backward.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“No, his wife—”

She stopped herself.

I waited.

Ashley looked at Dale.

“You said she was older.”

I raised one eyebrow.

“How much older?”

Ashley flushed.

“This isn't funny.”

“I agree.”

“You said she lived in Florida.”

Dale's jaw tightened.

“Ashley.”

“You said you were separated.”

“I can onto the counter.

“Enough.”

The sound made Ashley jump.

It did not frighten me.

That surprised me.

Perhaps fear depends on uncertainty, and Dale had already answered the question that had frightened me most.

He was not the man I thought he was.

Once I understood that, his anger lost much of its power.

Ashley looked at him.

“How long have you been married?”

He remained silent.

She turned to me.

“Twenty-six years.”

Her face is.”

Her voice shook.

“You brought me here.”

That was true.

His own arrogance had delivered him to the one salon chair where every lie could meet at once.

I touched the folder.

“What did you need notarized?”

Dale's hand shot toward it.

I moved it out of reach.

“Carol.”

“What?”

“Give me the folder.”

“You brought it to my place of business.”

“I thought—”

“I know what you thought.”

His eyes narrowed.

Behind the curtain, Patrice remained silent.

I opened the folder.

Dale stepped forward.

“Don't.”

That single word told me to continue.

The first page concerned a transfer.

The second related to refinancing.

The third carried my full legal name.

Carol Ann Harris.

I read more slowly.

Then I reached the signature.

For a moment, I genuinely could not understand what I was seeing.

It looked like mine.

The slope of the C.

The long stroke beneath Harris.

The slight backward angle.

But something was wrong.

I had signed my name tens of thousands of times.

Checks.

School papers.

Client receipts.

Tax forms.

Birthday cards.

Notary logs.

I knew the movement my hand made.

This signature had been produced by someone who knew what mine looked like but not how I wrote it.

Then I recognized another habit.

A tiny upward hook on the final stroke.

Dale did that.

He had done it on every Christmas card, invoice, and check I had seen for twenty-six years.

I looked up.

“You signed my name.”

Ashley stared at him.

“What?”

Dale lowered his voice.

“Carol, don't make accusations you don't understand.”

I tapped the signature.

“I understand my own name.”

“It was authorization.”

“From whom?”

“You.”

“When?”

“We discussed this.”

“No.”

“We did.”

“Then tell me where.”

He hesitated.

That was enough.

Ashley moved closer.

“What is she talking about?”

Dale turned.

“Stay out of it.”

“You brought me into it.”

“Ashley.”

“No.”

Her voice was stronger now.

“What are those papers?”

I turned the folder toward her.

“Apparently Dale wants me responsible for business obligations.”

She scanned the pages.

“How much?”

“I don't know yet.”

I looked at Dale.

“Do you?”

He said nothing.

I began reading the amounts aloud.

Equipment loans.

Taxes.

Guarantees.

Other obligations.

Together they approached four hundred thousand dollars.

Ashley went pale.

“Four hundred?”

Her eyes moved to Dale.

“The boat account.”

Dale's face changed.

There it was.

The first real fear.

I looked at Ashley.

“What about the boat account?”

She covered her mouth.

“He said there was around four hundred thousand in it.”

I turned toward Dale.

“Interesting coincidence.”

“It's not the same money.”

“Then explain it.”

“You wouldn't understand.”

I laughed once.

For months, that sentence had apparently served as the foundation of his entire plan.

I wouldn't understand.

Ashley wouldn't understand.

His wife was clueless.

His girlfriend was useful.

Women could be given different stories because neither would ever compare them.

Except now we were standing in the same room.

Ashley stared at him.

“You told me that account was for us.”

Dale said nothing.

“The boat. The condo. You said—”

“Ashley, stop talking.”

Her expression hardened.

“Why?”

“Because you don't know what you're talking about.”

She gave a short, bitter laugh.

“Apparently nobody does except you.”

I closed the folder.

Dale reached for it.

I pulled it back.

His voice dropped.

“Carol.”

Behind the curtain, I heard Patrice move.

Dale heard it too.

His head turned.

“Who else is here?”

Patrice stepped into view.

She carried herself without drama, which made Dale's reaction more satisfying than any theatrical entrance could have.

His face went pale.

I said, “This is Patrice Greene.”

He stared.

Patrice nodded politely.

“Mr. Harris.”

“What is she doing here?”

“She represents me.”

Dale looked at me.

“You brought a lawyer?”

“No.”

I placed my hand on the folder.

“You brought the documents.”

Patrice stepped closer.

“Carol, keep the original.”

Dale looked at her.

“You can't take that.”

Patrice's expression did not change.

“You should speak to your own attorney before making declarations about what my client can or cannot retain.”

“My client?”

Dale looked at me again.

