numbers?”

“I remember one because he repeated it.”

“What?”

“Two-one-seven.”

I looked at Patrice.

Safe-deposit box 217.

“When was that?”

“Before he left again.”

My pulse accelerated.

“Anything else?”

“He said, ‘Put the original there.’”

Patrice and I stared at each other.

The Mercer originals.

Box 217.

The same box we had just opened.

The plan to preserve certain documents while hiding them may have begun the night Daniel died.

“Rebecca, did he mention Ray?”

“I think so.”

“What did he say?”

“Something like, ‘Ray, listen to me.’”

There it was.

Dale had called Ray while Daniel was still in distress.

Then possibly again from our garage after dropping Rebecca home.

The old phone records would have to determine whether the times fit.

Detective Briggs arrived twenty minutes later.

Rebecca agreed to speak formally with him and Sergeant Chen.

I told her I would come.

“No.”

The answer surprised me.

“Rebecca?”

“I need to do this without you.”

“Why?”

“Because I've spent fourteen years deciding what to say based on whether it would hurt you.”

I closed my eyes.

She was right.

“I'll be nearby.”

“I know.”

“And Rebecca?”

“Yes?”

“I love you.”

She cried again.

“I love you too.”

When the call ended, I sat motionless.

Patrice waited.

Then she said, “That was important.”

“She lied to me.”

“Yes.”

“I understand why.”

“Yes.”

“I’m still angry.”

“You can be both.”

I looked at Rebecca’s statement on the table.

Dale had preserved it for fourteen years.

Not because he loved our daughter.

Because it could be useful.

That realization made me colder than anything involving money.

By afternoon, investigators had compared Rebecca’s account with archived phone records.

A call from Dale’s cell to Ray at 11:51.

Another at 12:02.

Then a third at 12:28.

That third call originated after the emergency call.

It lasted seven minutes.

Dale had likely returned toward home or another location by then.

But one new detail appeared.

At 12:34, Ray called Atlantic Community Bank’s after-hours commercial line.

The same bank holding box 217.

“Why would a lawyer call a bank after midnight?” I asked.

Briggs answered, “We don't know.”

The bank no longer had call recordings.

But archived access logs revealed something stranger.

Ray entered the bank’s main branch at 8:03 the next morning.

The safe-deposit vault opened at 8:11.

Box 217 was accessed.

Daniel had been dead only hours.

By the time I learned my brother was gone, Dale and Ray were already securing documents in a box registered under my name.

“What was on the flash drive?” I asked.

Nobody knew.

But the drive might explain why Dale feared Daniel’s records so much.

That evening, Patrice received a secure message from Dale’s attorney.

They wanted another settlement discussion.

Patrice declined.

Five minutes later, another message arrived.

This one included an attachment.

A photograph.

A small black flash drive lying on a desk.

Beside it was a handwritten note.

Dale will surrender the original Daniel drive as part of a global civil resolution.

I stared at it.

“He still has it.”

Patrice nodded.

“Or wants us to believe he does.”

“What if he destroys it?”

“If it's evidence relevant to an investigation, that would create additional problems for him.”

“He's already removed files.”

“Yes.”

I looked at the photograph.

Daniel had given that drive to my seventeen-year-old daughter with instructions to give it to me.

Fourteen years later, my husband was offering to sell it back.

“No settlement.”

Patrice nodded.

“I assumed.”

“Send the photograph to Briggs.”

“I will.”

The next morning, Briggs called before seven.

They had obtained a warrant based on accumulated evidence.

Dale’s office.

His business premises.

Certain storage locations.

Electronic devices.

And the safe-deposit evidence.

I was not allowed near the search.

I waited at Patrice’s office.

At eleven thirty, Briggs called.

“We found a drive.”

My heart stopped.

“Is it Daniel’s?”

“We
