do?”

“District clerk.”

“For Mallory?”

“She works for the court.”

“That means yes.”

Mercer looked at him.

“It means she manages filings, scheduling, records, sealed orders, administrative access.”

Everything Turner had described.

Documents disappearing.

Warrants delayed.

Information leaking before police acted.

A district clerk could see almost all of it.

Mercer called Amanda immediately.

No answer.

Again.

No answer.

Then she sent deputies to Amanda’s house and the courthouse.

Dad said, “You knew Mallory personally?”

“I know every judge in the county.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

Mercer’s jaw tightened.

“Our families knew each other.”

“How well?”

“Well enough.”

The answer bothered me.

“Did Amanda?”

Mercer looked toward the floor.

“Amanda worked on Mallory’s first prosecutor campaign.”

There it was.

Not proof.

But history.

Mercer asked the technician to trace the trust-login attempt more precisely.

It came from a terminal inside the clerk’s secured records office.

Badge entry showed Amanda entered the office at 7:12 p.m.

No recorded exit.

A courthouse camera showed her carrying a laptop bag.

Then the cameras covering the clerk’s hallway went offline.

Mercer swore quietly.

“She knows those cameras.”

Dad said, “So does Mallory.”

“Yes.”

A deputy reached Amanda’s home.

Empty.

Her car was gone.

Mercer asked for statewide alerts.

She did not ask anyone else to make the calls.

She made them herself.

That impressed me more than pretending the connection meant nothing would have.

Wren remained in the room.

Mercer turned on him next.

“How could Amanda have reserve-account credentials?”

“She could not.”

“Someone tried.”

“That does not mean the credentials came from me.”

“Who had copies of Eleanor’s trust papers?”

Wren thought.

“My office.”

“Who subpoenaed or requested them?”

“Nobody.”

“Who could have seen sealed probate material?”

His expression changed.

“The court.”

Dad leaned forward.

“What sealed material?”

After Mom died, Wren filed a protective notice regarding certain trust interests.

Not ownership transfers.

A legal preservation document.

He had sought to prevent unauthorized disposition while determining whether fraud had occurred.

The filing was sealed.

Amanda, as district clerk, could access it.

That filing referenced the national trust institution.

Not the credentials.

But enough to know the reserve existed.

Mercer asked how someone obtained valid credentials.

Wren shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

I did.

Or thought I might.

“Mom.”

Everyone looked at me.

“If she kept copies of everything else, maybe she kept a copy of the trust login instructions.”

Wren looked troubled.

“She had an emergency packet.”

“Where?”

“She told me Frank would never find it.”

Dad gave a humorless laugh.

“That describes half this week.”

Wren thought harder.

“Something tied to her wedding anniversary.”

Dad’s expression changed.

“The clock.”

“What clock?”

Dad stood.

“There’s an anniversary clock in the dining room. Brass. Glass dome.”

I remembered it.

Mom wound it every Sunday.

Dad hated the ticking.

Mercer called the team still holding his house.

The clock stood exactly where Dad remembered.

A technician removed the base.

Inside was a folded emergency packet.

Copies of trust documents.

A card with authentication instructions.

And a handwritten password hint.

Dad looked toward Wren.

“Could this still work?”

“No. The original credentials should have expired when Eleanor died.”

“Should have?”

Wren went quiet.

“I renewed administrative continuity during probate.”

Dad’s anger returned.

“You renewed her access?”

“I maintained emergency recovery access to avoid locking the account.”

“Without telling me.”

“Yes.”

Mercer said, “Could someone reconstruct valid credentials from that packet?”

Wren read the photographed instructions.

His face changed.

“Yes.”

So Amanda had found a way to obtain Mom’s hidden packet.

But how?

The house had been searched by Grant.

Vanessa.

Harold.

Shaw.

Possibly others.

Mercer asked whether the clock looked disturbed.

The technician said no.

Then he noticed dust.

The clock base had been opened recently.

Fingerprints were lifted.

One set belonged to Mom.

One to Dad.

One to Vanessa.

And one to Amanda Vale.

