signature doesn’t match the samples we have from her.”

Ava frowned.

“Then who signed it?”

Patricia retrieved another file.

Inside were old family documents Grandma had provided during estate planning.

Tax forms.

Property papers.

A loan application.

Rachel placed two signatures side by side.

My forged signature.

And Dad’s handwriting from an old application.

My stomach tightened.

“No.”

The similarities were subtle.

Not enough for me while Linda handled others.”

I sat back.

It should not have surprised me.

It did.

Perhaps because Mom had become the visible forger.

The camera had caught her.

The fake license showed her photograph.

Dad had been able to stand behind her wrongdoing and describe it as hers.

But the records suggested he had not merely instructed.

He had participated directly.

Patricia then opened Grandma’s video statement.

This was different from the voice recording beneath my floor.

Grandma sat at a table in Patricia’s former office wearing a blue cardigan I remembered.

Seeing her almost hurt more than hearing her.

She looked thin.

But alert.

Patricia appeared on camera asking questions.

Grandma gave the date.

Her address.

The names of her children and grandchildren.

She explained her assets accurately.

Then Patricia asked why she was changing the estate plan.

Grandma looked straight toward the camera.

“Because Robert believes responsibility for family property gives him ownership of everybody’s choices.”

I swallowed.

She explained the unauthorized borrowing.

The hidden debt.

Her concern that Dad would pressure Mom.

Her concern that Ava would accept whatever arrangement benefited her most.

Then she mentioned me.

“I am not leaving Megan more because she is down.

Grandma said I had spent years mistaking self-sufficiency for obligation.

She worried the family had learned to rely on that.

I stared at the screen.

Even now, Grandma was forcing me to see something uncomfortable.

I had helped create the pattern too.

Not the fraud.

Not the lies.

But the endless availability.

I had rarely said no until saying no threatened the entire system.

Rachel paused the video.

“Are you saint.

Not as a villain.

She documented Claire’s instability when I was young and her later recovery.

Then she said Claire had repeatedly asked whether contacting me would help me or only relieve Claire’s guilt.

That detail mattered.

Claire had stayed away partly because Dad manipulated her.

But not only because of Dad.

She had been afraid.

Ashamed.

Uncertain.

Human.

Grandma refused to simplify her.

Near the end, Patricia asked whether Grandma feared
