died.

Cash.

At a pharmacy two blocks from my church.

That proved almost nothing.

Then the store’s archived accounting records revealed employee initials beside night?”

Harland looked confused.

“I’m sorry?”

“At rehearsal.”

I answered myself.

“Silent Night.”

I laughed once, then covered my mouth.

Sometimes grief chooses absurd places to become unbearable.

Claire arrived later with business news.

Northbridge’s preliminary forensic audit had identified at least nineteen million dollars in improper transfers over three decades.

Some money could be recovered.

Some probably could not.

The company remained solvent.

More importantly, the neutral monitor found the original shareholder ledger.

Richard’s forty-nine percent had never been lawfully canceled.

Frank’s transfer relied entirely on forged estate documents.

“We have a strong case,” Claire said.

“For ownership?”

“Yes.”

“How strong?”

“Strong enough that Frank’s civil attorneys approached us about settlement.”

“No.”

“You haven’t heard the her.

“How much do you think they took?”

“Likely more.”

“Then no.”

“This could avoid years of litigation.”

“I have years.”

That surprised me.

A few months earlier, age had been the argument used against me.

Too old for the house.

Too old for complexity.

Too old to decide.

Now I discovered seventy-two could still contain years worth fighting with.

Claire smiled faintly.

“All right.”

“Also, I don’t want a settlement that seals records.”

“That will make agreement harder.”

“Then agreement can be hard.”

Richard spent thirty years scattering evidence because Frank relied on secrecy.

I would not rebuild the secrecy for money.

That evening, Paul asked to see me.

We met at the cottage.

He looked
