coming.”

“Good.”

“I already called the kids’ school.”

“Good.”

“I brought Dad’s medication list.”

Marcus stopped.

“That’s really good.”

Anna laughed through tears.

“You sound surprised.”

“A little.”

“Jerk.”

He smiled.

For a second, they sounded like siblings who had spent years teasing each other instead of years not speaking.

Then a monitor beeped somewhere near Anna.

She said, “I need to go.”

“I’ll be there by noon.”

“Okay.”

Marcus ended the call.

I pajamas.

“Is Grandpa okay?”

Marcus blinked.

Grandpa.

The word landed strangely because Liam had never met the man.

“He’s in the here.”

That surprised me.

“For what?”

He looked toward Liam.

“Normal.”

The word made sense.

Someone needed to keep breakfast happening.

School.

Work.

The apartment.

Ordinary life waiting for him to return.

I nodded.

“Okay.”

Marcus stood.

His knee was stiff from sitting, but he barely limped anymore.

Then he stopped beside Liam.

“I’m coming back.”

Liam looked up.

“I didn’t ask.”

“You were going to.”

“Maybe.”

Marcus held out a fist.

Liam bumped it.

“Bring something from the airport.”

“That’s extortion.”

“Yes.”

At the airport, Marcus called Anna again.

No answer.

He texted.

Boarding.

Then waited.

Nothing.

He boarded anyway.

That was harder than he expected.

The old Marcus would have remained at the gate calling every five minutes until someone answered.

The newer one sat down, buckled his seat belt, and let the plane move without him controlling what happened hundreds of miles away.

He hated every second.

When he landed, Anna had sent three messages.

Dad stable.

MRI confirms stroke.

Doctor says come when you get here, not emergency rush.

Marcus read the last line twice.

Not emergency rush.

The airport corridor blurred slightly as he walked.

He rented a car.

Then sat inside without starting it.

His hands shook.

The first stroke had happened while Marcus and his father were estranged.

He had not been there.

He had not even known until weeks later.

This time, he knew.

This time, Anna had called.

This time, he was coming.

Difference mattered.

He started the car.

The hospital was twenty-seven minutes away.

Marcus arrived in twenty-eight.

Growth.

Anna met him near the elevators.

She looked exhausted.

He hugged her before saying anything.

She held on.

“He’s awake.”

“Talking?”

“Some.”

“Does he know you?”

“Yes.”

“Kids?”

“Home with David.”

“Good.”

She pulled back.

“Marcus.”

“What?”

“Don’t react when you see him.”

His stomach tightened.

“Why?”

“His face.”

“Oh.”

“Left side drooping.”

“I know what strokes look like.”

“I know.”

“You think I’ll scare him?”

“I think you’ll scare yourself.”

That was accurate.

The room was dim.

His father lay slightly elevated, oxygen tubing beneath his nose.

One side of his mouth sagged.

His left arm rested motionless atop the blanket.

He looked smaller than he had three months earlier.

Marcus stopped at the doorway.

His father saw him.

For one awful second, there was no recognition.

Then the older man’s right hand lifted.

Barely.

“Late.”

The word came thick and distorted.

Marcus laughed.

The sound broke immediately.

“Flight delay.”

There had been no delay.

His father knew.

Maybe.

Marcus came closer.

He did not grab his father’s hand.

He waited.

His father moved it toward him.

Then Marcus held it.

“Doctor says you’re showing off.”

His father tried to smile.

Only half his face moved.

“Again.”

“Apparently once wasn’t enough.”

Anna stood behind Marcus.

Their father looked between them.

“Togeth…er.”

The word took effort.

Anna touched his shoulder.

“Yeah.”

Marcus lowered his head.

Years of anger had once convinced him he would feel nothing if his father died.

That belief now seemed absurd.

The neurologist arrived twenty minutes later.

The stroke had affected the right side of his father’s brain.

Motor function on the left was significantly impaired.

Speech issues were present but comparatively mild.

No immediate surgery indicated.

Rehabilitation would be intensive.

Outcome uncertain.

Marcus listened.

Then asked questions.

Not fifty.

Five.

What did they know?

What did they not know?

What decisions were needed today?

What could wait?

The neurologist answered.

Anna watched her brother.

Afterward, she said, “Who are you?”

“What?”

“You only asked five questions.”

“I’m evolving.”

“Disturbing.”

Their father made a noise from the bed.

Possibly a laugh.

Possibly a cough.

They chose laugh.

That afternoon, Marcus sat with him while Anna went home to shower.

The room was quiet.

His father slept intermittently.

Marcus stared at the man’s left hand.

Still.

He remembered the jar.

I can do it.

Then, later:

Now.

Help requested.

Help given.

He wondered how much of that independence his father would regain.