Mercer sat down.

Nobody spoke.

Amanda had been inside Dad’s house.

The question was when.

Dad said, “I don’t know her.”

Mercer answered quietly.

“She knew Eleanor.”

I looked at her.

“What?”

Mercer’s eyes remained on the fingerprint report.

“They served together on the county literacy board years ago.”

Dad stared.

“You never said that.”

“I didn’t think it mattered.”

Everything mattered now.

Mercer continued.

Amanda and Mom had once been friendly.

Not close, Mercer insisted.

But they knew each other.

Mom stopped attending the literacy board about a year before her death.

Mercer did not know why.

Wren asked, “Did Eleanor ever mention Amanda?”

Dad shook his head.

Then I remembered something.

A woman at Mom’s funeral.

Short dark hair.

Blue scarf.

She hugged Vanessa.

I had assumed she was from church.

“Was Amanda at Mom’s funeral?”

Mercer nodded.

“Yes.”

Of course.

Another person moving through the house without attracting attention.

Another trusted face.

Mercer requested Amanda’s financial records.

The first results found nothing dramatic.

Normal salary.

Mortgage.

Car payment.

Then the technician traced a company.

Vale Consulting.

Dormant.

No employees.

Over six years, it had received ninety-four thousand dollars from three entities tied to Harold’s nominee network.

Dad looked at Mercer.

“I’m sorry.”

She did not react to the sympathy.

“Keep going.”

That was all she said.

The payments began before Mom hired Turner.

So Amanda’s involvement did not start as a reaction to the investigation.

It was older.

Possibly much older.

Court filing logs showed Amanda had accessed records involving Grant’s company after Lucas Bell’s death.

She also accessed Peter Lawson’s civil estate file.

And Mom’s probate file.

Each time, within days, Mallory took or declined action relevant to the matter.

Mercer said, “She fed him information.”

The technician answered carefully.

“It is consistent with that.”

More records appeared.

Amanda had opened a sealed warrant application related to the quarry four years earlier.

The warrant was withdrawn the next morning.

The investigator who requested it later said someone warned Grant.

Dad whispered, “Amanda.”

Mercer remained silent.

Then came a phone record.

Mom called Amanda three times in the month before her death.

One call lasted twenty-seven minutes.

I looked at Mercer.

“Mom knew.”

“Maybe.”

“Twenty-seven minutes.”

“Yes.”

“Did Amanda tell you?”

“No.”

Mercer’s voice had gone flat.

That frightened me more than anger.

We returned to Mom’s journals.

Her references to R.M. were clear.

E.S. too.

But no A.V.

Not once.

That seemed strange.

If Mom suspected Amanda, why omit her?

Maybe she didn’t suspect her.

Maybe Amanda had pretended to help.

The technician searched handwritten notes from Turner’s files.

One line surfaced.

Eleanor says clerk may be source but insists she is helping.

Mercer closed her eyes.

Dad whispered, “Amanda was feeding your mother information.”

Or pretending to.

Turner confirmed when Mercer called him.

Mom had an inside source at the courthouse.

She never named the source directly.

Turner believed it was a woman.

The source provided docket schedules, sealed-filing alerts, and notice when Mallory requested certain records.

Mom trusted her.

Until the final week.

Then something changed.

“What?” Mercer asked.

Turner searched old notes.

He found it.

Mom learned someone had warned Mallory about her meeting with Wren.

Only three people knew.

Mom.

Wren.

And her courthouse source.

Amanda.

Mercer pressed her fingers against her forehead.

“So Eleanor realized.”

“Yes.”

“Did she confront Amanda?”

“I don’t know.”

Dad looked toward Mom’s final journal entries.

There had been a torn page.

Maybe the missing page was not only about Mallory’s offshore account.

Maybe it named Amanda too.

Grant had said Mallory received that page.

If Amanda was implicated, Mallory had learned Mom knew.

That gave Amanda motive.

Not necessarily to kill Mom.

But to help stop her.

Mercer’s phone rang.

One of the deputies searching the courthouse.

Amanda’s office contained a hidden compartment beneath a filing cabinet.

