Its paint had chipped around the corners. Inside, a tiny ballerina turned to a tune Mom used to hum while folding laundry.

Harold opened the lid.

The melody reached us through the camera microphone.

For a second, his hands stopped.

Then he tore the ballerina from its base.

Dad flinched.

“Harold, don’t.”

The man eleven hours away could not hear him.

Harold produced a screwdriver and forced it beneath the wooden platform.

I pressed the microphone icon.

“Harold.”

He froze.

Slowly, he looked toward my camera.

“You’re being recorded,” I said. “Police are coming.”

His face changed very little.

That was somehow worse.

Dad moved close to my phone.

“Why are you doing this?”

Harold looked directly into the camera.

“You should have stayed dead until I finished.”

Dad recoiled.

“What?”

“You heard me, Frank.”

“You warned me about Vanessa this morning.”

“I called because I needed to know where you were.”

The betrayal settled visibly across Dad’s face.

Harold turned back to the music box.

The wooden base cracked.

A brass key dropped onto my bed.

So did a folded note.

Harold grabbed both.

“Leave them there,” I said.

He slipped them into his coat.

Then he looked at the camera one last time.

“Your mother should have kept quiet.”

Dad’s voice became raw.

“What did you do to Eleanor?”

Harold ripped the camera from the wall.

The picture vanished.

Sheriff Mercer radioed officers responding near my house.

Four minutes.

Harold needed less.

I switched to the backyard camera.

His black pickup sat behind my fence with the engine running.

Dad called my neighbor Frank and told him only to watch, not interfere.

Moments later Harold appeared.

The blue music box was tucked beneath his arm.

Sirens reached the camera microphone.

He stopped.

Looked toward the street.

Then threw the music box into my trash bin and climbed the fence.

For ninety seconds we saw nothing.

Then Sheriff Mercer’s radio came alive.

An officer had located him.

There was shouting.

A struggle.

Then the unmistakable click of handcuffs.

The brass key and note were recovered from Harold’s coat.

Dad lowered himself into a chair.

Harold had been at his wedding.

At my baptism.

At birthdays and Christmas dinners.

He had stood beside Dad at Mom’s funeral.

Sheriff Mercer studied him for a moment before asking, “Did Harold ever have access to your financial information?”

Dad nodded slowly.

“He helped with taxes after Eleanor died.”

“Did he know Vanessa once held your power of attorney?”

“He witnessed the original.”

The sheriff retrieved the forged document.

At the bottom was the notarization.

Harold Pike.

Dad stared at his friend’s signature.

“He helped her.”

Sheriff Mercer nodded.

“Without that notarization, the forged document would have been much harder to use.”

A search of Grant’s phone made the connection worse.

Seventeen calls between Grant and Harold during the previous week.

A five-thousand-dollar payment two days before the attempted transfer.

And a ten-thousand-dollar payment from Grant to Harold the morning after Mom died.

Dad looked at that one for a long time.

“What did he buy for ten thousand dollars?”

Sheriff Mercer’s expression gave me no comfort.

“That is one of the questions we need answered.”

The note recovered from Harold’s coat contained only a bank name, the number 317, and my full legal name.

Dad understood first.

“Safe-deposit box.”

The bank was closed.

Sheriff Mercer arranged for an officer to remain there until morning.

Harold requested an attorney and stopped talking.

Vanessa blamed Grant.

Grant blamed Vanessa.

Neither explained the money paid to Harold.

At nine the next morning, Dad and I entered First County Bank with Sheriff Mercer.

The manager led us downstairs.

Box 317 was registered jointly to Eleanor Cole and Natalie Cole.

Mom had added my name six months before her death.

I inserted the brass key.

The manager used the bank key.

The lock opened.

Inside were copies of Michael Turner’s investigation.

Bank records proving the theft.

Photographs connecting Grant, Vanessa, and Harold.

Then I found a funeral-home receipt.

Harold’s funeral home.

Ten thousand dollars in cash.

The morning after Mom died.

Beside the amount were two words.

Immediate cremation.

Dad sat down.

“Harold talked me out of an autopsy.”

Sheriff Mercer looked at the receipt.

“An autopsy could have included toxicology.”

The next envelope contained Mom’s pharmacy records.

Four days before her death, the dosage of one medication had been changed.

Not doubled.

Not tripled.

Multiplied six times beyond her doctor’s instruction.

The request had been submitted under Dad’s name.

Harold had witnessed it.

Dad’s hands began trembling.

I found a letter beneath those records.

It was addressed to Dad and me.

Mom wrote that Harold’s chest pains were false.

Grant had paid him to lure Dad away.

Vanessa and Grant planned to confront her about the evidence.

She had made multiple copies.

Everything necessary to prove the financial theft was in Box 317.

Then came the final paragraph.

Mom said there was another truth.

A truth she had hidden for decades.

It explained why Harold protected Grant even when Grant’s behavior became indefensible.

Dad read the paragraph twice.

“What truth?”

There was one final envelope.