Then hated himself for measuring recovery only hours after the stroke.

A nurse entered to reposition him.

Marcus stood.

“I can help.”

She smiled politely.

“We’re okay.”

He nearly insisted.

Stopped.

Sat.

The nurse adjusted pillows.

Checked skin.

Moved the weakened arm carefully.

Marcus watched.

Doing nothing felt like failing.

He knew better now.

His father opened his eyes.

“You.”

“What?”

“Sit.”

“I am sitting.”

His father frowned.

“Think…ing loud.”

Marcus laughed.

“I get that from you.”

The older man shook his head.

“Mother.”

That was true.

Elaine had thought loudly too.

Apparently the family inherited invisible noise.

His father slept again.

Marcus texted me.

Stable. Rehab likely. I’m okay.

I replied:

Actual okay or Marcus okay?

He stared at the screen.

Then typed:

Actual okay enough.

Enough.

That evening Anna returned with clean clothes.

She sat beside him in the hospital cafeteria.

“You’re staying where?”

“Hotel.”

“No.”

“Anna.”

“Guest room.”

“I don’t want—”

“Stop.”

He looked at her.

“You are not making yourself difficult to accommodate so nobody feels inconvenienced.”

Marcus blinked.

“That sounded like Mom.”

“Good.”

He surrendered.

At Anna’s house, Noah and Grace ran toward him.

Noah stopped halfway.

“How’s Grandpa?”

Marcus knelt.

“He had another stroke.”

“Is he dying?”

“No.”

“You sure?”

“No.”

Anna’s face tightened.

Marcus continued.

“But the doctors think he has a lot of work ahead, and he’s awake.”

Noah considered this.

“Can I see him?”

“Probably soon.”

Grace climbed directly onto Marcus.

“What’s a stroke?”

He explained simply.

Part of the brain stopped getting enough blood for a while.

It could make parts of the body stop working correctly.

“Can doctors fix it?”

“They help.”

“Like tools?”

“Sort of.”

“Do you fix brains?”

“No.”

“Good.”

Marcus laughed.

That night he could not sleep.

He found Anna in the kitchen at one thirty.

She was making tea.

“You too?”

“Yes.”

He sat.

For a while neither spoke.

Then Anna said, “I thought he died when the hospital called.”

Marcus looked at her.

“Me too when you called.”

“I didn’t know if I should call you first.”

“What?”

“I almost called David and waited.”

“Why?”

“Because you just came back into this.”

He stared.

“Anna.”

“I know.”

“You call me.”

“Now I know.”

“No. Every time.”

She nodded.

Then said, “You don’t have to stay until he’s discharged.”

Marcus bristled automatically.

“I know.”

“Do you?”

“Yes.”

“You have a job.”

“They’ll understand.”

“Chloe.”

He looked up.

“Liam.”

“I know.”

“A life.”

“I know.”

Anna stirred her tea.

“You don’t have to prove exhaustion.

“I’m staying a few days.”

“That makes sense.”

“Then I’ll go home.”

“Good.”

“And come back if needed.”

“Good.”

He narrowed his eyes.

“Stop managing me.”

“You started it twenty years ago.”

They smiled.

The next morning, their father began early therapy assessment.

A physical therapist asked him to lift the left leg.

Nothing happened.

Again.

A twitch.

His father became angry.

Marcus recognized the look.

His own face after his knee failed under him.

“Again,” his father demanded.

The therapist said, “Rest.”

“Again.”

Marcus stood near the window.

Every instinct told him to encourage.

Push.

One more.

His mother had said something about making fear look like love.

He stayed quiet.

The therapist ended the assessment.

Afterward, his father looked at Marcus.

“Say.”

“What?”

“Something.”

Marcus shrugged.

“You were terrible.”

His father stared.

Then laughed weakly.

“Jerk.”

“Hereditary.”

The tension eased.

Therapy began.

Tiny tasks.

Sitting upright.

Transferring weight.

Moving fingers.

Swallowing safely.

Speech.

Marcus had expected dramatic milestones.

Instead recovery arrived in millimeters.

A finger moved.

A word became clearer.

A seated balance test lasted five seconds longer.

The maintenance worker in Marcus kept searching for a broken component.

There wasn’t one.

The human body refused to become a repair ticket.

On the third day, his father asked for coffee.

The speech therapist said not yet.

Marcus watched disappointment cross his face.

“Want me to sneak you some?”

His father’s eyes brightened.

Then Marcus said, “No.”

His father scowled.

“You’re cruel.”

“Safety coordinator.”

“Worst…job.”

“Agreed.”

That afternoon the rehabilitation lists.

Insurance.

Transportation.

Clothes.

Home accessibility.

Marcus saw her moving toward overload.

“What do you need?”

She
