up.

“You did this?”

“Mostly.”

Theo smiled.

“Legal aid helped.”

“Job?”

“Still there.”

“Knee?”

“Still garbage.”

“Fair.”

Theo’s expression softened.

“You gave me that nodded.

“Yeah.”

“Actual?”

“Yes.”

Then he looked toward Liam’s room.

“One year.”

“Feels longer.”

“Much.”

“Do you ever think about what would’ve happened if we kept walking?”

He asked it quietly.

“No.”

He looked surprised.

“Never?”

“I used to.”

“And?”

“I stopped.”

“Why?”

“Because we else?”

“Sure.”

“What are we doing?”

I knew immediately what he meant.

Not shelter work.

Not dinner.

Us.

For once, Marcus looked more frightened than he had at any engineering review.

I did not rescue him.

“What do you think?”

He laughed nervously.

“I hate when you do that.”

“Answer.”

He took a breath.

“I think I stopped feeling like a guest a long time ago.”

“You hand.

“I love you too.”

Marcus breathed out.

Then laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because he had been holding air for a year.

Nothing exploded.

No music played.

The faucet did not leak.

The door stayed shut properly.

From Liam’s room came a muffled shout.

“I KNEW
