argument.

The next morning, Mark testified for nearly six hours.

I watched from another room with Sarah.

He admitted the affair.

Admitted lying to Sarah.

Admitted lying to me.

Admitted arranging initial surveillance.

Admitted sharing information with Blackwell because he feared his promotion review.

Admitted commissioning the first confidentiality proposal.

Admitted receiving information he should have questioned.

Admitted failing to report the surveillance after it escalated beyond his instructions.

When counsel asked whether he considered Matthew’s Down syndrome a professional embarrassment, Mark paused.

Then said yes.

Sarah looked down.

I did too.

It hurt even though I already knew.

Maybe truth hurts differently when spoken publicly.

Mark continued.

“I was ashamed of what people might think people I hurt stopped protecting me from the consequences.”

Sarah looked at me.

Neither of us spoke.

Gregory testified two days later under an agreement that required complete cooperation.

He confirmed Richard’s Oracle role.

Confirmed Margaret’s root authority.

Confirmed his own destruction orders.

Confirmed that he had forced Jonathan into disappearance six years earlier to protect Natalie and Blackwell.

He admitted calling emergency services at the terminal after Marissa attacked Jonathan.

He also admitted approving intensified surveillance of me after the prenatal diagnosis.

“Why?” an investigator asked.

Gregory answered:

“Because I believed a public disability-related discrimination allegation would expose older medical-access cases.”

There it was.

Not concern for Matthew.

Concern about what his existence could reveal.

Natalie resigned from HelixBridge and turned over the migration architecture.

Her notes allowed investigators to identify hundreds of unauthorized queries.

Not every query represented discrimination.

Not every person suffered direct harm.

That distinction remained important.

But the access itself was enough to trigger investigations far beyond my case.

Insurance regulators.

Privacy authorities.

Employment agencies.

Civil litigation.

Board inquiries.

Blackwell could no longer describe the issue as one executive’s affair.

The story was larger.

But my life became smaller again.

I wanted that.

One evening Sarah came over with Ava.

Ava carried a stuffed giraffe.

“For Matthew.”

“You don’t have to give him your toys.”

“It’s not mine.”

She distinction.”

Ava placed the giraffe beside Matthew.

Then she asked whether babies with Down syndrome liked giraffes.

I said, “This one hasn’t formed a strong opinion yet.”

She considered that.

“Okay.”

Sarah laughed.

It was the first time I heard her laugh without exhaustion.

Later, while Ava sat on the floor talking to Matthew, Sarah and I stood in the kitchen.

“People keep asking whether we’re friends,” she said.

“What do you tell are.”

“Neither do I.”

“I still get angry when I look at you sometimes.”

“You should.”

“I don’t want permission.”

“Right.”

She looked at me.

Then, unexpectedly, smiled.

“That was almost an argument.”

“We’re improving.”

Her smile disappeared slowly.

“I don’t forgive what happened.”

“I know.”

“But I don’t want Matthew growing up feeling like his existence is something that happened to my family.”

My throat tightened.

“He didn’t do anything.”

“Exactly.”

She looked at Ava beside him.

“They’re siblings.”

“Yes.”

“I want to find a way to make that true without pretending everything around it was okay.”

I nodded.

“So do I.”

That was the beginning.

Not of friendship.

Not yet.

Of an agreement built around two children who had never asked adults to make their lives complicated.

The following week, the court accepted Mark’s paternity acknowledgment.

Matthew Parker’s legal record now named his father.

No confidentiality.

No hidden contingency.

No corporate condition.

Mark received a preliminary support order.

He paid it.

Then he asked through attorneys for supervised visits.

I expected anger.

Instead I felt tired.

David asked what I wanted.

I looked at Matthew.

“I want him protected.”

“From Mark?”

“From everyone deciding who Mark is going to be before Mark proves it.”

David nodded.

“That’s reasonable.”

One-hour supervised visits were arranged.

The first took place at a family center.

Mark arrived twenty minutes early.

He brought nothing except a diaper bag Sarah had told him to buy himself.

When the supervisor handed Matthew to him, Mark looked terrified.

“Support his head,” I said.

“I am.”

“You’re holding him like an unexploded device.”

“I feel like he is one.”

Despite myself, I laughed.

Mark looked at me.

Then laughed too.

Matthew immediately spit milk on his shirt.

I laughed harder.

It was not forgiveness.

That mattered.

A funny moment did not erase harm.

But neither did harm require every future moment to remain miserable.

Mark wiped his shirt.

“Hi, buddy.”

Matthew stared at him.

No revelation.

No magical recognition.

Just a baby looking at a nervous man.

Mark’s eyes filled.

He did not make a speech.

Good.

At the end of the hour, he handed Matthew back.

“Thank you.”

I nodded.

As we left, I saw Mark remain alone in the visitation room for several minutes.

He had chosen to testify without knowing whether I would ever allow that hour.

That was why the hour had been possible.

Not because he deserved it automatically.

Because he had finally begun doing necessary things without demanding a reward.

Click here to continue reading: PART 27: Sarah Received the Answer She
