did sound like a banker who thought paperwork made theft respectable.”

For the first time, Martin’s voice sharpened.

“You have no idea what your husband did.”

“Then enlighten me.”

“Walter didn’t merely investigate the accounts.”

“What did he do?”

“He moved money.”

I looked at Grady.

“Whose?”

“Mine.”

“How much?”

“One hundred eighty thousand dollars.”

“That sounds unlikely.”

“He took it from an account he believed contained stolen funds.”

“Did it?”

“Some.”

“Where did Walter send it?”

Martin became quiet.

Then he said:

“To Caroline.”

She stared at the phone.

“No,” she whispered.

Martin heard her.

“So she’s there.”

Caroline backed away from the table.

“You’re lying.”

“Am I?”

“Yes.”

“Then ask Karen to look at the final file on Walter’s flash drive.”

I turned toward Ramirez.

The flash drive was still with evidence technicians.

“What file?”

Martin answered.

“It’s password protected.”

“What password?”

“You already know it.”

“What is it?”

“Walter’s favorite rule.”

I knew exactly what he meant.

My husband had said the same thing whenever Grady wanted to borrow money, whenever I questioned a contractor’s estimate, whenever a salesman promised something too good to be true.

Follow the numbers.

Martin ended the call.

Ten minutes later, technicians opened the encrypted folder using the phrase.

Inside was a spreadsheet.

Transfers.

Dates.

Accounts.

Walter had moved money.

A great deal of it.

But the destination was not Caroline’s account.

It was an account identified only by four letters.

KMWT.

My initials.

Karen Marie Whitlow.

And the last letter—

Trust.

Walter had created another trust.

One I had never known existed.

The final balance displayed on the sheet was $183,742.

Grady looked at me.

Kelsey stared.

Caroline whispered, “Martin has been looking for that money for six years.”

I could barely speak.

“Where is it?”

Caroline shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

Then Officer Ramirez’s phone rang.

He answered, listened, and looked directly at me.

“What?”

He ended the call.

“Mrs. Whitlow, somebody just attempted to access a trust account at First Union using your identification.”

My stomach dropped.

“Who?”

“They stopped the transaction.”

“Who tried?”

Ramirez’s expression hardened.

“A woman presenting herself as Karen Whitlow.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 13: The Woman Using My Name Was Already
