job?”

“Yes.”

Liam raised both fists.

“Car!”

Marcus looked confused.

“Why does every positive development lead to the car?”

“Because buses are slow.”

“There’s a logic chain.”

“Buy a blue one.”

“I’m not letting a nine-year-old choose my vehicle.”

“Black?”

“No.”

“Red?”

“No.”

“What color?”

“I don’t know.”

Liam looked at me.

“He’s not ready.”

The structural repair took twelve days.

When the stairwell reopened, Dr. Vasquez personally inspected the final work.

Mr. Henderson removed the caution tape.

Mrs. Alvarez applauded.

Someone else joined.

Then half the lobby.

Marcus stood at the edge of the group, embarrassed.

“You didn’t fix it,” I whispered.

“I know.”

“They’re applauding because you made sure somebody did.”

He looked at me.

“That feels weird.”

“Get used to it.”

But the city inspection was not finished.

The anonymous complaint included other areas.

Some legitimate.

Some exaggerated.

A few completely wrong.

Then an inspector found something nobody had reported.

In the basement mechanical room, behind a stack of old drywall, sat a disused electrical panel.

The panel had been disconnected years earlier.

That was not the problem.

The problem was what lay behind it.

Water damage.

Blackened wood.

Evidence of an old fire.

The inspector called Mr. Henderson.

Mr. Henderson called Marcus.

Marcus called Dr. Vasquez.

By sunset, everyone was standing in the basement again.

Dr. Vasquez examined the damaged framing.

“How old is this?”

Mr. Henderson shook his head.

“No idea.”

“Any fire records?”

“Not since I owned it.”

“How long?”

“Eleven years.”

Marcus swept his flashlight across the joists.

One had been reinforced poorly with a short section of lumber.

His expression tightened.

“What?”

I asked.

He pointed.

“That repair isn’t recent.”

Dr. Vasquez agreed.

“Definitely older than eleven years.”

Mr. Henderson looked confused.

“So?”

Marcus moved the light lower.

There, partly hidden behind a pipe, someone had written a date in black marker.

Twenty-three years earlier.

Beneath it were initials.

Marcus stared.

“What?” I asked.

He stepped closer.

“I’ve seen those initials.”

“Where?”

He pulled out his phone.

Opened the maintenance files Mr. Henderson had digitized during the city inspection.

Scrolled.

Stopped.

The same initials appeared on several old repair sheets.

A contractor.

One that had supposedly remediated a major leak in the basement twenty-three years ago.

Marcus looked at Dr. Vasquez.

“If this damage existed then, they covered it.”

She studied the beam.

“Possibly.”

Mr. Henderson groaned.

“Please don’t say possibly.”

Dr. Vasquez ignored him.

Then Marcus found something else.

A brittle paper tag trapped behind the old panel.

He eased it out without tearing it.

Most of the ink had faded.

One phrase remained readable.

DO NOT ENCLOSE UNTIL STRUCTURAL REVIEW.

Nobody spoke.

Mr. Henderson went pale.

Dr. Vasquez took the tag carefully.

Marcus stared at the hidden damage.

For months, he had been fighting a hospital because warnings had been ignored until someone got hurt.

Now, beneath the building he had helped become safe, he was looking at another warning somebody had buried decades earlier.

He turned to Mr. Henderson.

“Get everyone out of the basement.”

“Why?”

Marcus pointed toward the compromised framing.

“Because this time, we don’t wait to find out whether the warning mattered.”
