idea.”

I thought of the storage boxes.

The safe.

The bank.

Then something Ava said returned.

Six boxes.

But police had found six.

What if there had been seven?

I called Harland.

He reviewed storage-facility video.

Michael had entered the unit three weeks earlier.

He left carrying a narrow metal case.

Not one of the boxes.

The footage showed him placing it in his trunk.

Police searched his home.

No case.

His office.

No case.

Rebecca’s vehicle.

Nothing.

Then Harland checked the SUV Frank drove into my gate.

In the cargo area beneath the spare tire, officers found a narrow metal case.

Inside was the original corporate certificate.

The seal.

And the missing consideration agreement.

Signed by Richard.

Signed by Frank.

Thomas read it twice.

Then a third time.

His face changed.

“What does it say?”

He looked at me.

“Richard did not guarantee Frank’s debt.”

“But the guarantee—”

“Read the consideration clause.”

I did.

Northbridge could claim against the land only under one condition.

If Richard Hale died as a direct result of unlawful conduct committed, ordered, or knowingly concealed by Frank Mercer or any Northbridge officer, all guarantee rights were automatically extinguished.

I stared at the page.

“That makes no sense.”

Thomas’s voice was quiet.

“Yes, it does.”

Richard had signed the guarantee because he suspected Frank was threatening him.

But he built a trap into it.

If Richard died naturally, the agreement might someday help Michael under narrow conditions.

If Richard was harmed—

Frank received nothing.

And by trying to enforce the guarantee now, Frank had created a reason for police to determine exactly how Richard died.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: Richard’s Final Legal Trap Forced Everyone to Choose Between the
