22 – Morrow Accused Keene’s Father of Leaving Samuel to Die, but a Forgotten Dispatch Tape Proved Someone Had Been Impersonating a Police Officer

Keene’s father denied it immediately.

Not through an attorney.

Directly.

“I was not at that crash before emergency services.”

Investigators treated his denial as a claim requiring proof.

Not truth because he had once worn a badge.

That distinction mattered.

Morrow described Thomas arriving in an unmarked police vehicle.

He claimed Thomas ordered everyone away from Samuel.

Said the scene would be handled.

Then Dad and Morrow left.

Diane supposedly left because a detective told her to.

There was a problem.

Diane remembered no police officer.

Neither did Dad.

Dad was questioned again.

For once, his answer aligned with someone I wanted to believe.

“Thomas Keene wasn’t there.”

Could Dad be protecting Thomas?

Possibly.

Could Morrow be lying?

Obviously.

Keene remained removed from that part of the case.

He looked exhausted.

“This is exactly why I can’t touch it.”

“Yes.”

“I hate that you keep being right.”

“You should get used to it.”

He smiled faintly.

Then investigators found Thomas’s duty logs.

He had been working that night.

But twenty miles away.

A burglary call.

Two officers remembered him.

Their old reports placed him there.

The timing made it nearly impossible for him to reach Samuel before the anonymous emergency call.

Morrow’s accusation weakened.

Then a retired dispatcher remembered something.

Not Thomas.

A voice.

The anonymous caller who reported Samuel’s crash had identified himself as a police officer.

That detail never entered the final report.

The dispatcher had noted it on a scratch sheet later discarded.

But emergency calls were recorded.

Archives from that year were incomplete.

One backup tape survived.

Finding the call took two days.

We listened in Lila’s office.

Static.

A man’s voice.

“There’s a vehicle off County Road Nine near the Mercer curve.”

Dispatcher: “Are you at the scene?”

“No.”

“How do you know?”

“I passed it.”

“Can you stop and check for injuries?”

“No. Send an ambulance.”

“Can I get your name?”

Pause.

“Detective Keene.”

My stomach tightened.

The voice was not Thomas.

Keene confirmed that immediately when investigators played it for him.

Too high.

Different cadence.

The caller had used his father’s name.

“Who knew Thomas was investigating Samuel?”

Several people.

Samuel.

Evelyn.

Dad.

Morrow.

Helen.

Mom.

Maybe Diane.

Impersonating Thomas accomplished two things.

It created a delayed emergency call.

And if scrutiny followed, it pointed toward the detective already connected to Samuel.

Morrow insisted he had not made the call.

Dad denied it.

Voice comparison became possible because we had old recordings of both.

The call was short.

Quality poor.

Experts could not make a definitive identification.

But they excluded Thomas.

They could not exclude Dad or Morrow.

Then Thomas remembered another detail.

His police identification wallet had disappeared three weeks before Samuel died.

He reported it missing internally.

A replacement was issued.

The old credentials were never found.

“Could Morrow have stolen them?”

“Yes.”

“Dad?”

“Yes.”

“Mom?”

Thomas had never met Mom at that point.

Probably not.

But Samuel’s boathouse recording contained Dad mentioning “the detective.”

Dad knew Thomas was involved.

Morrow knew too.

The impersonation looked planned.

Morrow’s attempt to blame Thomas began to resemble another exit strategy.

Keene recognized the pattern.

“He’s doing what Richard did.”

“Making everyone else disposable.”

“Yes.”

The surviving dispatch tape contained more than the call.

Twenty minutes later, a second caller contacted police.

A woman.

She refused her name.

“I think there’s been an accident on County Road Nine.”

The dispatcher said units were already en route.

The woman asked whether the driver was alive.

The dispatcher did not know.

Then the caller began crying.

“I should have called sooner.”

The call ended.

Grandma Evelyn.

Her boathouse recording said she tried the cut telephone line, then drove toward town.

Apparently she found another phone and called.

That corroborated her confession.

It also tightened the timeline.

Morrow or Dad placed the first call.

Evelyn placed the second.

Neither call came soon enough.

