they’ll change the finding.”

“No.”

“But someone’s reading it.”

“Yes.”

Her voice broke slightly.

“For years nobody would.”

Marcus understood.

Sometimes being heard was not the outcome.

It was the first condition required for one.

Robert Dalton’s interview led the city to recommend targeted reviews at several buildings with documented Brenner structural work.

Not every building.

Evidence-based scope.

Marcus approved of that.

Then our building’s permanent basement repair received final inspection.

Mr. Henderson organized a ridiculous lobby gathering.

Cake again.

This time spelled correctly.

Mrs. Alvarez complained.

“Less character.”

The inspector signed the final approval.

Marcus photographed it.

Uploaded it.

Backed it up.

Printed a copy.

Placed another in the basement maintenance binder.

Mr. Henderson watched.

“Overkill?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

They walked downstairs together.

The old damaged joists remained partially visible behind an access panel intentionally installed for future inspection.

The warning tag had been preserved under clear protective material.

DO NOT ENCLOSE UNTIL STRUCTURAL REVIEW.

Marcus stood in front of it.

Mr. Henderson asked, “You want that covered?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“So the next person knows.”

The past did not need to remain hidden to stop controlling the future.

Sometimes it needed a window.

That evening, Marcus came upstairs.

Liam was doing homework.

I was cooking.

Ordinary.

He leaned against the counter.

“Final inspection passed.”

“Congratulations.”

“Thank you.”

“No celebration?”

“I’ve had enough cake.”

Liam looked up.

“Impossible.”

Marcus smiled.

Then his phone rang.

His father.

He answered.

“Hey.”

No response.

Marcus straightened.

“Dad?”

I turned off the stove.

Anna’s voice came through the phone.

Not his father.

“Marcus.”

He went pale.

“What happened?”

“He collapsed.”

Marcus gripped the counter.

“When?”

“Twenty minutes ago.”

“Is he conscious?”

“No.”

“Ambulance?”

“They’re here.”

“Stroke?”

“They don’t know.”

Marcus closed his eyes.

Anna was crying.

“I’m scared.”

For one second, I saw every old instinct return.

Command.

Solve.

Take over.

He swallowed them.

“What do you need?”

Anna’s breathing shook.

“Come.”

Marcus looked at me.

I was already reaching for my keys.
