her.

Her car had been found three streets away with the driver’s door unlocked and the keys beneath the seat.

Daniel remained outside with the fire investigator.

Claire study.

The room where Richard had spent thousands of evenings reading contracts, repairing radios, paying bills, and pretending not to hear me when I asked whether he wanted to go to bed was now a wet black cavity.

One bookshelf had collapsed.

His desk was ruined.

The old brass lamp lay twisted on the floor.

Yet the envelope survived inside a metal ventilation duct.

Richard had hidden evidence behind air.

I almost smiled at that.

He always distrusted obvious hiding places.

By sunrise, investigators had moved us to the station.

The letter contained six handwritten pages and a smaller sealed packet.

Harland gave me a copy of the pages.

The first line made my hands shake.

Maggie, if you are reading this because Jennifer came looking, then I waited too long.

I stopped.

Claire sat beside me without speaking.

I continued.

Richard wrote that Jennifer had become involved in Michael’s financial problems almost three years before his death.

Not merely the altered statements we already knew about.

She had opened accounts.

Temporary accounts, according to Michael.

Bridge accounts.

Money entered for a few days, sometimes hours, then moved again.

Jennifer’s position at the bank allowed her to process transfers quickly.

At first, Richard believed she thought the transactions legitimate.

Later he became less certain.

One transaction changed his mind.

Two hundred thousand dollars arrived from a company called Rainer Development.

It moved through an account Jennifer controlled and then into a Northbridge subsidiary.

Rainer Development did not exist.

Richard discovered the money originated from one of the worker-settlement accounts.

Luis Ruiz’s stolen money.

I looked at Claire.

“So Jennifer handled it.”

“At least according to Richard.”

“She knew?”

Richard had confronted her.

Jennifer cried.

She said Michael told her the money belonged to an old investor whose records needed correcting.

Richard showed her the source.

Then Jennifer admitted she suspected something was wrong.

“Suspected,” I said.

Claire heard the bitterness.

“Richard’s wording?”

“Yes.”

Richard gave Jennifer forty-eight hours to report the transactions to her bank’s compliance department.

She agreed.

She did not do it.

Instead, she told Michael.

Michael told Frank.

Within a day, Richard’s office was broken into.

Nothing obvious was stolen.

But a drawer containing copies of the transfer records had been searched.

That was when Richard began hiding records throughout the house.

Not because he distrusted burglars.

Because he distrusted his own family.

I read that sentence three times.

Richard had spent his final years in a house where he could not leave evidence in his desk because our children might remove it.

I had been there.

Making dinner.

Folding laundry.

Asking whether anyone wanted coffee.

I had noticed none of it.

Richard wrote that Jennifer later returned to him and claimed she had filed the compliance report.

He checked.

She had not.

When he confronted her again, she admitted Frank threatened Michael.

Then she said something Richard underlined.

If you expose him, Dad, you expose all of us.

All of us.

Not Michael.

Not herself.

All.

Richard asked who she meant.

She refused to answer.

That was why he created the hidden packet.

He believed Jennifer knew the identities of people Frank had paid or compromised.

He also believed she had obtained one document Frank desperately wanted destroyed.

“What document?” I asked.

Harland nodded toward the smaller packet.

“We haven’t opened that account.

Destination: Michael’s consulting company.

We already knew about the million.

But beneath the transfer was a handwritten approval.

F.M.

Frank.

And a second authorization.

J.H.

Jennifer Hale.

I stared.

“Jennifer approved Michael’s Michael had been inside our house.

“She knew why he was being paid.”

Harland stayed careful.

“We need evidence of what she understood.”

Richard’s letter provided some.

He wrote that Frank had discussed Richard’s life-insurance policy openly during a Northbridge meeting weeks before his death.

Jennifer attended.

Michael attended.

The policy was expiring for renewal review.

Frank joked that Richard was “worth more to the company dead than retired.”

Richard did not find it funny.

Neither did Walter Chen, who later confirmed hearing a similar remark.

But the most important passage came on page five.

Richard described a conversation with Jennifer on the Tuesday before his death.

She begged him to delay going to police.

He refused.

Then she asked whether he had changed his will.

He had.

I stopped reading.

“His will?”

Claire leaned closer.

“What does it say?”

Richard wrote that Jennifer somehow knew he had amended his estate plan.

He had not told her.

Only three people knew.

Richard.

His estate attorney.

And me.

Except I did not remember any amendment.

“Who was his attorney then?”

Claire asked.

“Charles Benton.”

Harland checked his notes.

“Deceased eight years ago.”

His firm still existed.

Investigators contacted it.

Archived records showed Richard had indeed signed a codicil eleven days before his death.

I had never seen it.

The probate file did not contain it.

“What did it change?”

Harland was waiting for the firm to retrieve the original scanned copy.

Richard’s letter gave a clue.

He wrote that the amendment would prevent any child who knowingly participated in fraud against Margaret Hale Holdings from receiving control of the company after his death.

My heart tightened.

“He expected one of them might.”

Claire nodded.

“He was protecting corporate disappeared.

Nobody went to police.

“Who had access?”

Harland asked.

“Charles Benton’s office.