Prosecutors reconstructed the forty-one minutes after Samuel’s crash.

Crash.

Dad stops.

Morrow arrives.

Diane stops.

Dad descends.

Samuel alive.

Morrow descends.

Samuel no longer speaking.

Diane leaves.

First anonymous call using Thomas’s name.

Grandma’s second call.

Emergency crews arrive.

The unknown remained narrow but crucial.

What happened beside Samuel during the minutes Morrow was below?

Morrow said he rendered aid.

Dad said he stayed on the road.

Diane saw Morrow return with blood.

The autopsy could not answer.

Then Thomas’s private file supplied another overlooked clue.

He had photographed Samuel’s hands at the morgue.

Under Samuel’s fingernails was dark material.

The original lab called it road debris.

Thomas doubted that.

He saved one scraping.

Improper again.

Useful again.

Modern testing identified degraded fibers.

Wool.

Dark blue.

Mixed with microscopic traces of blood that did not belong to Samuel.

DNA quality was poor.

But potentially usable.

Investigators obtained comparison samples.

Dad.

Morrow.

Thomas.

The result excluded Thomas.

Excluded Dad.

Could not exclude Morrow.

Morrow’s old coat was gone.

But photographs from the week after Samuel died showed him wearing a dark blue wool overcoat.

Samuel had scratched someone.

Probably Morrow.

Morrow claimed Samuel grabbed him while he checked for breathing.

Possible.

Then forensic specialists examined the autopsy photographs again.

Samuel had bruising around the lower face.

Subtle.

Originally attributed to the crash.

Modern reviewers disagreed.

The pattern was consistent with external pressure over the mouth and nose.

Not proof of suffocation.

But concerning.

Combined with Diane’s memory—

“He can still talk.”

Then Morrow goes down.

Then returns.

“Now he can’t.”

—the implication became difficult to ignore.

Prosecutors confronted Morrow.

He asked for his attorney.

Negotiations stopped.

Dad, however, started talking.

He said he saw Morrow kneeling over Samuel.

“What was he doing?”

Dad claimed he could not see clearly.

“Did you think he was helping?”

“At first.”

“And then?”

Dad looked away.

“I heard Samuel struggling.”

“Did you go down?”

“No.”

“Why?”

Dad’s answer was barely audible.

“Because I wanted him quiet too.”

There it was.

Not murder confession.

Moral confession.

Dad wanted Samuel unable to expose him.

He let Morrow remain beside him.

Whether Dad knew Morrow would kill him or merely accepted the possibility became a legal question.

For me, it was simpler.

He chose himself.

Again.

Dad also admitted making the first emergency call.

Using Thomas’s name.

“Why?”

“Morrow told me to.”

“Why use Keene’s identity?”

“To confuse the timeline.”

“Did you have his stolen credentials?”

Dad hesitated.

“Yes.”

“Who stole them?”

“Morrow.”

Thomas’s old identification wallet was finally found in Dad’s offshore-account archive box.

Thirty-two years later.

Kept like a trophy.

Or insurance.

Dad had preserved evidence that could blame Morrow if necessary.

Another disposable person.

The prosecutor handling Samuel’s death informed us they were preparing charges against Dad as well.

Not necessarily identical to Morrow’s.

The exact statutes depended on old law and available evidence.

I appreciated the caution.

No dramatic promise.

No certainty.

Just process.

Meanwhile, Northshore Holdings entered mediation.

Their attorneys conceded the lake title was defective.

They had purchased without meeting me and relied on Helen’s fraudulent notarization.

The company wanted to unwind the sale.

Their title insurer would absorb much of the loss.

The receiver proposed returning legal ownership of the lake property to Samuel’s trust for my benefit while litigation over damages continued.

I expected to feel victorious.

Instead, I thought of the photograph Samuel carried.

The lake was where he had confronted Dad.

Where Grandma recorded them.

Where plans around my life became deadly.

I wasn’t sure I wanted it.

Lila understood.

“You don’t have to keep it forever.”

“I know.”

“You can sell it properly.”

“I know.”

“Donate it.”

“Maybe.”

“Burn it to the ground metaphorically.