“We're married.”

The sentence landed strangely.

Once, it would have carried weight.

Duty.

History.

Love.

Now it sounded like a technicality he hoped would protect him.

“Yes,” I said. “We are.”

His shoulders loosened slightly.

Then I added, “That's why forging my signature was such an interesting choice.”

Ashley began crying.

Quietly.

I looked at her.

She was staring at Dale, not me.

“Did you ever mean any of it?”

Dale rubbed his jaw.

“Ashley, this isn't—”

“Answer me.”

He did not.

She nodded slowly.

“I understand.”

For the first time, I felt something toward her that was not resentment.

Pity would be too simple.

Recognition, perhaps.

Ashley had hurt me without knowing who I was.

Dale had deceived both of us while knowing exactly who we were.

She wiped her face.

“Miss C, I'm sorry.”

I studied her.

“I believe you.”

She looked surprised.

“I swear I didn't know.”

“I know.”

“How?”

I walked to my station.

Beneath the towels was the black notebook.

I brought it to the counter and opened it.

Thursday after Thursday.

Dates.

Amounts.

Statements.

Trips.

Promises.

The condo.

The boat.

The ring.

The hidden accounts.

The divorce.

The paperwork.

Every fragment Ashley had handed me without realizing what she was giving away.

Her eyes widened.

“You wrote everything down?”

“Yes.”

She looked at Dale.

“You told me she never paid attention.”

I closed the notebook.

“She did.”

Dale's face reddened.

“You've been setting me up.”

“No.”

I slid the folder toward Patrice.

“You've been setting me up.”

He stared at me.

I continued.

“You told me the company was failing.”

“It has problems.”

“You asked me to cut expenses.”

“We needed to.”

“I cleaned offices on Saturdays.”

“Carol—”

“I postponed a doctor's appointment because you said we couldn't afford the deductible.”

His eyes dropped.

“And while I was doing that, you were buying jewelry and hotel rooms.”

Ashley flinched.

I did not look at her.

“This isn't about her anymore.”

Dale looked almost relieved.

He should not have been.

“This is about what you've done with our money and my name.”

Patrice opened the folder.

Dale reached toward my arm.

I stepped back.

“Don't touch me.”

His hand fell.

“Carol, please.”

I could not remember the last time he had used that word with me.

Please.

For years, Dale had asked by telling.

Sign this.

Call them.

Cancel that.

We can't afford it.

Don't worry about the business.

I've got it handled.

Now he needed something he could not take without my cooperation.

“We can work this out,” he said.

“No.”

“Twenty-six years, Carol.”

“I remember all of them.”

“Then don't throw everything away over one mistake.”

Ashley made a sound somewhere between a laugh and a sob.

I looked at the forged signature.

“One mistake?”

Dale's jaw worked.

“The paperwork got complicated.”

“You signed my name.”

“I was trying to protect the business.”

“From whom?”

He had no answer.

“From me?”

“No.”

“Then why put the debt in my name?”

“It isn't like that.”

Patrice spoke for the first time in several minutes.

“Then I'm sure your attorney will have no difficulty explaining the structure.”

Dale glared at her.

“This is between my wife and me.”

“No,” I said.

He turned.

“It stopped being only between us when you started putting my identity on financial documents.”

The words changed something.

In him.

In me.

Perhaps even in Ashley.

Dale looked toward the door.

Ashley opened her purse and removed the velvet ring box.

She held it for several seconds.

Then she placed it on the counter.

“I don't want it.”

“Ashley.”

“No.”

“Don't do this.”

She stared at him.

“You were going to marry me?”

Dale said nothing.

“You weren't, were you?”

Still nothing.

She pushed the ring farther away.

“I hope whatever you were trying to buy was worth it.”

Then she walked out.

Dale started after her.

At the door, he stopped and looked back at me.

For a fraction of a second, I saw another man.

The Dale who danced badly in our first apartment.

The Dale who cried when our daughter was born.

The Dale who stood beside me at Daniel's funeral.

I wanted desperately to believe that man had existed.

Perhaps he had.

People do not need to be monsters every day to destroy someone.

They only need to make enough selfish choices and become comfortable living with them.

Dale looked at the folder in Patrice's hands.

“Carol, don't do anything stupid.”

I almost smiled.

For years, he had apparently built his plans around the assumption that I was stupid.

Now caution had become stupidity because it no longer served him.

“I'll call you,” he said.

“Call my attorney.”

His face tightened.

Then he left.

The door shut.

I stood behind the counter listening to his truck start.

Patrice waited until it disappeared.

Then she locked the salon door.

“You all right?”

“No.”

“Good answer.”

I sat in Ashley's empty chair.

The ring box remained on the counter.

“Was any of that useful?”

Patrice looked at