PERSONAL — FOR FRANK.

Dad opened it.

A laboratory report slid out.

Private DNA testing.

He read the result.

His face emptied.

“Dad?”

He passed it to me.

The probability was 99.98 percent.

Two names appeared.

Grant Cole.

Harold Pike.

Relationship:

Biological father.

I looked at Dad.

He had raised Grant for more than forty years.

Harold had watched him do it.

Dad stood without speaking and walked to the far wall.

I wanted to follow him.

I didn’t.

After several minutes, he turned.

“He’s still my son.”

I had not expected that.

Dad wiped his face.

“I taught him to ride a bicycle. Sat beside him when his appendix burst. Paid his college tuition. Biology doesn’t erase those years.”

Then his expression hardened.

“But what he did to Eleanor might.”

Sheriff Mercer called the jail.

When Harold’s attorney learned what had been found in Box 317, Harold suddenly wanted to talk.

We returned to the sheriff’s office.

Dad and I watched from behind observation glass.

Harold admitted the affair with Mom had occurred during a period when my parents were separated.

He had suspected Grant was his.

He became certain only one month before Mom died.

Grant had discovered old letters between Harold and Mom.

Then he used the possibility of his paternity to blackmail Harold.

Almost ninety thousand dollars over three years.

Harold admitted helping with the forged financial document.

He admitted helping Grant manipulate Dad’s finances.

Then Sheriff Mercer asked about Mom’s medication.

Harold denied responsibility.

She showed him his signature.

His story changed.

He said they had only wanted Mom confused enough to sign financial papers.

Dad turned away.

Sheriff Mercer asked what happened on the night Mom died.

Harold admitted faking chest pains.

He admitted allowing Dad to believe he had entered St. Matthew’s emergency department.

He had slipped through another exit.

Then Grant called him.

Mom had collapsed.

Harold went to the house.

“Was Eleanor alive?” Sheriff Mercer asked.

Harold hesitated.

“Yes.”

Dad closed his eyes.

“Was she conscious?”

“Yes.”

“Speaking?”

“Yes.”

“What did she say?”

Harold stared at his hands.

“She kept asking for Natalie.”

My throat closed.

Sheriff Mercer placed the transcript of Mom’s recording before him.

“What happened during the twenty-three minutes before anyone called for an ambulance?”

Harold refused to answer.

Dad could not stand it.

Before I stopped him, he entered the interview room.

Harold looked up.

Dad placed the DNA report on the table.

“Was he worth it?”

Harold’s composure broke.

Dad leaned toward him.

“I raised your son while you stood beside me pretending to be my friend.”

“Frank—”

“You helped him steal from us.”

“I never meant—”

“You helped keep my wife from receiving medical care.”

Harold shook his head.

Dad struck the table.

“Tell me what happened during those twenty-three minutes.”

Harold began crying.

“I can’t.”

“Why?”

“Because Grant will destroy everything.”

Dad stared at him.

“Everything is already destroyed.”

Deputies escorted Dad out.

Harold’s lawyer ended the interview.

But as Sheriff Mercer reached the door, Harold shouted after her.

“Eleanor recorded more than you know.”

That sentence sent investigators back to Box 317.

An evidence technician examined the metal container under a bright lamp.

Beneath the handle was a thin black object held by adhesive.

Another flash drive.

Three video files appeared.

The first showed Grant stealing cash.

The second showed Vanessa photographing Dad’s banking information.

The third carried the date of Mom’s death.

Sheriff Mercer played it.

The camera had been hidden in Mom’s kitchen.

Grant stood beside the table with financial documents.

Vanessa blocked the doorway.

Mom sat in a chair.

Her breathing was already labored.

Grant demanded her signature.

Mom refused.

Vanessa held the medication bottle.

Mom tried to stand.

Her legs failed.

She collapsed.

Neither of them called for help.

Grant searched drawers.

Vanessa cried.

Then someone knocked at the back door.

Harold entered carrying a medical bag.

Dad gripped my hand.

On the video, Mom looked at him.

“Frank trusts you.”

Harold knelt beside her.

Mom asked him to call me.

He refused.

Grant told him Mom knew everything.

Harold checked her pulse.

“She needs an ambulance.”

Grant and Vanessa argued that paramedics would discover the medication.

Then Grant crouched beside Harold.

“Can you make it look like her heart stopped naturally?”

Harold stared at him.

“You’re asking me to kill your mother.”

Grant’s answer was quiet.

“I’m asking you to protect your son.”

Harold opened his medical bag.

He removed a vial.

Then a syringe.

Dad let go of my hand.

Mom saw what Harold was holding.

She reached weakly toward the hidden camera.

My name left her lips.

Harold filled the syringe.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Grant locked the kitchen door.

Then Harold looked down at my mother and said that once he gave her the injection, she would never expose them.

The needle moved toward her arm.

Sheriff Mercer stopped the video.

Nobody objected.

We already knew what came next.

But knowing was no longer enough.

Now we could prove it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: The