Inside were old prepaid phones.

Cash.

Copies of sealed orders.

Photographs.

One photo showed Mallory and Amanda together at a lakeside property.

The date was fourteen years earlier.

They were holding hands.

Dad said, “They were having an affair.”

Mercer closed her eyes.

“I didn’t know.”

Another photograph showed them with Harold.

Another with Shaw.

The group was not temporary.

They had known one another for years.

Then the deputies found a notebook.

Amanda’s handwriting.

Names and dates.

Payments.

Court actions.

Warnings.

It was her own ledger.

Not financial alone.

Operational.

When she alerted Grant.

When Shaw intervened.

When Diane needed protection.

When Harold moved records.

When Mallory killed warrants.

Then one entry.

ELEANOR — containment failed.

Dad stared.

“What does that mean?”

The next line answered partly.

R.M. says H.P. will handle family. G.C. unstable. V.C. unreliable.

Grant unstable.

Vanessa unreliable.

Harold handles family.

Mallory gives instructions.

Amanda records the aftermath.

Then a final entry on the day Mom died.

10:51 p.m. — R.M. called. E.C. still conscious. Delay medical response until materials secured.

Mercer stood so quickly the chair struck the wall.

Amanda knew.

While Mom was alive.

She knew.

The betrayal crossed beyond our family now.

Sheriff Mercer’s sister had participated.

Mercer left the room.

No one followed.

She returned five minutes later with red eyes and a steadier voice.

“We continue.”

Dad nodded.

The technician found Amanda’s recent vehicle location from toll cameras.

She was heading south.

Not west toward Mallory.

Not north toward state lines.

South.

Wren looked at the route.

“There’s nothing down there.”

Dad said, “There is.”

We all turned.

“The lake house.”

“What lake house?”

Dad looked sick.

“Harold and I co-owned a cabin years ago. Sold it, I thought.”

Property records showed it had not been sold.

Ownership transferred through a chain of trusts.

Final beneficial owner hidden.

The route matched.

State police moved.

Mercer insisted on accompanying them.

Dad wanted to go.

This time she refused absolutely.

“You stay.”

He did.

That told me how serious he understood it was.

We watched through radio updates.

The lake road was narrow.

Two patrol units approached from opposite directions.

Cabin visible.

Amanda’s car outside.

Another vehicle behind it.

Registered to Shaw.

But Shaw was already in custody.

Someone else had driven it.

Troopers surrounded the property.

No response.

Then a shot.

Everyone in our room froze.

Another.

Mercer’s voice came over radio ordering officers to hold cover.

Smoke appeared from the cabin.

Fire.

Someone had set it.

Troopers moved.

A woman came through the rear door.

Amanda.

Hands raised.

Bleeding from the shoulder.

She collapsed.

Officers dragged her clear.

“Who shot her?” Dad whispered.

Nobody knew.

Then another person appeared through the smoke.

Male.

Older.

Harold.

Dad stood.

“What is he doing there?”

Impossible.

Harold was supposed to be in secure custody.

Mercer demanded confirmation.

The response came back.

Harold Pike.

Alive.

Armed.

He dropped the weapon.

Officers restrained him.

Dad stared at the radio.

“How did he get out?”

Mercer’s answer came through clenched teeth.

“He didn’t.”

The man at the cabin was Harold.

But the man being held in the secure facility was also still there.

Officers checked.

Same name.

Same appearance.

Same age range.

Dad sat slowly.

I felt the shape of another secret before anyone spoke it.

Mercer ordered the man at the cabin identified biometrically.

Fingerprints returned.

Not Harold Pike.

His name was Henry Pike.

Harold’s younger brother.

Dad whispered, “Henry died thirty years ago.”

Apparently he had not.

And whatever our family had believed about Harold’s past was about to become another lie.

Click here to continue reading: PART 13: Harold’s Brother Had Been Legally Dead for Thirty Years, but My Mother Had Discovered Why Someone Needed Him to Stay That Way

Sheriff Mercer stared at the access log as if the screen had betrayed her personally.
