knew.

I saw it.

“What?”

“She wanted me to stop talking about you.”

I frowned.

“When?”

“To her.”

“That’s all?”

“No.”

Mom swallowed.

“She wanted us to stop helping you.”

I almost laughed.

“You weren’t helping me.”

“I know.”

“She meant emotionally?”

“She believed any interest we showed in your life came at her expense.”

“Did you agree?”

“No.”

“Did you comply?”

Mom closed her eyes.

“Sometimes.”

Birthday calls shortened.

Visits postponed.

Conversations changed.

News about Holt Ridge avoided because it upset Brooke.

My achievements became subjects my parents learned to mention carefully or not at all.

Not because they were indifferent.

Because Brooke experienced my visibility as injury.

“You made me smaller for her.”

Mom cried.

“Yes.”

The answer hollowed me out.

I had suspected favoritism.

The truth was stranger.

My parents had not necessarily admired me less.

They had hidden their interest in me to keep Brooke calm.

The result from my side looked identical.

Absence.

“What did Dad know?”

“Most of it.”

“Did he agree?”

“He hated conflict.”

“That is not an answer.”

“He let me handle it.”

Which was an answer.

Passivity was a choice too.

I stood.

“I need you to go.”

Mom nodded.

At the door, she turned.

“I loved hearing about Holt Ridge.”

The words made me angry.

“Then why didn’t you ask?”

Her face tightened.

“Because Brooke would ask why I cared.”

I stared at her.

That might have been the saddest sentence of all.

“You’re her mother.”

“I know.”

“You were allowed to care about both of us.”

“I know.”

“You acted like love was a fixed amount because she insisted it was.”

“Yes.”

I opened the door.

Dad stood beside the car.

Mom walked toward him slowly.

Before she reached him, she stopped and looked back.

“I’m going to tell her I won’t do that anymore.”

I almost said good.

I stopped.

That was her work.

Not mine.

I closed the door.

Rachel remained at the table.

“You okay?”

“No.”

“Useful answer.”

I smiled faintly.

Then Mercer called.

The flash drive contained something else.

A spreadsheet created by Brooke.

Dates.

Events.

Money.

Moments she believed I had been chosen over her.

Scholarship.

Grandma’s lake house.

Trust amounts.

My first property.

Holt Ridge awards.

My house.

Beside each was a number.

At first investigators thought they were monetary values.

They were not.

They were scores.

Brooke had assigned values to perceived favoritism.

Scholarship: 20.

Lake house: 30.

Grandma’s trust: 40.

Business recognition: 10.

House: 50.

At the bottom:

TOTAL OWED: 150.

I stared at the page.

One hundred fifty.

The same amount Thomas first loaned Brooke.

Not coincidence.

Brooke had converted emotional grievance into a financial debt.

One hundred fifty thousand dollars.

Exactly what she believed I owed her before any fraudulent borrowing began.

The theft had not been random.

The number had been chosen years earlier.

Click here to continue reading: PART 16: Brooke Had Put a Price on Every Time She Felt
