did not want Marcus turning that failure into the whole truth about his father.

Marcus read that sentence three times.

His father stared at the table.

Then came the part about Anna.

His mother wrote that Anna had a right to be young.

A right to live away from home.

A right not to become a second caregiver simply because Marcus had chosen that role for himself.

Anna started crying.

Marcus stopped.

“I’m sorry.”

The letter said Marcus would be tempted after her death to decide who had failed her.

She asked him not to.

She wrote that love was not proved by exhaustion.

That sacrifice could become a form of control when someone refused to let others choose how they would show up.

Marcus lowered the paper.

His father looked at him.

Neither spoke.

Then came the final paragraph.

It was addressed to Marcus alone.

She told him he had always been the person who fixed broken things.

A bicycle.

A kitchen drawer.

A leaking roof.

People.

She loved that in him.

She also feared it.

Some things, she wrote, were not his to repair.

Some pain had to be witnessed instead of solved.

Some people had to be allowed to fail.

Some relationships had to be offered a door rather than dragged through one.

And when he encountered someone who needed help, she wanted him to help because he chose to, not because he believed their survival made him responsible for the entire world.

Marcus stopped reading.

The porch was silent.

Inside, a cartoon character shouted something ridiculous.

Grace laughed.

The normal sound made the moment harder.

At the bottom of the letter, his mother had written one last line.

Keep your hands open.

Marcus folded the page.

Anna wiped her face.

Their father covered his mouth.

Marcus stared at the words claim with a cardboard sign.

WELCOME BACK MARCUS.

The M had been drawn backward.

Marcus stared at it.

“You had one job.”

“I made it myself.”

“I can tell.”

Liam hugged him.

“You came back.”

“I said I would.”

“Did you fight?”

“Yes.”

“Did you win?”

Marcus glanced at me.

“No.”

Liam frowned.

“Then who did?”

“Nobody.”

“That seems pointless.”

“Sometimes.”

On the drive home, Marcus told us about the toolbox.

The storage unit.

The letter.

Not every detail.

Enough.

When we reached the apartment, he carried the wooden toolbox inside.

He placed it on my kitchen table.

Liam opened the lid.

“Cool.”

Marcus smiled.

“It was my mom’s.”

“Did she fix stuff?”

“Everything.”

“Like you?”

Marcus looked at me.

“Apparently that’s hereditary.”

Inside the toolbox lay the folded letter.

Liam did not touch it.

For once, he understood something was private without being told.

That evening Marcus cooked.

My kitchen filled with the smell of onions and garlic.

The ordinary rhythm returned.

But Marcus was different.

Not transformed.

Quieter.

More deliberate.

When I complained about a loose drawer, he asked, “Do you want me to fix it?”

I stared.

“Who are you?”

“Growth.”

“Disturbing.”

He laughed.

Three days later, Dr. Vasquez called with a new contract opportunity.

A larger property management company wanted help rebuilding its maintenance documentation after failing an insurance inspection.

Temporary.

Possibly expanding.

Marcus listened.

Then asked questions.

Hours.

Travel.

Authority.

Reporting structure.

He did not say yes immediately.

That surprised her.

And me.

“You used to accept everything,” I said afterward.

“I know.”

“What changed?”

Marcus looked at the wooden toolbox on my shelf.

“I’m trying to stop believing every broken thing is mine.”

“Are you going to take it?”

“Maybe.”

“That sounds healthy.”

“I dislike it.”

The choice became more complicated the next morning.

Mr. Henderson called him downstairs.

A pipe had burst behind a first-floor wall.

Not catastrophic.

Messy.

Marcus assessed it.

Called a plumber.

Documented the damage.

Then stepped back.

Mr. Henderson watched him.

“You’re not going to open the wall?”

“Plumber’s coming.”

“You can do it faster.”

“Probably.”

“So?”

Marcus looked at him.

“So I’m not doing every job just because I can.”

Mr. Henderson stared.

“Who are you?”

Marcus laughed.

Apparently everyone noticed.

That evening, after the leak was repaired, Marcus accepted Dr. Vasquez’s contract.

Twelve additional hours a week.

Mostly planning.

Risk reviews.

Maintenance systems.

Work his body could sustain.

He came upstairs to tell me.

“Good.”

“That’s it?”

“What do you want, balloons?”

“Liam would provide balloons.”

“He would.”

Marcus sat across from me.

“The job could become permanent.”

“Do you want that?”

“Yes.”

No hesitation.

Then his phone buzzed.

Anna.

A photograph.

His father in physical therapy, standing between parallel bars.

The caption read:

He walked twelve steps.

Marcus stared at the image.

Then smiled.

His father was rebuilding too.

Different injury.

Different failures.

Different pace.

Marcus typed:

Tell him I said thirteen tomorrow.

Anna replied:

He says stop bossing him.

Marcus laughed.

I looked over.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

But he looked happy.

Not the fragile happiness that depends on everything finally becoming perfect.

Something sturdier.

A happiness with room for unfinished things.

Later, while washing dishes, I found his mother’s letter on the table.

Still folded.

Marcus came behind me.

“You forgot this.”

He picked it up.

“No.”

“What?”

“I left it.”

“Why?”

He slid it back into the toolbox.

“I think it belongs where I can find it.”

Not hidden.

Not carried constantly.

Available.

That seemed right.

Then Liam shouted from his room.

“Marcus!”

“What?”

“My lamp is broken!”

Marcus took one step toward the hallway.

Stopped.

Looked at me.

I raised an eyebrow.

He shouted back, “Do you want help?”

Liam yelled, “Yes!”

Marcus smiled.

Then went.

Click here to continue reading: PART 14: Marcus’s New Work Asked Him to Prevent the Kinds of
