will.”

The mediation date arrived in early March.

Marcus wore a dark jacket he bought from a thrift store and refused three times when I offered to iron the shirt.

Then he burned the sleeve.

I ironed it.

“You’re enjoying this.”

“Immensely.”

“I hate dress clothes.”

“You look fine.”

“I look like I’m attending my own sentencing.”

Liam entered.

“You look like a substitute teacher.”

Marcus stared at him.

“That is somehow worse.”

The mediation took place downtown.

I drove him.

He did not ask me to come inside.

This time, I knew the distinction mattered.

“I’ll be here afterward.”

“Could take hours.”

“I brought a book.”

“You hate waiting.”

“I contain multitudes.”

He smiled.

Then he went in.

Four hours later, my phone rang.

Marcus.

His voice sounded strange.

“Can you come upstairs?”

“What happened?”

“Nothing bad.”

That did not reassure me.

I entered the building and found him sitting alone on a bench outside a conference room.

His hands were shaking.

I sat beside him.

“What?”

“They made an offer.”

“Okay.”

He named the amount.

I thought I had misheard.

“What?”

He repeated it.

The number was larger than anything either of us had ever discussed.

Enough for medical treatment.

Enough for stable housing.

Enough to erase debts.

Enough to begin again.

I looked at him.

“That’s…”

“I know.”

“What did Rachel say?”

“She thinks they’ll go higher.”

“Then why do you look sick?”

Marcus stared at the floor.

“Because there’s a condition.”

“What?”

He held out a document.

I read the highlighted paragraph.

Confidentiality.

Non-disparagement.

Release of claims.

Broad enough that Marcus would not merely settle his own injury dispute.

He would agree not to cooperate voluntarily in certain future actions relating to internal maintenance practices unless legally compelled.

I looked at him.

“They’re buying your silence.”

“Rachel says that wording can be negotiated.”

“But that’s what they want.”

“Yes.”

The conference-room door opened.

Rachel stepped out.

“They’re ready for a response.”

Marcus stood.

Then stopped.

He looked at me.

For months his goal had been simple.

Get paid what he was owed.

Get treatment.

Get stable.

Now the money was on the table.

More than he had imagined.

And taking it might mean walking away from the very evidence that explained why he had lost everything.

Rachel waited.

Marcus looked down at the settlement papers.

Then folded them once.

“I’m not signing this.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: Marcus Rejected the Offer That
