believed him.

But belief had learned to wait for proof.

Harland asked for Daniel’s fingerprints, signature samples, tax returns, and banking history.

He agreed immediately.

The supposed offshore account contained more than four million dollars after investment gains.

If Daniel did not know it existed, someone had created it in his name.

Why?

The answer came from Walter.

“Frank used other people as beneficial owners.”

“To hide money?”

“Yes.”

“Why Daniel?”

Walter looked toward Marisol.

“Because the trust made the name plausible.”

Richard’s attempt to protect Daniel had been used as camouflage for Frank’s theft.

I felt sick.

Then Harland found a signature card for the account.

Daniel Ruiz.

Forged.

Witnessed by a Northbridge officer.

Michael Hale.

I closed my eyes.

Again.

Always Michael.

Daniel stared at the copy.

“I never met him before this month.”

Harland nodded.

“We believe you.”

The statement was unusually direct.

The evidence must have been strong.

Thomas looked at the account history.

“Where did the money originate?”

Harland traced the earliest transfers.

Then stopped.

The first deposit had not come from Northbridge.

It came from an insurance settlement.

Payee:

Estate of Luis Ruiz.

Marisol’s husband.

Daniel’s father.

Marisol turned white.

“There was no settlement.”

Harland looked at her.

“There was.”

“How much?”

“Eight hundred thousand dollars.”

Thirty-two years ago.

Enough to change a widow’s life completely.

“You said you refused.”

“I did.”

Thomas studied the paperwork.

“Someone accepted it on your behalf.”

Marisol whispered, “Who?”

Harland rotated the page.

The signature read Marisol Vega Ruiz.

But beside it was the name of the attorney who certified her acceptance.

Frank Mercer.

Not as lawyer.

As corporate representative.

Frank had stolen the settlement from a dead worker’s widow.

Invested it through hidden accounts.

Then used Daniel’s identity to conceal decades of gains.

Daniel sat beside his mother.

Neither spoke.

The case had begun with my children telling me they had their own lives.

Now we were discovering how many lives Frank Mercer had quietly entered and altered.

Then Walter closed his briefcase.

“There’s another family.”

Harland looked up.

“What family?”

“The second worker on that scaffolding.”

“You said Luis died. What happened to the other man?”

“He survived.”

“Name?”

Walter answered.

“Samuel Brennan.”

Thomas went completely still.

I turned toward him.

“Brennan?”

He did not move.

Walter looked confused.

“Do you know him?”

Thomas’s face had lost all color.

“My father.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 15: Thomas Learned His Own Father Was Part of Frank’s Oldest Fraud, and the Lawyer Protecting Me Had Been Connected From the Beginning

Daniel did not disappear.
