immediately.

Yes.

Not because family automatically deserved access.

Because she asked.

That mattered now.

Sunday, Ava came alone.

We baked bread.

She kneaded dough too aggressively.

I let her.

After a while she asked, “Are you still going to live here?”

“In the house?”

“Yes.”

“For now.”

“Mom says maybe they’ll sell theirs.”

“That is between your parents.”

“Are you going to Silver Pines?”

I looked at her.

“No.”

She smiled.

“Good.”

“Why?”

“Because I like this kitchen.”

I did too.

For years, I had imagined staying in the house as proof that I was independent.

Now I understood independence did not require never leaving.

I could sell tomorrow if I wanted.

Stay ten years.

Move somewhere smaller.

Buy a ridiculous apartment near the river.

Choice changed the meaning of every option.

Before Ava left, she touched the blue bowl.

“Mom made this?”

“Yes.”

“It’s ugly.”

I laughed.

“Terrible.”

“Why keep it?”

I looked at the fingerprint in the glaze.

“Because something can be imperfect and still belong to your history.”

Ava thought about that.

Then nodded.

After she left, Harland called.

He had news about Richard’s final hospital minutes.

A respiratory therapist had been located.

Retired.

She remembered the case because Richard briefly regained consciousness.

Nobody had documented his words clearly.

She did.

“What did he say?”

Harland answered.

“He asked whether you were there.”

My throat tightened.

“What did they tell him?”

“That you were outside.”

“What else?”

“He said, ‘Tell Maggie I’m sorry I waited.’”

I closed my eyes.

Sorry I waited.

Not goodbye.

Not instructions.

An apology.

For keeping danger secret.

For believing there would always be Friday.

The therapist said Richard then asked one more question.

“Did Michael call for help?”

The nurse did not know.

She said yes to comfort him.

Richard smiled.

He died believing his son had eventually done the right thing.

That nearly broke me.

For several minutes, I could not speak.

Then something unexpected happened.

Relief.

Michael had not earned Richard’s final belief.

But Richard died with it.

Maybe mercy does not always belong to the person receiving it.

Sometimes it belongs to the one giving it.

I did not need to correct a dead man’s final comfort.

I could let Richard keep that.

The truth belonged to the living now.

Click here to continue reading: PART 23: The Court Restored Richard’s Shares to My Company,
