accelerated.

Another followed.

YOUR GRANDMOTHER’S PAPERS ARE COMPLICATED.

I looked at Rachel.

“How does he know you’re here?”

“I haven’t contacted him.”

A third message appeared.

CALL ME BEFORE YOU DO SOMETHING THAT CANNOT BE UNDONE.

Rachel read it.

“That does not sound like someone who thinks the documents are meaningless.”

I looked through the window.

Across the yard, a curtain in my parents’ house shifted.

Someone had been watching.

Rachel turned another page.

A notarized document.

My name appeared near the top.

The date was eleven months before Grandma Evelyn died.

I read the first paragraph.

Then the second.

By the third, I could barely breathe.

Rachel spoke carefully.

“There are indications your grandmother had already created enforceable rights for you.”

I looked at the house around me.

“You mean they didn’t only try to evict me from something Grandma intended me to receive.”

Rachel nodded.

“I’m concerned they may have spent six years preventing you from learning that it was already meant to become yours.”

Movement across the yard caught my attention.

Dad emerged from the main house.

He was carrying Grandma Evelyn’s old metal lockbox.

I had not seen it since her death.

He looked directly toward my window.

Then he put the box into his car.

Rachel stood.

“Where is he going?”

I watched Dad reverse out of the driveway.

For the first time, I understood that Ava’s desire for the carriage house might not have started the lawsuit.

It might only have provided the excuse.

Dad drove away carrying the one box that might explain why my family had needed me gone before I learned what Grandma had left behind.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: We Followed Dad’s Lockbox, but Mom’s Confession Revealed He Had Buried Far More Than a Property Document

The judge did not immediately allow the video to play.
